Re: The Official 2010-11 Stanley Cup Playoffs Talk Thread
Burnside is confusing. If I didn't know better, I'd say he was trolling. There are several teams he criticizes non-stop, notably the Flyers and Devils in addition to the Canucks (he picks the Devils to miss the playoffs every year). He's anti-relocation. He hates both the World Juniors and the World Championships. He doesn't believe that there should ever be outdoor games held in Canada, because they dilute the Winter Classic. He seems more hostile to Canada's role in hockey and the NHL than any other mainstream writer on the web. Especially odd since Burnside is Canadian himself.
On the other hand, his love for Pittsburgh (Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury in particular) is so over the top that I assume he's working on a Penguins book. He insisted that MAF should be Canada's starter for the Olympics. During last year's PIT/MTL series, he penned a long article about MAF's Game 3 shutout that even Pens fans must have found ridiculous. Burnside's take on Fleury's 18-save performance: "Quite simply, this is what defines greatness." 18 saves? Really? Needless to say, there was no follow-up article on Fleury's Game 7 stinkbomb a week later. He's an odd duck.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Tongue in cheek, mon ami. The hockey sub-forum is by far the most rational and civil at OS, in my opinion. I mean, this is Charlie Rose compared to the Jerry Springer antics over at some of the other sub-forums...been to the Pro Basketball forums lately? I prefer my discourse civil and logical, or at a minimum one of the two...Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. They're still far better than most. If I were made internet king for a day, I'd get rid of the comments sections for all sports, news, entertainment, or gaming articles. I enjoy moderated forums and chats, but comments sections should just die. 99% of people who actually leave comments on ESPN, TSN, CNN, IGN, etc. are either 14-year-olds, mental midgets, irrational fanboys, hate-spewing bigots, sociopaths, or all of the above.
Burnside is a douche...I sometimes wonder if that guy is watching the same games I am. I know he's a bit cheesy, but I like Melrose (loathe though I am to credit anything ESPN-related when it comes to hockey). I thought Barney was okay, but we might not see him on the air for a while...Comment

#3 Boston vs #5 Tampa Bay
I really want the Bruins to win this series. The B's haven't won since before I was born (and that's saying something), and the atmosphere/storylines surrounding a BOS/VAN or BOS/SJ Stanley Cup Final would be fantastic.
That said, the Lightning appear to be in an awfully sweet position. Good mix of young and veteran talent, championship experience, sharp coaching, goaltending and special teams both clicking. Best of all, no expectations, no baggage, no external pressure. The very things that make them an uncompelling story (to me) give them a big advantage.
The Bruins, on the other hand, are missing one of the best 2-way forwards in hockey and have a millstone wearing #12 on their blueline. In order to win, the B's need to play very physical, achieve a draw in the PP/PK department, and hopefully crack Roloson. All possible. But I don't see it.

#1 Vancouver vs #2 San Jose
Should be an entertaining series, but no outcome here would surprise me. Canucks sweep, Sharks sweep, blown leads galore, OT in Game 7. Will the Sharks run out of gas? Will the Sedins step up? Will Heatley & Marleau? Who'll win the Kesler/Thornton battle? Which Jekyll-or-Hyde version of Luongo and Niemi shows up each game? Who knows?
I like the Canucks' D a bit more, but I think the Sharks have more offensive depth, especially at centre. Malhotra's absence will be felt in this series. The Sedins AND Luongo have to significantly raise their level of play to win. Wouldn't surprise me, though. Hmmm. It's a coinflip, but I'm predicting the Canucks to accomplish something they never have before: lose in a Conference Final.

Lightning and Canucks both in 6. Obviously these series' could go either way as the talent is solid across the board.
I believe Vancouver is the real deal - best team in the NHL and rightfully so. The Lightning have just swept a VERY talented team in the Caps, and I think they are being underestimated.STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS
