An article I found from a couple years ago said it ranges from $25,000 to $75,000 a year. Could be more now. Obviously, you're entering at the lower end, so you're going to have to hold another full time job.

By far the lowest paid officials of any major sport on a yearly basis. While they do work fewer games, the league they work for basically prints money. I don't even really fully blame these guys for some of the stuff you see them screw up. In the past few years, they've added so many new interpretations and change points of emphasis every year. With a full time training program, they'd have a lot more time to have video and situational training. The league is cheaping out on the refs, and it's hurting their product.

Current NFL officials make about $175K

By 2019 it will be $205K based on the deal signed in 2012.

All of them? Or just the head referees with years of experience?

All of them. Head Ref may make a little more, but I can't be sure. Its actually probably higher than 175K given they were making 173K in 2013 as a part of their new deal.

Alright, found a much more recent article. A rookie starting in 2014 made $78,000. Better than it used to be. It takes 10 years to get to the levels you're talking about.

Football season is in full swing and every weekend we watch the NFL referees run up and down the field making calls that can make or break the outc...

Sounds about right. I used to have lunch with Terry McAulay every once in a while when I worked at NSA. He was surprisingly frank about how much he made. Used to rib him a good bit. He left NSA in 2008, but that year he said he made just south of $100,000 I think he said 95, but I can't remember.

Did he say if the league paid for traveling expenses. Because I remember hearing that somewhere. Either from one of my boss's for umpiring baseball.

Lions Fans, Matt Millen is sorry for creating a disaster in Detroit

After failing as the Lions’ team president, Matt Millen settled back into a career as a broadcaster and rarely discussed the mistakes he made in Detroit. But on Sunday, he apologized.

Millen, working the Buccaneers-Colts game on FOX, chuckled as he acknowledged that he never should have been trusted with running a franchise.

“A little bit of a tactical error on my part, I had this fleeting dream that I thought maybe I could run a team,” Millen said. “Sorry, Detroit, it didn’t quite work out.”

Millen is obviously right that it didn’t work out: In 2001 he took over a team that had gone 9-7 the year before, promptly turned them into a 2-14 team his first year, and never even reached .500, with his tenure culminating in the NFL’s only 0-16 season ever in Millen’s final year, in 2008.

The Lions are currently looking for a new General Manager, having just fired Martin Mayhew, who was promoted to the job after Millen was finally fired. The good news for the Lions is that whoever they hire, it can’t possibly be worse than Millen.

Playoff Clinching Scenarios for this week:

No NFL team has clinched a playoff berth yet, but three teams can punch their playoff tickets on Sunday.

The Panthers have the clearest path to the playoffs: If they beat the Saints on Sunday, they win the NFC South. The Panthers can also win the NFC South even if they lose, as long as the Falcons lose to the Buccaneers. And the Panthers can clinch a playoff spot even if they lose and the Falcons win, as long as the Seahawks lose or both the Cardinals and Packers lose.

The Patriots also have a fairly clear path to the playoffs: If the Patriots win and the Jets lose, the Patriots win the AFC East. The Patriots can also clinch a playoff berth even if the Jets win, as long as the Patriots win and either the Chiefs or Steelers lose.

The Bengals need more help: Cincinnati can’t clinch the AFC North this week, but the Bengals can clinch a playoff berth with a win, a Texans loss, a Colts loss and either a Jets loss or both a Broncos win and a Chiefs loss.

Bottom line: The Panthers will probably get their playoff ticket punched this weekend, the Patriots need a little help and the Bengals need a lot of help.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I think the league actually prefers having these kind of things happen. It generates discussion about the league and keeps the attention on the league throughout the week even more than it already is. And at the end of the day, people mostly aim their anger at the refs themselves, not the league.

People would be talking about the league one way or the other.

We would just be talking about football instead of controversies.

The league doesn't want the attention to be negative. There will always be something to discuss one way or the other.
