Actually, there are more Americans in the NHL today (both percentage-wise and sheer numbers) than ever before.

I can't wait for the Hawks/Nucks game tomorrow. There's just something about historic collapses that I love watching. The Wild gave you the spot, Hawks. Use it!

Well, that and the Canucks have no history and no championships. Not to mention that there are no Red Sox, Celtics, or Patriots to ease the suffering or deflect the attention here. As awful as it was, I doubt the Bruins' collapse was the main topic among the Boston fans, media, or sports radio in July, August, and September.

I said this earlier in the thread: imagine what Red Sox fans would've felt like if the 2004 ALCS was reversed, and after decades of misery, failure, and heartbreak, the Sox had been up 3-0 against the Yankees and blown that series? Those are the stakes involved here.

They really should just announce 2 finalists to join Lidstrom until he retires.

              Excuse my ignorance.

I know we've seen an influx of them of them recently. Kane & JVR were two of the top 3 picks in the what, 08 draft? And both American. But I did not know there were so many now. It must just be because I watch the Flyers... only two American regulars (JVR & Boucher).
              NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
              NFL - Buffalo Bills
              MLB - Cincinnati Reds

This is a nice site. I'm probably gonna spend an hour or two clicking on all the maps they have there.

I've been looking for stats (with no success) as to where a player played right before signing (Juniors, College, Canadian Juniors, European League etc.). It just seems like there's a whole lot more players with college ties these days. It would be interesting to see the numbers. Have you seen anything like that?

EDIT: Hm, according to this from December, about 28% played college at some point. That's higher than I thought.

I think it's because there isn't quite the American star power of the 90s (LaFontaine, Leetch, Modano, Chelios, et al). A lot of young guys and 3rd/4th liners right now. Team USA should have an impressive 2014 roster.

That's what I was thinking, too. I did the math and there are 720 starting positions (16 forwards, 6 defensemen, 2 goalies = 24 x 30 teams = 720) in the NHL. There are more then 720 listed in that link, so I was figuring A) there are a lot of tweeners and B) there aren't many stars.

Just thinking back to the Olympics now and Kane, Parise, and Miller are the only ones that really jump out. The rest are really good players but nothing like what a Team Canada or even Russia had, as far as top notch players. But top to bottom, scrappy, deep team.

And I see the Lightning lead the Penguins by 1 after 2 periods. Keep it up, Tampa Bay!
