It certainly does and if I wasn't too tired right now, I'd go ahead post some proof to back up my claim.

The only problem with that "data" is that it doesn't have a definition for what exactly is a star. This saying fits perfectly with this post: "Numbers don't lie, but they don't tell the whole story either".

I just wanted to point out, that I feel bad for Buffalo fans. That pick even moving down to do it was just awful. A huge stretch to make a project player into a first round pick. They should've either traded back to accumulate more picks or pick one of the other several talented players on the board. I saw that pick and I couldn't believe it.

Right, and like anything I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in between. I just believe that a team should try to stock pile as much elite talent as possible and their best chance at doing that is to keep their high round picks and select elite prospects.

Seahawks won the first with the Harvin pick at 25.....

In all seriousness the Rams made great moves. Trading up for a small receiver is tough but they got a lot better. Elam to the Ravens was perfect. Vikings picking up Floyd was a good move but Patterson was way too expensive.

I'm ashamed to be a Cowboys fan, going to change my forum avatar. We traded back to the 31st pick for a 3rd rounder and passed up on S Eric Reid, DT Shariff Floyd, DE Bjoern Werner, DT Slyvester Williams, and S Matt Elam for Travis Fredrick a Center that was projected to go in the 3rd round, smh.

Wow at the Vikings, I like it. We have a lot of pieces and these moves show that we believe in being a contender. Got a WR, a very big steal in a DEF lineman and a corner which essentially replaces Winfield. With Jenkins, improved secondary and a awesome running back it all comes down on Ponder. I have been saying it for a while now, it's his make it or break it year. No reason not to succeed.

If the Vikings manage to get Swope as well I will be so happy. Hell maybe draft Geno if he's around late for the lols. :P

After further review, Vaccaro seems like a great pick. He could seemingly replace Jenkins or Harper, even been mentioned as possible nickel CB

I'll go with 2007, because at 6 years in, we can safely make some calls on it.

This was a pretty stacked draft, so the numbers lean a little heavier towards the first round than other years.

1st Rounders that are "stars": Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, LaRon Landry, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch, Darrelle Revis, Michael Griffin, Dwayne Bowe, Brandon Meriweather, Jon Beason, Anthony Spencer, Joe Staley, Ben Grubbs.

Other First Rounders: JaMarcus Russell (#1), Gaines Adams (#4), Jamaal Anderson (#8), Ted Ginn Jr. (#9), Amobi Okoye (#10), Adam Carriker (#13), Justin Harrell (#16), Jarvis Moss (#17), Brady Quinn (#22), Robert Meachem (#27), Buster Davis (#30)

The secound round had 6 Pro Bowlers drafted. Eric Weddle, Zach Miller, Sidney Rice, LaMarr Woodley, Steve Smith and Ryan Kalil.

Let's say, just for fun, that Green Bay decided to trade down for their #16, and got ripped off. They trade #16 to the Colts for #32 and #42. Instead of taking Harrell, they grab Sidney Rice and LaMarr Woodley.

Ted Thompson and Ron Wolf said it the best.

I think as a general philosophy, I’d rather have more than less. But at the end of the day I’d rather have more quality than anything. But quality and quantity both is a nice thing.

"(You trade up) when you think it’s when you think you see value. That’s the reason sometimes we’ll go backwards, (too) – when we see value later in the draft and numbers at positions where we think there’s value. It’s a trade-off. You know that you’re giving up something if you trade up and you know that you’re giving up something in terms of an opportunity to take a particular player in you go backwards.”
Trading down is dependant on where you pick in the draft, but never is it a bad idea to trade down. Ever.

Edit: Also, candy, getting Shariff Floyd isn't really a steal. He was a media creation (same as Te'o.) There are plenty of people on record saying they never thought he was rated that highly and there are plenty of flaws in his game. Like their other two picks for the most part though.

The Floyd pick was a steal for the Vikings but the Patterson is real iffy, if it hits it's another steal, but he is definitely a high ceiling, low floor kind of guy.

You did noticed I said its "it's Ponders make it or break it year" I have said it many times that I like some of what Ponder has shown and did improve some last year from the previous year. Just because your QB hasn't taken the next step yet doesn't mean you should not take chances on building around one. The NFL is full of surprises and people seem to forget that.

With all the success of first timers in the league recently people seem to forget that most NFL qb's require around 2-3 years to show you where they really are at. It's no secret that I do like ponder however even I know that if he isn't successful this year it's time for a change especially with the offense around him.

You guys and the church of Ted Thompson. Trading down most certainly is not always a good idea.

The Giants have gotten much value in later rounds, hell their rookie classes pretty much won them two superbowls in recent memory. That said, trading back is not synonymous with drafting well, which ProfessorPackman made a point of earlier.

Ask Cleveland if trading back is never a bad idea, ever. They traded Julio Jones for a draft "haul" that turned into Alex Mack, Brandon Weeden, Greg Styles, and Phil Taylor.

I didn't say trading down was always bad. I said it's overrated, and I stand by that. We can go back and forth with outliers all day. I'm saying more often than not, the most talent is in the 1st/2nd round of a draft and a team should aim to make most of their selections in those rounds. There are no absolutes.

Alex Mack was a product of trading down from Mark Sanchez.

Julio netted the Browns Phil Taylor, Brandon Weeden, Greg Little, Owen Marecic, and the 4th round pick used to trade up for Trent Richardson.

While I would love to have Julio he wouldn't be doing much with Colt McCoy throwing him the ball.

Browns needed quantity and they filled a lot of holes with those picks.
