Re: NHL Off-Topic thread
Brian Burke wants larger rinks.
I think he's being short-sighted on two accounts:
1. They should expand to 100 feet right away. 10 years from now, the players will be even bigger and faster and that extra 5' won't do any good.
2. It'll make the game safer, but I don't think it'll create more offense. Not a lot anyway.
Not when every goal is scored from 4' in the crease.
You could play on a lake, and you still need to get bodies in the crease and screened
shots from the point in order to produce a goal.
But I like where his well-quaffed head is at.
If that dinosaur is thinking outside the box, then maybe there's hope for more changes to help open-up the game.Comment

Re: NHL Off-Topic thread
Don't know if changing ice size will be so good. It means removing rows of seats, which means less money for teams.
They really need to just change goalie equipment. Enough of this turtle shell type of look. Society today has such good technology, that so many things are smaller and stronger. Don't get why same can't happen for goalie equipment.

Re: NHL Off-Topic thread
Went to the Marlies game earlier (beat Syracuse 5-4 in OT).
Was excited to see Drouin play... then found out he's been suspended indefinitely for failing to show up to an AHL game.
Then I realized TJ Brennan, Marlies defenseman and AHL all star, leads the AHL in points. Why not vote him an NHL All-Star team captain? He's clearly better than 25% of the captains this year.
Then Victor Loov scored his first goal of the year.
Fun night.Comment

Re: NHL Off-Topic thread
I wonder how much his trade value tanked. I don't usually agree with reddit, but it would be kind of funny to see how long he gets suspended for. At this point, I'm not sure why anyone in the NHL would deal with this agent.

Re: NHL Off-Topic thread
He should just shut-up and play.
It sounds like his agent is clearly driving this bus. But at some point, Drouin needs to take ownership of his career. If he's not happy sitting out and becoming the black sheep of the NHL, then he needs to fire Walsh and start repairing his career.Comment

The NHL doesn't have any choice but to go to a bigger ice surface, and I feel the sooner the better...
The game is just too fast now, and the players are too big.
"It's like a pinball game out there. You'd see a lot better hockey on a bigger rink, and the fans would enjoy it more. There would be more of the skill-control game. Players are getting hurt too often on the small ice surface."
Mark Messier.
When did he say it?
1987.
Mess could already see the direction the league was going in.
By 1995 the league began a downward spiral into defensive systems, low-scoring games, and dangerous hits.
I've said this ad naseaum, but why on earth won't the NHL use the freakin' preseason to experiment with some of these changes?
There are plenty of ice surfaces in North America that are anywhere between 200x90 and 200x100.
Why not put on a few exhibition games to see how the game translates?Comment

Judge orders unsealing of NHL executive’s emails
LOL, this is going to be good.
The public will see what kind of morons are running the league.
I wonder how long before Collie resigns.Comment

Re: NHL Off-Topic thread
Expanding the ice surface I find to be way bigger of a problem then making the nets bigger or the pads smaller. And it'll cut in to teams profits when they have to remove seats and change up the rinks. Let's not act like money isn't the driving factor behind... well, everything.
(Though it's interesting that the NHL refuses to make significant changes and continues to see their popularity decline or plateau because of the overly defensive nature of the game. Money drives everything, but that doesn't mean the driver is smart. LOL.)
They see what the game looks like on expanded ice during the Olympics and probably in foreign leagues. I know the Olympics and World Championship tourneys aren't as physical or NHL teams probably don't have as deep of rosters, but there's plenty of examples. It would be a good idea but there's other ideas that are easier (seemingly) to implement before doing that.
Please just make the nets bigger. I don't see what's so damn hard about it. Goalies will cry, but that's just what they do. Either smaller equipment or bigger nets, take your pick. What are you gonna do, boycott? They're replaceable! And we know when they aren't working, the tunes changes eventually.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: NHL Off-Topic thread
lol NHL, being run like old people trying to be hip.
Why not have a celebrity game or something instead. NBA celeb game isn't good, but at least it's better than if we were to see Kevin Hart,Drake and some other actors/musicians coaching Kobe,Lebron and so on.
Plus side at least, don't think the Canadian coverage will be interviewing these celebrities. NBC coverage might though, so you might be forced to hear a mic on these guys the whole time.Comment
