Remember to save often and to keep backups of your save files when using this editor. If you have questions, need help or find any bugs, post in this thread or message me.

    Features for roster makers:

    - Remove old player photos (it's automatic for Roster files).
    - Change any player's head to any of the more than 450 3D models that exist in the game.
    - Stop the commentators from calling players by the wrong names.
    - Add or remove Elite, Veteran and Enforcer status.
    - Spreadsheet import and export for any number of players or whole rosters.
    - Global attribute edits (absolute, relative, scaled).
    - Copy and paste attributes from one player to another, even between save files.
    - Fast editing: click a value to edit it, and use the tab key to cycle through attributes.
    - Edit lines, move players and control lineup status (dress, scratch, minors, etc.).
    - Delete a player entirely so that he does not even appear in the free agents list.

    For franchise-mode players:

    - Draft class editing and sharing (via importable spreadsheets).
    - Edit player contracts individually (or re-balance salaries for all teams)
    - Freely edit non-player teams.
    - Recover players from the waiver wire and unblock players "stuck" on waivers.
    - Force players into retirement, or stop one from retiring.
    - Reset player fatigue (helps with back-to-back games, for example).
    - Set player morale/happiness.
(Season mode save files are also supported.)

    Save-file repair:
    - Fix game freezes caused by a player being signed to more than one team.
    - Fix game freezes caused by an RFA's Holdout or Unsigned status.
    - The editor rebuilds the free-agent list when you save, which corrects some freezes.

    Console support:

The editor now supports both the PS3 and XBox 360 versions of NHL2K8. Roster, Season and Franchise-mode saves from both consoles can be opened and edited (as of version 0.14). No additional software is needed for use with the PS3, but XBox users will need to use software that supports save-file injection, such as Horizon, Modio, or Velocity along with the editor.

Rosters can also be safely migrated between the two consoles using the Spreadsheet Export/Import function. (Roster saves created on one platform (PS3/360) can in fact be loaded directly on the other, but doing so will cause player equipment to become discolored, so the spreadsheet method is recommended.)

    System requirements

The software should run on Windows, Linux and Mac (I haven't tested it on a Mac). For Windows and Mac, the Java 8 framework (or higher) must be installed first. If you don't have it, it's free to download here. The minimum Windows version for Java 8 is Vista.

For Linux users, there are two sets of requirements depending on what version of Linux you use. Some versions of Linux run the editor with only Java installed, but other versions (like Ubuntu) also require Open JFX to be installed. (In Ubuntu, you can easily install Open JFX by opening a terminal and keying in sudo apt-get install openjfx.)

    Running the editor

For Windows, the program should execute on double-click. If not, either .jar files are associated with a program other than Java, or Java 8 or better is not installed.

For Linux, usage varies. On Lubuntu at least, you can execute the program by right-clicking the file and choosing "OpenJDK Java Runtime". Again, Java/Open JFX must be installed first!

Latest download link (November 26, 2018):

This editor comes without ANY warranty. Use it at your own risk. By using the editor, you also agree to the terms of use (see "Help", "Terms of use" in the app's main menu).

    Version 0.16:
    Windows users, download here (.exe):
MediaFire is a simple to use free service that lets you put all your photos, documents, music, and video in a single place so you can access them anywhere and share them everywhere.

On December 4 in year 2 (2008-2009) of Franchise Mode in NHL 2K8, on the custom roster I made using the editor, the game softlocks while simulating the season for an unknown reason. While I can still try to stop the simulation, and while the soundtrack still plays, the simulation freezes, and I can't even stop it because the commands that would normally pop up after I quit don't pop up. What is the issue the game can't handle here, and is there a way to prevent it?

Probably a player from one of the historical teams crept into Franchise mode somehow. Players from the historical teams will freeze the game on your second season around December if they have "unsigned" or restricted free agent status.

In the editor, do Repair -> Clear RFA Holdout status.

This should unblock the game for the rest of your season. But the problem will probably come back every season until the players causing the problem lose their RFA eligibility.

If you can figure out which players are causing the problem, you could just delete them completely. Usually they will be RFAs with IDs in the range 1594-2870. They could be on any team in the NHL.

