What would be the risk though? They don't buy advertising time until they already know how many houses the channel reaches right? Forgive my ignorance, I have no idea how this stuff works

Spots are sold based on audience numbers. CBS had them, CBSSPORTS does not. A network can charge far more for a spot than a syndicate can.

Advertisers don't care about what could be, they care about what is. They can reach far more of an audience on CBS than they can on CBSSPORTS as of right now.

It all could change but perception is reality.

If you listen to local radio in the mornings and hear the traffic reports it's not any different. Every single "report" is brought to you by a certain advertiser and that's the only reason we have traffic reports.

So why would NBC and FOX be willing to shift the NFL game to their sports channel instead of the more lucrative main station?

Because of the programming they already have on Thursday nights that will do better numbers than the TNF game.

Because their sports channels reach more homes than CBS Sports.

Because of current successful programming they already have on Thursday nights and the fact that they have a syndicates that reach more homes than any alternative channel.

What shows are on fox and nbc on Thursdays? Real question btw. For me it's either tnf or ps4 time.

Why am I not understanding this? NBC has The Blacklist and The Player on Thursdays, FOX has Sleepy Hollow and the news at 10pm (might be a local thing), and CBS has Mom, Two Broke Girls, and Elementary. Something is going over my head. If you guys need to dumb it down for me please do, sometimes that helps me.

It's moreso about who gets the CBSSPORTS network since it's limited.

FS1 and NBCSN are included in pretty common sports packages whereas CBSSN is not.

Fox and NBC could buy the package and move it to either of those channels and not lose much in advertising money whereas CBS can't.

OK this part is starting to make sense, CBS is the highest rated network right? So it makes sense that they'd get the most advertising money for their main channel. I was looking at it from the wrong perspective. Thanks for the responses and sorry for all the questions lol

CBS doesn't give a **** about CBSSN. They aren't trying to build up their stations unlike FOX and NBC who have been trying to get their sports-centric stations more exposure and could use a cornerstone program to make sure people watch.

How do people watch live sports if they have no cable/dish/DirecTV? If I don't want to purchase an entire sports package (NFL ticket, NBA league pass, etc.) and want to watch the NFL games on Sunday (i.e. local Fox/CBS/NBC), NCAA basketball games during the week (via ESPN), hornets games (Fox Sports South)...how do folks do that?

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

Well you don't need cable or any of that for a local NFL game. Fox, CBS and NBC are all local programming.

Short of that, stream it illegally or go to a bar.

Streaming apps like watch ESPN and just ask a friend who still has cable. I have 5 friends that pay me between $5-10 a month for log-in for HBOGo, watchESPN, FoxSportGo, FXX etc.

I have my parents cable login and an over the air antenna so yeah, watching sports is no problem. Except they don't get NFL Network. But the TNF games on NFLN are usually terrible so I'm okay.
