I need some recommendations, I need a driver. What's a good one for a post beginner, pre decent player?

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Ping G15 isn't bad, nor is the TaylorMade Burner. Both are fairly forgiving.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
thanks.
Par 71 course so I was +7 but I'll take it. Shot 38 on the front nine and 40 on the back. Had a good round going on the back until I shot an 8 on the Par 5, 16th. I put my tee shot into the water on the right and then my approach into the face of a bunker. Long hole. But rallied back with a birdie, par finish.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Honestly...anything. Buy used for sure, and just make sure you like the size of the head and it's the right flex shaft. I'm a good player and have never used a driver less than 10 years old.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Seems like you would have been better off upgrading your driver or putting that towards a new set of irons. They aren't even legal in USGA play. Takes away some of the fun and feeling of success that you judged it right imo.
But either way, there is a great iphone app that will take your GPS location and tell you how far from the pin you are(I assume middle of the green) for A LOT of courses. Pretty cool app.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
One of the best things to do is find a golf only shop that sells used and new clubs with a demo range. That's what I did. That way you can take a bunch of clubs to the range and try them out and find one that works for you.I dont remember there names but they were allot of fun....Comment

In any case until I'm playing for $ on tour there's no harm. I have the Golf Logix on Iphone (well when I get my new Iphone) and I own a Sonocaddie GPS.Joshua:

Ehh, I bought Ping G10's last year and have a Burner driver and 3 wood, VR Wedges and a Method putter, don't need new clubs. USGA regulations are for tournament players not me, and many pros on tour use range finders in their practice rounds to map out all the yardages over the course they will be playing. (I've watched Tiger and Anthony Kim use them at Congressional the last two years in their practice rounds.) If you ever see a PGA players yardage book it has yardages to everything, laid out for them. Many use rangefinders over GPS because while knowing that the center of the green is 150 yards away they want to know how far to the pin in the back left exactly.Moderator

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Mehh I'm not a fan of range finders either....Tiger wants to know that its 171 to the pin because he can hit it 171 on command. Us humans just need to know +/- 5 yards which is easily done by finding a yard marker and checking out the pin position on the green and doing an estimate of yards from center. I just don't see it improving anyone's game at all. But people can do what they want with their money.Comment

To each their own though but in 2010 it's really no big deal...Joshua:

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Um range finders are legal I thought. I played in 2 Club Championships the last two years, and we were allowed to use them in play. The only stipulation is that it does not show the wind direction/speed. That's it.
I myself have had the SKyCaddie 1 (the very first) - and it has been the reason why my hcp has dropped significantly.
It's not about what the exact yardage you can hit - it's about what is around the green, or in the fairway. Say you can only drive 200 yards, and the end of the fairway is 210 yards. What do you do? Exactly, range finders tell you where the problems are.
Course management is the number 1 to lowering your handicap - we all know this, some of us just have the thought of "management" in reference to their Short game (putting, chipping) and Long game (iron approach, driving) - when instead, it's where not to land the ball, and how your next shot is set up.
I'm itching to go out today - but it's 70 degrees with a 90% chance of rainComment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I just shot my best round ever last week. Probably helped that I did not drink while I was there. Shot a 4 over par on the front nine. Then it went downhill on the back nine. Still shot an 88. Next goal to break 85.Texas A&M Aggies
