why i like EA golf better, because the course creator is much more advanced the courses feel completely different.

That's the one angle where Perfect Golf excels also. The course creator is infinitely flexible, but at the cost of complexity and learning curve for the designers.

On the end user side you end up with far less courses, but usually more interesting, varied and visually distinct offerings however.

(PG, of course, is a visually pretty dated experience overall .. and very incomplete golf game)

When you see how good the pitch looks in the latest FIFA previews...

Wow ... it gets one pretty excited for how PGA 23 and NCAA FB 23 could both look!

Also, Even the TPC and Tour courses all feel like thee devs used course creator to make them, where as in Rory 15, they feel scanned and lifelike.

really when you go back and play Rory, it's better than it got credit for just didn't have enough content and options.

I believe with EA PGA 23 , we will be finally getting “the complete game”.

The graphics in Rory were awesome - visually striking and a nice, bright, eye-catching color palette. It was a great game visually, which is really important - especially in golf, where the aesthetics of a course are a huge part of the sport itself.

The problem was that the game was thinner than a single-ply piece of toilet paper. You could literally play an entire round - decently! - without ever looking at the screen. Pull the right stick back, push it up, wait a few seconds, then repeat. You could play a 'season', but it was pretty bare-bones and there wasn't a whole lot of incentive to continue past 1 season. And there were just so many glitches that it made the experience pretty unsatisfying.

Glad we're all hopeful, but at the risk of beating a dead horse, I'll caution that nobody ever went broke short-selling EA's final delivered product being significantly diminished from the promising previews. EA's hype train is second-to-none in the industry, and their ability to under-deliver is also second-to-none. I've spent the past 2.5 decades seeing EA's promises in all sorts of games go up in smoke when the final product is in my hands and I'm sorely disappointed.

It is now roughly 4 months past the original launch window and we have yet to see even one image from this game.

I was so excited for this game when they made the announcement at The Masters in 2021. Now I am becoming skeptical if it will even release.

There was a recent Instagram post from one of the commentators in EA's game recording lines for it, so production and development is on-going. It will come out...at some point.

setting the swing difficulty setting to hard makes it very hard to hit straight, you need to make a custom gameplay style. The tour gameplay setting that is done by EA is to easy to hit straight shots. Lots of people probably never noticed this.

Yes, completely understood and I did mess around with the swing settings (pretty extensively, to the extent that it would allow). I think for me, someone needs to re-think the swing mechanism in a golf video game completely from the ground up. We've had some pretty good discussions in the forums previously about what that might look like, and there are plenty of ideas, but the common theme in all the suggestions/arguments is that pulling the thumbstick down and then up is just not all that compelling in the long-term as a core gameplay loop. With all the talent at EA or elsewhere, someone has to be able to come up with something more fun/skill-based than that.

I realize this is not just a "Rory" problem, but I think the implementation of it in the game was particularly uninteresting, primarily because the timing of the green 'bubble' filling up never really changed, as every shot was essentially designed around a full swing. So it became kind of like dial-a-yardage pretty quickly (If I'm recalling this game correctly...it's been a while).

That's why EA tried the diagonal swing for their sim mode, and just about everybody hated it. I think the tempo for dispersion is here to stay, EA started it with Rory and HB took the ball and ran with it.

Good post - I'm with you

The whole golf swing concept could use some new life, especially on controllers.

On Perfect Golf, I'm totally in love with the mouse motion swing (RTS-M) as it very nicely combines swing path as well as a tempo component..with unlimited freedom of movement (since a Mouse is obviously untethered).

Mouse swings are unique in that you can really have a lot of challenge with the unrestrained swing path, swing distance (that the mouse travels), etc

I think it's a harder challenge for the designers to implement something on the controller analog sticks that are anchored in. Obviously there has to be a good way...

And a way that a lot of gamers will want to use it, if not it's going to go away like the diagonal swing and other stuff that were not used. The Legend mode that all the sims guys wanted at HB, it doesn't seem to be used a lot. It wouldn't surprise me it's going to be a lot easier in the next game.

TW 2003 the slower swing speed i think is important, it just works better for partial shots.
I agree that getting away from the dial a distance is needed.
Just wonder if we even need some of these baked in shot stances on the square button.

I'm going to be borderline irate if EA does the dial a distance thing again.

Basing all the gameplay around full power and just "put the arrow where you want" is a huge mistake

It's completely antithetical to golf and how one should think about it and approach the gameplay of the sport.

I really hope they don't make that mistake, particularly with an "all new swing".
