That is an interesting comparison. A lot of people point to Elway as a running QB, but John Elway wasn't really that type of QB at all. He was a scrambling QB in the same way Fran Tarkenton was: buying time in the back field. Elway's eyes never stopped looking downfield, and his arm was so strong that he could fire the ball across the field. Tebow was more of an option QB who will take off downfield, a la Michael Vick. Elway, coming out of college, was more NFL-ready than Tebow is, simply because Elway relied on his arm and Tebow relied on his legs.

When Elway was younger, he got away with some throws simply because he could fire the ball so hard that defenders couldn't close the door quick enough. Jay Cutler does the same thing. But that only takes you so far, and Elway admitted that when he said he had to become a pocket QB in order to win a Super Bowl.

Not to poke the bears...but I've been following the discussion between Broncos86, Jonsco28 and wwharton and found this article:

I am in complete agreement with this article.

All I'm going to say is I disagree with the article, and that's all. I'm not going back to the argument.

Didn't the CBS affiliate (KCNC I believe) lose their rights to Broncos' games? I might be wrong about this, but I seem to remember reading something about this.

If so, is Reggie Rivers still going to do the preseason games?

You're correct, NBC is doing the game.

After the first series, I thought Tebow looked pretty good. He needs to stop running so much, get out of bounds/slide when he does, but I don't see how anyone could say he played poorly.

Right, agreed on all points. Honestly, each QB played well. I was impressed with Brady Quinn. Obviously, we aren't going to see the 1's very much in the first game. But it was great to see the running game take off like that. Orton had some nice passes. Would've been nice to get a TD on that first drive, but so it goes. Tebow had some nice strikes, but he has to avoid getting hit like that.

Overall, a pretty good game. I really liked Jeremiah Johnson (RB). I hope we keep this guy, I think he could be a great addition.

                  Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread

Just a few observations from me as I was at the mercy of the NFL network tonight and won't get to watch the entire game until Saturday:

Opening drive was great until they got inside the 10, I loved the various sets they used and it was great to see a commitment to the running game. McCoy got away from what made the drive successful near the endzone BUT it is the preseason so I won't put much stock in failing to finish that drive with a TD.

Tebow is fun to watch. Very raw and he is not ready to start but there is potential there. He may not be happy, but I think another year to develop will help him more than anything.

Julius Thomas should NOT be put into any blocking situations yet, I realize as a TE he needs to be able to block, but he almost got Tebow killed. I love his potential, but he is a receiving tight end, don't ask him to do something that he isn't.

The defense as a whole was impressive (from what I saw), I'm looking forward to watching the full game, but in the snippets I saw, it seemed there was quite a bit of intensity.

It's just the preseason, but I was happy with most of what I saw. I wish I could have seen some more of Quinn, but the NFL N pretty much quit on that game as soon as Tebow was out.

And something needs to be said for Prater, we've never talked about him, nor has anyone else around the league, but I think he is one of the best kickers in the league. He is consistently accurate. He is a huge asset for the Broncos and they need to keep him around for awhile.

I went to the NFL.com page and they had some clips up of Quinn...he looked really impressive from what I saw. Best I've seen him look in the NFL, preseason or otherwise.

Can anyone explain why it was such a big deal Tebow completed that 40+ yard bomb last night?

HE WAS THE HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER

And arguably the BEST College QB of all time.. And his skill sets will trescend in the NFL. What these dumb founded media fail to realize is that the QB position is changing and a new era led by Tim Tebow & Cam Newton are leading the way.

It's interesting you bring up the Heisman. I was listening to KOA 850 yesterday as I drove home, and a caller brought it up too.

                          1989 Andre Ware Houston
                          1990 Ty Detmer Brigham Young
                          1992 Gino Torretta Miami (Fla)
                          1993 Charlie Ward Florida State
                          1996 Danny Wuerffel Florida
                          2000 Chris Weinke Florida State
                          2001 Eric Crouch Nebraska
                          2002 Carson Palmer USC
                          2003 Jason White Oklahoma
                          2004 Matt Leinart USC
                          2006 Troy Smith Ohio State

Take a look at that list of recent Heisman QBs. Out of those, only Palmer has really done anything. Winning the Heisman as a QB just doesn't translate to the NFL. It's no indication that you're ready to be an NFL QB. As a QB, your best asset should always be your ability to throw the ball. When your best asset is your legs, you aren't forced to learn how to progress through reads, or manuever inside the pocket. You just run.

I have to respectfully disagree with the assessment that the QB position is changing. I've seen no evidence of this. Running QBs have to be able to throw the ball. Even Michael Vick is figuring that out. Coaches do not want their starting QB, who they rely on heavily, to take a shot and get knocked out for several games (or the year). Vick missed FOUR games last year due to injuries he sustained while running. There have always been QBs who run with the ball (Cunningham, Young, etc). Many of those QBs left the game early due to injuries that effectively ended their careers.

It was a nice pass Tebow threw. It was accurate, and it was from the pocket. It was nice. But I'm more interested in watching Tebow go through his progressions and find his second or third option. If you watched the game in full, watch how Brady Quinn handles that. On a variety of plays, you can see him progressing through reads. That's what Tebow needs to do, instead of tuck the ball and run. Tebow took some shots that I'd rather not have him take. The pass to Mathew Willis (the deep ball) was a nice pass, but it was his first read. Nevertheless, good game by Tebow, and I hope to see more of that.

                            Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread

I watched the game last night after insulating myself all day Friday from what happened.

For the most part, I liked what I saw from their first preason game. I came away with much more optimism than I thought possible. The defense seemed to generate more consistent pressure, and their run defense shouldn't be nearly as porous as it has been. I liked the different looks they showed.

Moreno and McGahee looked good as well. That running game might be there after all (fingers crossed). Loved seeing that run by Moreno where he was hit it the backfield, sput out of it, and turned it into a nice gain. That's what I've been waiting for from him. He seemed quicker than he has been. I think M&M will be a nice tandem.

I also thought all three quarterbacks played well. Understanding it was against the 3's, but that was the best I've seen Quinn look in a Bronco uniform.

It disturbed me to see Tebow run as much as he did. I want to see him do that when there is open field ahead of him and he can take what he can get and get out of bounds or slide - I don't think he'll ever do that, though, because it isn't his mentality. He's going to get injured doing what he did Thursday night. The designed QB run up the middle from the shotgun also bothered me. Why? I can see that on a 3rd and 1 in a critical game situation, but I believe that was on first down (in a preseason game) and it just didn't make any sense to me.

I hated to see the game end the way it did with the secondary meltdown, but overall I was happy with the performance. Good feelings about the Fox era.

                              So, some news:

                              1) Ty Warren looks to be toast, with a torn tricep. Doubt we see him again.
                              2) Marcus Thomas has a strain, out for the preseason.
                              3) Lendale White was released, no big shocker here. He was lackluster, despite being a local boy.
                              4) We picked up LB Alvin Bowen off waivers from Jacksonville.

With Warren and Thomas out, this means Vickerson and Bunkley become our starting DTs.

There has been quite a bit up uproar about how Ty Warren's injury really hurts Denver. I'm not so sure I agree with this. Bad luck, yes, but I guess Denver's past history with signing older D-lineman was a little bit concerning to me from the beginning.

I was glad to hear that Thomas should be back by the opener.
