Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
This is so dumb.
How does this tarnish the NHL?
Do people who don't follow sports even know the NHL is still in existence?
Give me a break. This is so ridiculous. If I were Avery I would consider possible legal action for being suspended over something this small.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
Comment was dumb & crass. Not in the least bit funny. Trash talk should be limited to the opponent & fans alone. Not family or loved ones. Especially using that term on camera. What guys say in private conversation shouldn't be said where it can be replayed over & over again.Originally posted by VP Richard M. Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
Your comment is ridiculous....The NHL is suspending him AGAIN because they have had enough of his antics...You say he should consider legal action...My question is how can a man who has been suspended for insulting french canadians, calling an african american player a "monkey" and had his teammates in Los Angeles basically ask managment to get rid of him make a case for himself......He is a turd and i look forward to the day he is out of the NHL.....Comment

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
I don't mind suspending him, but its a one game max thing imo, as someone else mentioned they don't suspend for so many cheap shots (they shouldn't for head shots unless they make them illegal however) but then they suspend for this? Indefinitely? wtf.
I prefer a big fine, not the typical pennies fine of several thousand dollars that is nothing to an athlete, like $25,000 minimum. Hit him where it hurts, and keep fining players who make inappropriate comments that hurt the leagues image and reputation.Comment

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
If this was a NBA player or a NFL player who was black everyone would have said I can't take it anymore, the thuggery, the low class players they have in the league. I just can't watch those sports.
NBA and NFL are no more hippocrites than the NHL.Comment

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
I think part of the problem in the NHL's eyes (not saying it's right) is that Avery approached a rolling TSN camera on his own accord to make the statements. They weren't part of a planned interview or anything, he just walked up to the camera in the tunnel and spouted off, or at least that's how I interpreted the original story I read.
Anyways, he seems to be a jerk (unless it's all an act as was implied in a Hockey News story a few months ago) that likes to run his mouth. If he would back it up on the ice more often (I've seen him perform some Claude Lemieux worthy turtles), maybe people would have as much of a problem with his antics. Speaking of which, I think they said on NHL on the Fly that he was referring to Dion Phaneuf. I'd love to see the first time they're on the ice together -- of course Avery will probably turtle anyways.
PS - I'm surprised he didn't work "going five-hole with my..." in thereComment

Honestly, in any other league this is a fine. It's like Shaq saying something outlandish.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
"Sloppy seconds" is derogatory of course.
However, it was out of line what he said and I was being a bit "tongue-in-cheek" with my comments. He has a history of shooting his mouth off, so its not like a one time deal.
He will be back. Probably a 3 game suspension or something. If Bertuzzi can come back after only 20 games you know?Last edited by Matt Diesel; 12-03-2008, 01:08 PM.Return of the MackComment

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
The whole crux of the issue here is that Avery is a total douchebag who has demonstrated before that he has no class, nor any respect for the game. Take your average joe NHL player and put those remarks in his mouth and he probably escapes without incident. But put them in the mouth of Sean Avery and his already-checkered past and you've got a suspension.
My main problem with it is that once again, Bettman has removed the ability for the NHL to police itself. That's what's so great about the game - take a run at someone and you're going to pay the price somewhere down the line within the context of the game, just like Avery was likely going to get his face beaten in by Phaneuf or someone else in response to these remarks. Fine, let him take his medicine on the ice instead of saving him with a suspension. But Bettman, through his continued support of the instigator penalty and through his actions here, doesn't want the NHL to police itself on the ice and that's a real shame.
But yeah, we could talk on and on about how there's no consistency with suspensions and fines anymore, in any sport. Give a guy a concussion with a barely-legal hit in football? Great play! Score and celebrate by pretending to give the ball CPR? 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty! WTF?Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
IMO, the issue here is that he made derogatory comments about someone who is not part of the NHL and he did it on camera, in an NHL locker room. He's crossing the line between the game and people's private lives. Girlfriends, wives and kids should be off-limits when it comes to any kind of public trash talking.
I don't care what these guys say to each other on the ice to get a rise out of each other (which is undoubtedly much worse) but letting such public comments slide is opening the door to more derogatory comments about players' loved ones, who are not all in the public eye as Elisha Cuthbert and Rachel Hunter are. This can't be good for the league or the people mentioned in those comments.Comment

Re: Avery suspended indefinitely
I don't understand these NHL head morons. This guy isn't doing anything bad. He's just being a jackass. It's not like he's PacMan Jones or getting caught with drugs or something like that. He's a colorful guy and he made some comments to the press to try and get under someone's skin. He used the term "sloppy seconds" but he could have said 12,000 things that would be more derogatory than that. His character might not be the greatest hahaha, but at least he's got some type of character. He's a guy that demands attention and people are willing to give it to him so what's the big deal? They've already got their next hero in Crosby, well now they need a villian. No wonder the NHL is going down the tubes. They do nothing about all the fights on the ice but they're ready to go through all this trouble over some catty comments? Get the **** outta here. It's a league that can't stand just a little bit of originality.Comment
