I'm not sure about that one, but Cam said he was told by a ref that he hasn't earned those types of calls yet. Might be what you're referring to, or it might be another situation.

I was hoping for a replay of this hit last night but they just jumped to commercial for end of the quarter and never spoke of it again.

Does Stewart have a reputation for launching headfirst into people? This is just crazy. I just looked him up on Wiki and see that he's been on defenses that are known to play up to the line of decency (STL, BAL) so maybe he's just been trained to play with some dirt under his nails so to speak.

I agree with a lot of the talk on the hits (agree 100% with the lacking of the concussion protocol) but you all also have to remember the fine line between a protected QB playing QB and an unprotected runner.

That's why a lot of running QBs (and Ben) end up getting the short end of the stick because they need to be treated like runners when they run. Otherwise it'd be way too easy for someone like Cam to abuse the protection given when he's intending on gaining yards. In that sense, hitting a runner helmet to helmet is not illegal (remember Pierre Thomas in the playoffs a few years ago). It puts the refs in a tough position.

That last launching hit on Cam was inexcusable imo, but it was also flagged (the flags just offset). I expect many hefty fines to be coming soon after a few of these things get a chance to be reviewed. But personally, I like it better that way, taking a long close look before punishing the players instead of potentially drastically changing a game based on a ref's hunch in the heat of the action.

Some of those hits were inexcusable, no intent to wrap up.

I wonder if after this game when Cam takes off, he slides more feet first vs potential concussions?

No intent to wrap up is just bad form if it's on a runner. That's what I'm saying, it was OBVIOUS on some that he was still a passer (that 1st hit should've drawn a flag imo). But in evaluating we have to remember that everything that happened is allowed to be done to a runner. It's only a QB as a passer and a defenseless WR that draw flags.

Pathetic to me that a great game to open up the season is overshadowed by this concussion/illegal hit bull****. Every game has to have a distraction. It's what I've been warning about for years and years. No focus on the great performances, no focus on the teams, no focus on the actual game. Always gotta be about something else now. A damn shame given how good that game was.

We're never going to be able to enjoy a great game without any other stuff seeping through. NBA-style.

I thought even runners were protected to a degree now? I remember some hoopla about it leading in to last season or the year before, but nothing ever really came of it.

Yeah same here, I believe they even added that running backs were no longer allowed to lead with the crown of the helmet also.

Great opening game though, Carolina burning timeouts and that bad snap on the second kick cost them big time last night.

Runners are not allowed to lead with their helmet outside of the tackle box if I remember correctly.
