    Avery suspended indefinitely

The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars' forward Sean Avery indefinitely, pending a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and Avery will not be playing in tonight's game against the Calgary Flames.

Avery is being suspended for disparaging remarks he made this morning in reference to Calgary player Dion Phaneuf and Phaneuf's girl friend Elisha Cuthbert, who previously had a relationship with Avery.

"I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada," Avery said on camera this morning in Calgary. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

The hearing will take place in accordance with the NHL Constitution, for conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey," the NHL announced today.

Wow...is that really that bad? He's kinda stating the truth, while it's not a classy comment, I dunno...suspension seems harsh, especially with the NHL's spotty record suspending guys for illegal hits.

Seems like the veterans, Modano and Turco, are getting tired with this nonsense. The only funny joke in this whole situation is Avery, since he isn't playing tonight. Good job!

I have to admit that's funny but Avery is a sideshow like nothing else i've seen. The guy just doesn't know when to stop. I don't see how this suspension will last long. You can't suspend a guy for making truthful remarks

I think it's BS, I mean it is kind of the truth. I'm of the opinion that hockey needs to get over itself. It's not like Avery is setting a bad example off the ice, he is just talking trash and bringing some originality to it. He challenges convention, big deal.

Within like 6 hours of reading the original interview from Avery the NHL handed-down his suspension. Kind of surreal seeing the whole thing basically go down right in front of me at my desk via TSN.ca. Wow, the NHL isn't pulling any punches when it comes to this guy.
Although he's highly entertaining to the average fan, he kind of makes the league look bad. Last year's performance in the playoffs was kind of disturbing. I still can't believe he was able to get that close to Brodeur...on more than one occasion! Some teams would never have put up with that...even in the playoffs.

Should be dangled over a blazing inferno for talking about Kim Bauer like that.

I just saw this on Sportscenter and had to come into the hockey forum. They're suspending him for that?!

It's not like he lured Kim into the cabin like Kevin Dillon did...

It's a accumulative thing. The league has more or less allowed Avery to be a jackass for the longest time. I agree though that this is the silliest thing to suspend him for.

Whats wrong with sloppy seconds? Especially his. Seriously? Anyone????

I am sure he is not the first or the last hockey player to have hand-me-down girls to other hockey players.

If he said nothing, its still true. And how is it detrimental to hockey. It has nothing to do with hockey unless they talk about letting one slip past the goalie.

While it is funny it is also disrespectful that it is not even funny! You don't say that stuff to the press. I wish they would let him play and let Deon clock this clown out the league! This guy is LOW CLASS. He should be in the NFL or the NBA, not NHL!

Do you want someone to say your wife or girlfriend is their sloppy seconds?

While really odd to suspend him for that, I think it has to do a lot with comments he made earlier in the season as well. He's a jerk, and I couldn't be happier to see him not on the ice.

                            He doesn't respect the game.

This is so stupid. The NHL doesnt do anything about the constant cheap shots, head hunting, and guys slamming players head 1st into the boards but they bring the hammer down for this? Really?
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"
