The NFL has suspended guys who weren't even under contract with a team at the time, so making him miss games he otherwise would have played isn't a rule.

A win-win for the league. If they suspend, they can say they're harder on sexual assault/harrassment than the law. If they don't, they can fall back that there were no formal charges brought.

Or, they suspend a guy who couldn't even get a grand jury indictment (seriously, to get no billed is either prosecutor incompetence or an intentional tank job) makes them look worse, punishing a guy for unproven allegations.

An underrated element here is that Watson's salary more than tripled this season. If they had given him, say, ten games last year it would have cost him 6.2 million. If they gave him ten games this year it would cost him 21.7 million. Arbitrarily delaying his punishment to the point that it costs him an extra 15 million invites another lawsuit and the NFL has absolutely sucked in court lately.
Bills, Sabres, Illini, Cubs, basically any team that abuses its fanbase and I'm there.

        The Commanders should sign him..lol

The NFL has not announced what his suspension would be. Maybe
Goodell has told teams a round about number of games he will be
        suspended for.
The public has short term memory. They follow an "outrage of the month" thing. Watson was so last year. Its possible someone/something happens to reignite the mob, but that can't be predicted.

        .
Not necessarily. There's a 3rd option -- it only went to the grand jury because of political/public pressure.

Also its hard to prosecute rape, let alone convict.

They’ll take their chances because it’ll cost them nothing in the end.

Watson’s side will of course file an appeal and it may reduce games, but I would not wager on him playing all 17 games

Other than that, good luck trying to understand/figure out their thought process when it comes to player discipline.

Please Atlanta don't trade three 1st plus other stuff for Watson. Also the rams getting four extra draft picks after having only a few picks is quietly pretty big.

              Re: 2022 Offseason Thread

NFL will levy a suspension after Watson is traded and they gauge how much outrage the public expresses over it.

I feel like the NFL may be more interested in rehabbing his image.

That piece about his salary jump factoring in is interesting. I thought the NFL sitting on their hands about a suspension has been kind of BS. Now you add in a large boost in compensation and it looks suspect to suspend now.

I think most all here are in agreement the NFL doesn’t have much rhyme or reason to who gets the hammer and who doesn’t.

Let’s move this to the gambling thread... lol

On his previous 6 year contract, Von Miller got $70M guaranteed, $42M at signing.

His 6 year contract with the #Bills contains $52M guaranteed, $32M fully guaranteed at signing.

It appears to be a 3 years, $53M deal for practical purposes.

Most big contracts are structured around that 3 year milestone. So much so that don't most contract breakdowns look at the earnings in the first 3?

Sometimes I don't get the X guaranteed, with Y fully guaranteed aspect. Something is either guaranteed or not. I get it when it comes to it being guaranteed for injuries, but sometimes it goes into "roster bonuses" and thats when I start scratching my head

Sometimes the guarantees kick in at different times. Take a look at Josh Allen's deal: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-...h-allen-25102/
                                $100M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2021 salary + 2021 roster bonus + 2022 salary + 2022 option bonus + 2023 salary + 2024 roster bonus)
$10M of 2024 salary fully guarantees on the 5th league day of 2022
Additional $13.5M of 2024 salary fully guarantees on the 5th league day of 2023
$10.5M of 2025 salary fully guarantees on the 5th league day of 2024
                                2022 Option Bonus: $42.4M (must be exercised 3/16 - 3/20)
                                2024 Roster Bonus: $6M (fully guarantees 8/11/2021)
2025 Roster Bonus: $25M ($16.5M fully guarantees on the 5th league day of 2023, paid 5th league day of 2025)
                                2026 Roster Bonus: $15M (5th league day of 2026)
                                2027 Roster Bonus: $25M (5th league day of 2027)
                                2028 Roster Bonus: $25M (5th league day of 2028)

$100M guaranteed the day he inked the contract, but a remaining $50 million guarantees over the life of the deal, many times year(s) before its actually paid.
