He's a colorful guy and he made some comments to the press to try and get under someone's skin. He used the term "sloppy seconds" but he could have said 12,000 things that would be more derogatory than that. His character might not be the greatest hahaha, but at least he's got some type of character. He's a guy that demands attention and people are willing to give it to him so what's the big deal? They've already got their next hero in Crosby, well now they need a villian. No wonder the NHL is going down the tubes. They do nothing about all the fights on the ice but they're ready to go through all this trouble over some catty comments? Get the **** outta here. It's a league that can't stand just a little bit of originality.
So you'd find it acceptable if public trash talking about players' girlfriends/wives/kids became common place? Because letting this slide would set a precedent. I doubt any major pro sports league would tolerate such a thing.

Avery is hardly a new villain. He has a long history of saying controversial stuff, disrespecting the game (the Brodeur incident) and basically being a jerk. His antics started even before the lockout. His teammates hated him in LA and his teammates in Dallas can't stand him right now. In fact Dallas has publicly stated that they would have suspended him is the NHL hadn't. After a game this year MOdano said he was a disgravce to the game.

        Re: Avery suspended indefinitely

Cmon guys! To those saying they can't believe he is suspended; what can't you believe? He was suspended for one, he has a pretty classless track record, HE approached the cameras and made sure they were all rolling, and finally, as stated by quite a few in this thread already, he's at work. Would you like it if you're coworker called your wife sloppy seconds?

Then again, I agree with Skerik on this one. If Avery played last night he would've had a pretty damn big target on his back, especially from one of the NHL's biggest hitters, Dion Phaneuf.

Also, when the veterans, owner and coaches of the team are commenting AGAINST their own teammate, it's obvious that he's a NEGATIVE distraction to the team. If only he kept his dumb remarks on the ice, maybe he would benefit his team more.

Dunno if you've seen this guys but it looks like Avery's days as a Star may be coming to a close

              Bob McKenzie link

              The most telling part?

It's too early to say with 100 per cent certainty that Sean Avery will never play another game for the Dallas Stars, but it is fair to say his future with the NHL team in very much in question. Very much.

So much so that Avery's attempt to issue an apologize to his teammates and the organization through the organization was summarily rejected by the club today.

Sources tell TSN that Avery's personal publicist reached out to the Stars' president on Wednesday morning in an effort to get the club, in conjunction with Avery, to issue a formal apology by means a press release.

The Stars made it clear to Avery's representative that the door was not open for that to happen, that they wanted nothing to do with it. Avery later in the day issued a press release apology of his own that was not issued or sanctioned by the team.

yall should hear the Stars players comment on the whole thing. You can tell they HATE the guy and want him gone. The worse part is that he makes Brett Hull look bad for sticking his neck out for him after signing him for huge money on a 4 year deal. This was a bad signing from the jump. It's like buying a pit bull and getting pissed when it bites your kid. I think Avery's time in Dallas is done. Even going back to training camp you could see this coming. None of his teammates have had his back on this. Dude is total douche and he has probably written his own ticket out of town. Maybe the Stars can now get on track for the season.

                        Avery's NHL career is over:

                        http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/james_duthie/?id=258309

Some of the more interesting quotes from Stars players who wanted to remain anonymous:

We hope it's the last time we ever see him," says one veteran.
Our locker room is the happiest it has been all year right now," says another player.
"An apology (to the team) won't work," says a third player. "There isn't much he can say to change the way we feel right now. We have a lot of pride in this organization. He isn't welcome here anymore."
"He's been undermining everything we do," says the veteran. "He doesn't pay attention; he's not smart enough to play our system. He can't do some drills properly. He says it's because he's 'independent.'
Really, he's just not smart enough."
                        Also:

Sources say Dallas owner Tom Hicks is already exploring every possible way to get rid of Avery.
On the way in to work I was listening to XM204, Home Ice and they played an interview with co-GM, Les Jackson. He said that there's no chance Avery will be back as a Star as they see it impossible to bring him back in when everyone on that team doesn't want him back.

It was also reported that Brett Hull is livid with Avery. He was the driving force to bring him into the Big D and had to convince Jackson and Hicks to sign him.
This could very well be the end of Hull's tenure as a manager with the Stars.

The big issue is what to do with Avery.
If you don't want the Cap hit, you have to send him to the minors. But reports have it that Jackson and Hicks don't want him anywhere near their farm team either, worrying that he'll be a horrible influence on the kids they have there.
They could bury him in the ECHL though. That might be an option.

The other one is to buy out his contract. But then his salary will counted against the Cap.

But I think it's clear that no other NHL team will take a bite on him. His NHL playing days are over.

This reminds me of when I worked with at a school for "court-adjudicated youth" (ie, bad kids). Sometimes you just hit a last straw and no matter how serious or not the most resent infraction is, you finally just say enough is enough.

Avery will be lucky to ever get another chance with an NHL team. I think his only chance to continue his hockey career would be to go to the KHL, ala Ray Emery. Really, I think their situations are similar in many ways. Losing favor with management or the league brass is one thing, but when players start saying the things they did, you're toast...

That's just it. NHL players talk. The grapevine is active and large. I can't see another NHL locker room saying "Yeah, bring in Avery. We need him".
From LA to Dallas, too many teammates have had issues with him. He made fun of Dustin Brown's lisp for crying out loud.

No matter how bad a team is, or how much help they might need, I don't see him ever playing in an NHL uniform again.
And to be honest, I'm not sure the KHL would want him either.
He's already talked disparagingly about French-Canadian players, woman and rumored to have made some racial slurs. What do you think he'd do in Europe? He'd probably insult their culture too.

I see Avery getting bought out or buried in the ECHL or an even lower-end league.
He's done and he has nobody to blame but himself.

At this point, I think the bigger drama will come from what happens to Hull. He's the sole reason why Avery was signed in Dallas and had to convince Les Jackson and Tom Hicks to approve the deal. He could very well share a cab with Avery out of town.

It definitely has some comedic elements to it. And I think if this was done by any other player, it wouldn't be a big deal. But too many people are tired of his act.

I don't think Avery's even that talented. His stats are terrible and he's never helped one of his teams past the 2nd round. He's far more bark than bite.
