    $50k fine for Belichick.

Bill Belichick's decision to grab an official as he left the field on Sunday night is going to cost him $50,000.

The NFL announced on Wednesday afternoon that Belichick has been fined $50,000 for his actions, which came just after the Ravens had beaten the Patriots 31-30 in a game that had players, coaches and fans of both teams ripping the NFL’s replacement referees.

Belichick’s fine is the hardest any coach has been hit yet for actions toward the officials this season. Broncos coach John Fox was previously fined $30,000, Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was fined $25,000 and Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was fined $25,000.

Immediately following the game on Sunday, an obviously angry Belichick said he didn’t see any reason he should be fined. A day later, Belichick softened his tone toward the officials, saying he meant no disrespect and just wanted to ask whether the Ravens’ game-winning field goal would be reviewed on instant replay. The NFL’s fine is a statement that no matter the reason, a coach putting his hands on the officials won’t be tolerated.

Maybe some of you think the gif above is of Mays hitting Schaub. It's the play BEFORE that, which was also flagged.

This is the play that got him suspended (I can't understand who wouldn't get the huge problem with this play)...

No I saw it live. And over and over and over again. Im not saying the hit was nothing. Im saying why was he suspended for it happening once? That is me assuming he has not built a reputation for this sort of hit.

I'm just saying, he got suspended for helmet to helmet contact, why has nobody else been suspended for that this season? My only conclusion is that the hit was too hard, which is not specified in the NFL rule book. Thus he shouldn't be suspended. Seems like Goodell makes up rules on the fly.

Don't know what to tell you. The guy lowered his helmet, launched at the head of a QB with the intention of forcing him down without using his arms at all. I don't see any reason a reputation needs to be built before taking a hard stance against that. He hit the QB in the head so hard that he lost a piece of his ear when his strapped on helmet went flying off. I can't think of any worse violation of this rule than what happened here.

That's YOUR only conclusion so Goodell is making up rules on the fly? Every situation is evaluated independently. There have been 3 weeks and you wonder why no one else has been suspended yet? I think the easy answer is bc no one else has so blatantly gone against the rules as this.

Look at it this way... you keep saying "he hit him too hard" but he didn't hit him at all... didn't even try to. All he wanted to do was launch at his head with the top of his helmet. If the gif doesn't show that I don't know what else to tell you. There really isn't any reason to compare this to hits on defenseless WRs as defenders are trying to dislodge a ball or both players are running full speed and defenders just take bad angles that end up hitting the offensive player in the helmet. Mays had a million different options and he chose the one that's illegal in every way.

Joe Mays definitely desearved a penalty and maybe a fine for this big hit on Schaub, but not a suspension. If you look at the play a little closer you will see that he is not leading with his helmet but, instead, his right shoulder pad. It is more noticible from the replay that is directly behind Mays. At the reverse angle opposite this angle above, it actually shows that Mays' helmet doesn't actually contact Schaub's helmet (at least that is what I saw in the reverse angle replay). It's the clear hit and recoil that knocks his helmet off. Yes, it is an unnecessary big hit... but it is still football. Big hits that cause other players' helmets to come off shouldn't automatically draw a flag. I am worried that this is what the NFL is becoming.

Why do you have to be a repeat offender to be suspended? Dude is clearly ignorant of the rules and needs to take a week off to learn them.

lol, if you say so. Seems clear as day to me (and I watched the game live, have seen every angle, etc). Not sure what should warrant a suspension if not this hit. And it's FAR more than the helmet coming off that's the problem here.

He definitely led with the crown of his helmet. It is pretty indisputable.

Players who don't realize that the NFL has been cracking down HARD on this stuff and put themselves in this kind of situation might not be smart enough to even play in the league.

I've come to the realization that people don't know what they want when it comes to things such as hits and how to handle them as far as discipline goes.

This isn't the first time he's been targeted either, back in his NOLA days it was either the Jets or Ravens where apparently they were trying to hurt him after plays were over(can't find the article on it)

Because it is extremely clear that he is trying to take Schaubs head off.

Haha, he is supposed to tackle him/ wrap him up- Mays clearly makes no attempt to use his arms in any way to tackle Schaub nor does he make any attempt to go low on him. This wasn't a bang bang play.
