Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
Last night was hard to watch. I really thought we were going to see a different team. It was the same Broncos that we've been watching for the past couple of years....perhaps sloppier.
Orton just can't make plays when he needs to come through. It's so frustrating to watch. Yes, I know it's not all Orton, but he simply didn't get it done. He didn't. His pocket awareness was awful. They easily left 15 points on the table. What's sad is this was a perfect statement game for Orton, and he blew it.
The only bright spots last night, as I see it, were Decker and Dawkins. Everything else was the same movie that I've seen several times: still no running game, the offensive line was horrible, the defense still can't stop the run, and the offense continues to have problems getting the ball into the endzone. Throw in all the mindless penalties and you have a team that will be lucky to win four this year.
I saw a stat late in the game that said Denver's average yardage to go on 3rd down was 10.7 yards. Pathetic. They aren't going to win many games doing that.
Last night was embarrassing as a Broncos fan. What's even worse is I was very confident they would win that game last night. How can you come out and play like that?!?!?!? It was a new start with new regime, at home on MNF against the hated Raiders who absolutely embarrassed you at home last year and this was your effort?
I'm tired of this. Maybe they will get Luck after all.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
I agree completely. It's VERY frustrating to see Orton standing there after 5 seconds on the 8 yard line, with nobody open, and he throws the ball into the grass. He could've strolled into the end zone, and he chucks it into the dirt. And then, later, to literally run INTO a sack in the end zone is just ridiculous. If Orton thinks 3 and out from the opponent's 10 yard line is acceptable, he has another thing coming.
But yeah, we are right back to square-one. Can't run it, can't stop the run, can't do crap in the red zone. I really hope Coach Fox decides to ditch the power running and goes to zone-blocking. Moreno would SOAR in a Coach Shanahan style of running game.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
Moreno can't even stay healthy so that's a dream by itself. I watched maybe 10 minutes of the game, laughed and turned it off.
Its not shocking to me, I never thought the changes were going to be enough and didnt get ahead of myselfAaron

The offensive line, it's always been a problem with the blocking scheme. It's why, in 2009, we had an "okay" running game because we still used zone-blocking 1/2 the time. Once 2010 hit and it was all power-blocking, our offensive line cannot do a thing.Comment

I'm not saying Tebow should be in there, but Orton HAS to step it up. If he can't, they have to try something different. Everything Orton has struggled with the last two years once again reared it's head last night: ineffectiveness in the red zone, inability to convert third downs, lack of pocket awareness, and the inability to be a playmaker. I know Tebow isn't ready, but if this continues I'd rather see him out there learning on the job than watching this train wreck of an offense that they run with Orton.
On Oakland's first offensive play, I was so pumped up when Miller caused Ford to fumble and Moore recovered it on the 15. I thought.. 'Okay! Here we go!'. Then I was completely deflated to watch them settle for yet another field goal. Enough. They have got to figure this out.
I'm trying to take this in stride, but it's hard. I had last night down as a win. I am amazed they only lost by three.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
Yeah, I get why Dilfer would nod approvingly. He was never more than a game manager. Sometimes, as a QB, you just have to say "F it, I want a touchdown!" and take that ball in.
At this point, I'm being objective. It's just one game, and Coach Fox isn't quite so stubborn as McD was. We'll see if he makes adjustments going forward. I'll say this: I'm stunned we didn't throw more screen passes with the way the Raiders were blitzing us.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
I'm just venting. You can't have a knee-jerk reaction following one game.
I remember watching the Broncos go to Miami in week 1 of 2005. They looked absolutely horrible that game. They went 13-2 the rest of the year to finish 13-3 and ended up hosting the AFC Championship game.
That's not happening this year, but I need a little light in this dark tunnel. What makes me mad is you wait and wait for opening night, going into it with high hopes, only to watch your team churn out a stinker like this.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
That's funny. I was just talking to my brother about that very same thing. You have to do something to slow up that rush. Screens, hot routes, whatever. DO SOMETHING! Especially when you got guys like Lloyd, Royal, and Decker who can run with the ball after catching it. Againts a blitz, it's very easy for a five yard quick slant to turn into a huge gain. Never happened. Why?Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
A lot of issues to address, but I'm comfortable with an all around football brain like Fox handling this team rather than an offensive wiz kid like McD.
I know how this forum feels about Tebow, but he really would have been a better option in the redone. The crowd would've went crazy and his legs would've gotten DEN a score.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
IMO, the QB issue boils down to this: is Orton the future? Maybe Elway/Fox think so, but from 1 season+ I don't think anyone else would say he is. What do you gain by playing him and sitting Quinn/Tebow?
I think they are going to tread water until they move on from Orton...I know he's not the offense's entire issue, but he just isn't a top starter in the NFL imo. If they insert Quinn or Tebow at least they see what they have with each of them and they can look to trade Orton to a team that loses it's QB (Indy maybe?). If Quinn/Tebow suck and aren't the future, then you are in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. Moving forward with Orton, imo, accomplishes nothing."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I think you have to give Orton a chance til around week 6. If they are are not looking good then you go with Quinn or Tebow. And as the last poster said if it keeps going bad you have a chance at Luck.
And honestly I would love to get Luck just to laugh at Harbaugh. Cause you know he wants Luck and he had a chance to be here. I know sounds ridiculous but a little disappointed he ended up in SF instead of Denver.
I also believe that Denver needs to figure out Moreno's fumbling issue or find a new running back. I understand he didn't get a lot of carries and the offensive line is young. But his fumbling issues are getting old.Texas A&M Aggies

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
Orton will likely be the quarterback until the Broncos essentially throw in the towel this year. I have a feeling that the Bronocos will win here and there just enough to keep Orton in there for a while. If they lose to Cincy and Tennessee, they are looking at 0-5 and that might be it. My guess is they will be sitting at 2-3, but who knows after the Monday night debacle. I thought they'd be going into Green Bay sitting at 3-0. Silly me.
Orton is a good quarterback when everything goes as planned. That's why he looks so great in practice. In games, the majority of Orton's success comes when he hits his 3, 5, or 7 step drop and the ball comes out immediately. If that isn't there, things deteriorate rather quickly. Things rarely go just as they are drawn up on the board and you have to be able to improvise every now and then make a play when nothing is there - especially in the redzone.
I want a quarterback that can carry the team at critical times. If that guy had an 8 on his jersey, it wouldn't bother me a bit. Orton just doesn't appear to be that guy. He's proven it time and time again.Comment
