True, although the Rangers and Red Wings were in the same division (that used divisional playoffs) through 1974.

Rangers/Leafs is another Original 6 matchup that hasn't happened for 50+ years (1971).

Off topic, but it's remarkable how much John Kelly sounds like his dad.

        <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Frtft0LUMiE?si=a_QBqo1Vg7lduX9_" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And yes, considering the star power and quality of the games, the 1987 Canada Cup was the greatest hockey ever played. Canada would often roll out this power play unit:

        Wayne Gretzky (age 26)
        Mark Messier (age 26)
        Mario Lemieux (age 21)
        Ray Bourque (age 26)
        Paul Coffey (age 26)

Those five are currently 1st, 3rd, 8th, 11th, and 15th on the all-time scoring list.
At the time the last of them (Messier) retired in 2004, they were 1st, 2nd, 6th, 9th, and 10th.

Mike Liut! For my money, the coolest looking goalie of the early 80s. Iconic, intimidating white mask that popped against those clean Blues jerseys (until St. Louis ruined their look in 1984, first by adding a huge "BLUES" wordmark, then adding red trim). It also helped that Liut looked like a giant, as he was 6'2" and the average goalie back then seemed to be 5'7".

Mike Liut of the St. Louis Blues defends his goal against the New York Rangers during an NHL Hockey game circa 1981 at Madison Square Garden in the Manhattan borough of New York City. Liut playing...

Going back to my Canada Cup Friday night tangent, Mike Liut was Canada's starting goalie for the 1981 tournament, and got blown up (as Cujo did in 1996 and 1998), allowing 8 goals on 26 shots to the USSR in the CC Final. 20-year-old Gretzky centered a line of Gilbert Perreault (!) and Guy Lafleur (!!)

It scares me that this series started (lol) 13 years ago. Feels like yesterday.

And HNIC interviews Marchand basically just to talk about something from 13 years ago. Even I find that ridiculous he has to come on air and talk about that. Sure, he's one of (if not the only) guys left from either team but still.

Patrick Kane getting the OT winner for Detroit @Chicago was great

(pregame he got celebrated for like 3 laps of ovation)

fans gave him another ovation anyway, classy

                          Can't script this.

Last time Leafs beat Coyotes at home in regulation was October 17 2002.

Who scores the first goal for the Leafs tonight? Matthew Knies, born in Phoenix on October 17 2002.

Jack Johnson assisting on a Zach Parise goal, it's like watching 2010 Team USA.

Holy **** that USA/Canada gold medal game was 14 years ago

Flames honouring Kiprusoff tomorrow (although like I always say, I like it more when teams do this when the opponent means something to the player too. Sharks in this instance would be better than Pens).

What a crazy turn of events in his career. 5th round pick in 95 (funny enough, same draft as Iginla), didn't debut in the NHL until 2000, got traded as a 27 year old backup for a 2nd round pick, and obviously went on to have a great career in Calgary, one of the leagues best goalies in the mid to late 00s.

And even though Sharks gave up Kipper for just a 2nd, that 2nd round pick turned out to be Vlasic who is still with them to this day. A trade tree that still exists 20+ years later without anyone being traded since that deal.
