    Re: Avery suspended indefinitely

What he did wasn't very classy, and certainly not appropriate behavior from someone in a position that is looked up to by impressionable minds, but at the same time I can't get over how strong the reaction is to this.

Todd Bertuzzi almost paralyzes a guy and he's still playing the league. Sean Avery acts like an ******* but has still been an effective player the last few years, but then trashes someone's girlfriend and he should be out of the league forever?

Maybe he's at the point now where he has gotten out of control, but can't a wake up call like this work for him? The Rangers seemed to be better with him in the lineup when he wasn't being as outrageous, maybe he should be given another chance with the stipulation that he tone it down?

      It's all relative.
If it was any other player, it would have been 2 games tops and the media would have forgotten about it.

But Avery has been mouthing off for a few years now about everything from fellow players, the commissioner to TSN analysts.
And his actions on the ice - especially the Brodeur incident with the stick waving - put the spotlight on him even more.

Saying all of that, what he did to get the suspension is peanuts compared to the real issue that's hidden beneath. He lost the respect and trust from his own teammates.

I don't know if this is an accurate statement, but I get the feeling that a hockey lockeroom is the tightest-knit unit in all of pro sports. If hockey players turn you out, you're finished.
In football, basketball and baseball, it doesn't seem to be as bad. Afterall, T.O., Man-Ram and Artest all found new homes without much problems.

But Avery has locked himself out of his own fraternity. What he said about ex-girlfriends is one thing, but this guy has embarassed his teammates one too many times. And it sounds like he was already on the outskirts before this happened.
That's what's made this incident such a hot topic in the NHL.

I agree with you 100%. It definitely seems that way(regarding hockey being a tight group).
It's very much like the firehouse. You can break balls....argue....even a punch here and there is not out of the question.....but there is a certain line and if you cross it, you might as well be on a rowboat in the middle of the North Atlantic. You're done.
Even if you try and go to another house...they will get the call...one step in the wrong direction and you're in for a LOOOOONG(and unhappy) career.
The phrase "dead to me" sounds appropriate.

Exactly. The NHLPA is a tight group. I imagine the Stars players have gotten the word out to other lockerrooms about this idiot. Most team captains might protest to management if they even think about bringing this guy in.

What's hilarious is that Avery knows it. I didn't believe one word from that cardboard apology. He was only doing that to save his job.

I won't be surprised if his next career is in the media of some kind where he'll blast the NHL whenever he gets the chance.

He's going to play in Europe...just watch. Maybe he can roll with Emery, or someone.

              Re: Avery suspended indefinitely

I somewhat disagree with how this was handled. You see guys in other professional leagues making suggestive statements almost nightly, yet Avery gets suspended when others in other leagues would be only fined?

I don't understand it, but maybe that's why the NHL is NOT one of the "other leagues".

If you read through this thread it has been explained many many times why his penalty was more extreme than it would be to others...And who's to say others would only get fined for doing this? That is only a bad assumption.

It's like the three strikes your out rule, only he got about 20 strikes.

I agree with the logic, Avery has had a lot of troublesome times in the National Hockey League, but it just doesn't sound just to practically end one's career based on comments made.

It has little to do with the comments themselves. Unlike the Todd Bertuzzis and Claude Lemieuxs of the world, Avery is openly loathed by his own teammates. It's one thing to be dirty on the ice or a tool off of it, but if you're considered a selfish prick by your teammates, you'd better have superstar-level talent to get away with it. Avery doesn't.

I think we can all agree on one thing - we all want Sean Avery's sloppy seconds.

                          I think it's even a step further.
I think there is an added level of integrity left in the NHL and while trash talking seems to be more prevalent in today's game(I'm sure it was always there in some form)......there was always a line that other instigators never crossed...ESPECIALLY to the public.
It's my belief that his team(front office as well as members) simply don't want themselves associated with this type of behavior. Kudos to them for that AND the fact that they are willing to take a hit financially to keep that integrity intact.
I'm glad that the NHL isn't yet one of the "other leagues".
