What a crazy turn of events in his career. 5th round pick in 95 (funny enough, same draft as Iginla), didn't debut in the NHL until 2000, got traded as a 27 year old backup for a 2nd round pick, and obviously went on to have a great career in Calgary, one of the leagues best goalies in the mid to late 00s.

And even though Sharks gave up Kipper for just a 2nd, that 2nd round pick turned out to be Vlasic who is still with them to this day. A trade tree that still exists 20+ years later without anyone being traded since that deal.

Wow, that’s pretty incredible in this day and age. Sharks were okay having Nabokov. I really liked those early 2000s Sharks teams, used them on NHL 2K2 so seeing the success of the backup in real life on Calgary a year or two later was cool. Damn shame that Flames team (and those Sharks teams) didn’t bring one home.

The 04 Flames team is one of my faves to watch. That playoff run was special.

Sharks didn't exactly pick a bad goalie to keep either, they just had to get rid of one and it makes more sense to keep the proven starter who won the calder and has 2 seasons finishing top 4 in Vezina voting.

It's a tough spot to be in and sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't.

Habs had to choose between Price and Halak, and luckily kept the better guy.

Pens chose between Murray and Fleury and chose the wrong guy (definitely did make sense at the time though)

Nah, I think the Canucks would have to make at least the West Final before I'd start getting my hopes up. Even if it ends with a massive slump and a 1st round exit, this season has been a fun surprise, and I'm grateful for it.

The Sharks picking Nabokov in the 9th round in 1994 and Kiprusoff in the 5th round in 1995 were some pretty amazing hits.

Leafs game ran into technical issues and there's no commentary for a few minutes.

That was actually a cool way to watch the game. The game audio was working. Why don't they give people this option? Watching a game with just game sounds is cool.

Too bad there's no goals, would be cool hearing a goal with no commentary.

If the Leafs do this it's a suspension.

Other team does it, it's not even a penalty.

                    Detroit disagrees!

so, before i clicked submit, I researched a little... I had no idea the Wings drafted Lidstrom, Federov, and Konstantinov IN THE SAME DRAFT

Also, Mike Sillinger, Bob Boughner, and Dallas Drake. Is that the best draft class ever? And apparently would've had Pavel Bure over Dallas Drake if not for an eligibility dispute. That's crazy

Not that fans knew the rule either, but someone did digging and seems the refs messed up and almost cost the Leafs the game yesterday (big surprise).

The rangers near the end of OT intentionally got a too many men penalty to break up what would've been a last ditch fast break by the Leafs with Marner and Matthews about to go 2 on 1 in the Rangers end. But since they sent out an extra guy to break it up, it was too many men.

NHL rules state if a team does that (deliberately and/or doing so late in a game/OT where a team can't serve the full penalty due to time remaining in the game) the team is awarded a penalty shot (rather than a 7 second PP like the Leafs got).

This reminds me of a time years ago where someone intentionally got a penalty when the Leafs would've scored on an empty net and rather than award the Leafs the goal (since penalty shot plays when there's an empty net just results in a goal since you can't take a penalty shot on an empty net, although that'd be funny to watch), refs just called a penalty instead.

I didn't mean teams didn't draft them, but how many of these guys were late picks. If teams scouted them properly they would've gone much earlier.

McDavid currently on pace for 105 assists.

Players with 100+ assists in a season: Gretzky 11 times, Mario once, Orr once.

When I saw he had more points than HOF’ers already and I looked it up, it really sunk in. I mean, production wise he’s outpacing greats of this past era in Crosby & Ovechkin.

I’m still so used to 100 points being a holy grail that we were conditioned to believe because nobody was scoring like that. Things have seemed to loosen up as far as points totals go, but he’s still head and shoulders above. And bringing his teammates along for the ride with him to the top of the scoring charts.

It’s very cool to witness and understand greatness as it’s unfolding before your eyes.

For some reason last week I thought that the deadline was the 6th.

Now suddenly it feels like it today too.

Panthers get Tarasenko for basically nothing while Sens retain 50% and Oilers get Henrique.

So about this time 2 seasons ago, I suggested that the Canucks try to get Bowen Byram from the Avs for JT Miller (who at the time had 73 points, would finish with 99, and had a full season remaining at 5.25M), and Kobalt assured me that Byram was untouchable. Today, Byram was dealt straight-up for Casey Mittelstadt, an RFA with 47 points. What's changed? Has Byram lost his shiny prospect status? Are the Avs planning to sign Mittelstadt long-term?

He’s been terrible mainly because whether it’s concussion or Jack Johnson. He unfortunately peaked during the SC finals when he was the best DMan on the team. He needed a change of scenery.

When Toews was re-signed, they had a logjam at LD which meant Girard (who also hasn’t been as good and has a bigger contract) or Byram was gonna be dealt.

Avs filled their biggest hole on the roster while dealing from their “strength.” Also got rid of RyJo, hell of a day from MacFarland.
