Re: NFL Off Topic
I still think it's funny that people were lining up to turn in Ray Rice jerseys but everyone loves Suggs... who dragged his girlfriend/wife by the hair and threw bleach on her. But since that happened before these things were displayed in the public for casual fans to see, it's all good.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
It's actually a pretty big deal. Hardy announcing his appeal is the first sign of that. Judges overruling the powers granted in the CBA will likely open the flood gates for players wanting to run to court if they don't like Goodell's ruling.
Also consider the judge specifically speaks on the player not knowing the potential punishment. Now the common punishment for domestic violence in the NFL was about 2 games when Ray hit his wife. That's what the commissioner gave him and all hell broke loose, but imagine now the commissioner correcting a flaw in previous punishment by increasing on the fly. Rice goes to court and the judge says it's an unfair penalty bc the player didn't previously know the potential punishment?
This is far from over unfortunately, but the results are more significant than I think many know.
Unfortunately with this judge's ruling the floodgates are now open for every single player who's been disciplined and feels they've been wronged to go and take it to the legal system. This judge has singlehandedly crippled Goodell's ability to rule harshly when it's warranted.
That being said, if Goodell wasn't so damn wishy washy in his rulings this wouldn't have happened in the first place.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: NFL Off Topic
It's more a fault of today's access to information. As I mentioned, the 2 games Goodell originally gave Ray Rice was the norm... may even be considered high in some cases. Nobody batted an eye or even knew if they didn't go out of their way to research NFL player penalties for domestic violence. When the casual fan begins getting details to the discipline policies they're going to say "What's going on here?" no matter who the commissioner is/was.

Judge basically said you can't just do whatever the hell you want with impunity in regards to how you punish your employees, even though the CBA says Goodell can do exactly that. I'm not surprised Goodell is appealing the ruling, because he looks like an absolute fool right now (and rightfully so). If Goodell loses on this front, he's pretty much forcing his own resignation.jWILLComment

Re: NFL Off Topic
Remember when Goodell was first hired and everyone said he was heavy handed with his suspensions? Then we have things that extend beyond the players, owners and die hard fans like bountygate, the pats videotape scandal and ray rice and in each case, the public demanded harsher penalties than "the Hammer" would have normally done.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
The biggest thing about this case, is the fact that the judge just negated a huge part of the CBA that the NFL negotiated for and the NFLPA conceded so they could have a bigger slice of the revenue pie.

Re: NFL Off Topic
Well the owners were happy enough with Goddell to give him a very generous compensation, about $30 million a year.
However, if his reputation keeps getting assailed, they may decide he's not worth it even though he's basically doing their dirty work, getting all the public heat for whatever grievances they have against the league.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
The NFL losing the appeal would change arbitration laws around the country and be detrimental to every single sports league. Goodell could gave f'ed up so hard here that he could screw the NBA, MLB, NHL and others.Comment