      For everyone else's reference:

First things to try if Franchise Mode freezes:

      1. Back up your save file before doing anything... as always.

      2. Run all of the actions in the editor's Repair menu:
      • Clear RFA Holdout status
      • Fix Duplicate Signings
      • Rebuild Free Agent List

      3. Then do Batch -> Roster Actions -> Clear Waiver Wire

That should fix the most common problems.

Anybody know what setting a player as veteran or elite status does? I assume Enforcer is a fighter.

For example in a lot of rosters I'm downloading I'm seeing Crosby as Elite = N, but Malkin as Elite = Y. Which doesn't make sense to me.

"- Add or remove Elite, Veteran and Enforcer status."

          Re: NHL 2K8 Editor (Snowdrift)

Enforcer status doesn't strictly have to do with fighting; it's for the intimidation system. If you enable enforcers in the game settings, players with this enforcer flag set will be indicated by a red arrow when on the ice, and will be able to intimidate other players. Intimidated players are marked with a blue arrow.

This is not to be confused with the Enforcer player type. It obviously makes sense for enforcer types to have the enforcer flag set, but you could set it for non-enforcers too. For example, I don't see any reason why an aggressive power forward shouldn't be able to intimidate other players, even if he's also the top scorer on his team.

Elite and Veteran status are both boosts to a player's development in Franchise Mode.

A player with either status (or both) will develop faster and have a higher potential ceiling in his twenties, and will decline more slowly in his thirties. A player can earn or lose elite status at any time based on his season totals. Veteran status is earned by number of games played and never goes away once earned.

Veteran status also boosts the player's chemistry with other players on a line.

You say Crosby doesn't have Elite status, but that's probably because he has Superstar status instead.

Got it. So for example I downloaded your last roster from Nov 2018 just to mess around in the editor.

I see Malkin as Elite in the editor, but Crosby isn't - but like you said he could be a superstar. I see a column specifically for Vet/Elite/Enf, is there one for superstar?

How would I know if a player has achieved superstar status in the editor (if possible). And if we can't see this in the editor, would it be through the game itself under View Rosters?

EDITOR UPDATE TO VERSION 0.17 (Sep 4, 2020)

Just a small update to finally allow global edits for forwards or defensemen separately. Being limited to just "skaters" or "goalies" frankly didn't make much sense.

Download from the first post. Let me know if you run into any issues.

Hey Snowdrift we previously talked about player types and how there are a set amount for each roster.

How did you choose player types for your rosters? Was it the same formula you used for the 2K5 port?

I generally chose the player type manually for my 2K8 rosters.

                    About Draft Classes...

As someone who has never really drafted in-depth in a 2K game how would one go about building a draft class with the editor?

Would it be a fun process or would it be tedious? On Google I don't see many good sources for draft classes so making historical ones might be a pain.

Do you rate the players on how much talent they ended up having or their perceived potential?

I tried that, and the draft class was reverted to what it originally was.

                        Re: NHL 2K8 Editor (Snowdrift)

Probably tedious. All the editor supports is manual editing of the existing draft class. Right now you can't import/export these players (until drafted), so you can't share or re-use a draft class.

(Warning: wait until the draft starts to edit, otherwise the game will just overwrite your edits.)

Not sure I understand your last question. If you're asking about old draft classes, that depends on whether or not you're okay with unhistorical results.

If you're talking about current draft classes, there's no easy solution for ratings. You could:

                        1. Start with what you think the player should be rated in his prime, then deduct from each attribute the amount it grows over an average Franchise-mode career. Downsides:
                        • You have to know the average numbers to subtract.
                        • Growth varies by player. Don't know if there's a way to set potential.
                        • Too low of a rating will bury a player, and he'll never be used by the CPU.
                        • This will initially result in ridiculously low ratings in areas the player is strong in.

                        2. Rate based on how you think he would perform if played in the NHL right away. Problem is, this probably means a higher rating, so the player might develop beyond his realistic potential.

If you're making a roster to share, probably go with #2.

It's not an exact science anyway, so I'd probably cheat. Maybe just rename similar players in the draft class. Or auto-draft, then edit players only when you (or the CPU) need them.

Anyone know why I lose all my player pictures if I edit the default 2k8 rosters? I'm not selecting to remove players photos but they seem to disappear if i do one change to anything.

I was trying to increase global aggression stats and lower composure so thought it was that but just changing one stats on any player removes all pictures.
