I just don't know enough about how Russ is going to come in and play. Fields has started 6 games so far, showed the good and bad.

I mean, several players have spoken about Wilson. Several have spoken about Fields, too. I don't recall seeing anything negative about either one, but the more glowing comments are about Wilson.

We'll see what happens. I'll trust the guys in the building over those of us who haven't seen Wilson.

Patrick Queen is leaving it up to Mike Tomlin to handle the starting quarterback situation. But with every indication pointing toward Russell Wilson getting the nod in Week 7, Queen thinks the Steelers will be in good hands. Appearing on the Rich Eisen Show Tuesday, Queen was asked to evaluate Wilson’s play in practice. “He […]

The Justin Fields versus Russell Wilson debate has been talked about from just about every angle going back to March when both were brought into the franchise within a week of each other. But often overlooked is the leadership component of playing the position. Physical talents, making all the throws, and the actual mechanical part […]

Russell Wilson has been named the Pittsburgh Steelers’ lone captain on offense, showing how much leadership he has brought to the team. Even though he hasn’t played a regular-season snap with the Steelers, he is their leader on offense. It’s a testament to how valuable his NFL experience is. Cam Heyward, who was also named […]

After dealing with a calf injury to open training camp, Russell Wilson has returned to action for the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Justin Fields impressed in moments during camp, he had some issues during the first preseason game that may not have left the quarterback competition as open as some think. Although Wilson has practiced less […]

A lot of what is repeated by players is about Wilson's leadership.

If Wilson gets a look and fails, I'll have no issue with going back to Fields. If Wilson is successful, I'll be okay with that. If Fields remains the starter, I'll trust that decision, too.

He definitely is, but if he’s also messing with his young quarterback who got no support for 3 years in Chicago, I don’t agree with his method.

Russ being a leader is great. We know he’s annoyingly positive. But if he can’t play football, leadership only gives you so much of an edge. Gotta win the ballgame between the lines.

Sean Payton couldn’t get anything out of this guy, and now a rookie is running a more effective offense in his place. I have no confidence Russ has anything left in the tank. It would be fine if this was Week 1 because the standard for PIT QB has been extremely low. But now Fields raised it to a level that I don’t think Russ can match on a consistent basis. He has to play pretty much lights out football to justify benching a younger QB with higher potential who’s been playing pretty well for a winning team.

Hate to say it, but just checked Fields contract details and saw that the trade with CHI included a conditional 6th round pick that would become a 4th rounder if he played 51% of PIT snaps…

I think you hit the nail on the coffin with the last part.

I think it’s a lot of drama over two mediocre QBs, one that can run but can’t throw and one who can’t run as well but can throw it a little better.

My initial reaction to slick's post was that I didn't think the conditional draft pick was a factor and I almost replied last night stating that.

Glad I didn't because after thinking about it more and your quip about two mediocre QBs, yeah I do think its a factor. Neither QB moves the needle much or propels them towards being legitimate contenders.

It may very well be rolling the dice with +/- 2 wins in order to trade a 6th round pick for a 4th

(obviously the 2 wins is somewhat arbitrary, the main point is that a change probably won't alter the trajectory of the franchise)

Steeler Fans, what percentage would you say Fields is responsible for, as far as the current record goes?

And I see that he has 10 TDs to 1 INT. As a Qb, have you seen progress from him as far as what he can do now vs what he could do in Chicago?

I'm not going to put a percentage on it, but he's definitely been better than what we've lived with for the past couple of years.

The biggest improvement he has made is not turning the ball over. A lot of that is probably the conservative approach that the coaching staff is instilling in him. The clear game plan for Pittsburgh since Ben retired has been to not put the defense in a bind with turnovers and trust that if you keep the game close, you can win at the end.

That formula has largely worked. They're 4-2 now, and they have been competitive since Ben retired.

The one time they let Fields loose in the passing game was when they fell behind 17-0 to the Colts. He was successful in that game where he was forced to throw.

To answer your question, he is playing better than I expected. I'm not sold on him being the future, but I won't rule it out. It could also be a mirage (think Josh Dobbs or Scott Mitchell).

What is undeniable is his athletic ability. He has done a tremendous job working behind a patchwork offensive line that has been heavily depleted by injuries.

He hasn't made very many boneheaded throws, but he has missed some guys (not an inordinate amount). He could develop into something quite nice, and hey, he's younger than Kenny Pickett.

He's done and said all of the right things, and I don't think he'll sour if the Steelers turn to Wilson.

EDIT: Just saw this. If anyone thinks Fields wouldn't be able to handle being QB2, read/listen to what he is saying. He's not some primadonna that needs coddling. He wants to be in Pittsburgh and loves the organization - he's said it many times. He's not going to be some sourpuss that whines his way out of town like Pickett. I think he can handle whatever comes his way in regards to the depth chart and competition.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Justin Fields has led the team to a 4-2 record in place of Russell Wilson, who’s been recovering from a calf injury. Despite having the Steelers in a good spot, Fields doesn’t think he’s played well enough. With Wilson “in consideration” to start this week, Fields was asked by reporters if he […]
