Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
3 negatives i'm reading from other forums (though overall very positive responses):
-no bumps in the road. hopefully something taken out for faster download.
-engine sounds flat at high rpms (again hopefully sacrificed for demo size)
-VTV hard to read compared to '08
Really like the lighting. Although the replays don't look shadowed correctly or something the light and shadows look great from the in car view. Also love the flapping net and how you can really hear when you get in the draft. Got some spray on the windshield at Lowes and it made driving into the glare pretty tough. Nice touch.
Glad to see someone not going all casual on us race fans. Real setups, pits with options, flags, real distances and accelerated wear. THANK YOU EA. Hope all that translates to online play as well.
Looking forward to seeing how the game handles 14 players on Live. Also can't wait to check out the car skin importing and how those look online. Being able to work on your PC blows Forza's MS Paint workshop to smithereens. Also like the own the track feature.Comment

One negative I discovered is, one groove racing, no one runs a different line(high line), unless there being passed.Comment

Yeah, I started to notice more with the AI as well. Set to 10% and x3 or x4 wear. Your tires will start to go and as you slow and try to keep a good line the AI will still be flying and able to move high or low on you at will. Also crashes cut away very quick and nobody every seems to get much real damage from them. I have not seen anyone DNF in the races I have run. Black flags seem to come out way to easy as well. Here is hoping online is solid.Comment

Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
I tried it on Legend with a controller and a wheel, and came away very impressed with the handling model. Moreso than most other console games, strangely. The AI cars are on "easy" no matter what you set it to, as you can run them down without any effort at all. The lap times they're turning when set to Legend aren't even close to competitive, so I wouldn't worry too much about being easy on the "real" difficulty settings.
With that said, I like being able to kick the car out a bit. The real Sprint Cup teams are going more and more to a splined rear end, so you have the axles in a sort of ball joint in the rear end...what you see when you watch a race is the car look ****-eyed, almost like it's constantly sliding. The car twists, but the wheels stay straight because the rear end is "pivoting". It's hard to explain, but if you watch a race, you can see the front tire on the apron and the rear tire about 8 inches higher on every car. They're not sliding the whole time, but the car is literally slanted.
Somehow, this demo models that. I had a very good feel with both the controller on the default setting and the wheel on 85 linearity. So much so that I really started pushing it on the default Veteran setup (have to load that up separate or you're stuck with the easy setup) around Lowe's. I fully believed the handling model, because it felt exactly as I'd heard the CoT's described--easy to drive a looser race car, and the rear wing "catches" a lot of mistakes. I dropped the hammer in Junior's car and really started ripping off some nice-feeling laps. Felt like I was on the edge of traction all the time. I went to watch a replay, and sure as hell, the car has the splined-rear-end look to it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, but it sure was pretty cool.
The AI didn't cornhole me every corner, but still exhibited some questionable ability to drive it a bit deeper into a corner and "stick it". Remains to be seen if it's just tweaked code from the almost unraceable AI in 08 or if they really did anything about it.
I dig the "Caution Replay" cams. Make a screw up, instantly relive it.
I also dig the auto pit. I'm finding that I have little patience for pitting over and over in my old age and just want to make the decisions under yellow and not deal with driving 3 or 4 laps at freeway speed. I know past games have had it, but I still like it. I just couldn't play much of the past games for longer than a few days.
Cockpit cam with the R-stick as a look function...and the D-Pad on the wheel serving the same purpose. Thank God! I hate the D-Pad being used as steering on a bloody steering wheel, and having no look function. Now the D-Pad serves exactly like the R-stick does, with "snap" controls. Quick look left, right, and behind...or up at the mirror.
I could bang off of cars quite a bit without giving the "insta crunch" front bumper like last year.
I could also drive into a wall at 180 and keep driving...hopefully a demo thing, but I'm not too optimistic.
I have no idea what this means for the final product...whether it's a keeper or not, but it went from an eye-rolling snooze fest for me to a day 1 purchase in the span of about an hour. Even if some huge glaring warts appear, I've been itching for a decent driving model and the current Sprint Cup rules. The driving model caught me by surprise, and if the AI is even somewhat competent, I can see having some good fun with the retail.Comment

Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
All I can say is "WOW!" Wow for two things:
"WOW" because I suck at these games. I love them, but I suck!I'll have to stay offline, lest I incur the wrath of everyone I run over online!
and "WOW" because that demo was great. First of all, it was prehaps the most in-depth demo I've played. This is how demos should be done - just enough to entice the casual fan to buy the game. Secondly, the demo for this game feels so much better than the 08 version. I'm a casual NASCAR fan, but it sounds like a few of you die-hard fans like the game. That's good enough for me. Tells me that I wasn't too far off in figuring out that this looks like it could be a very good game.Comment

Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
UM
yeah....
This game does what NHL 08 did for EA.
restore faith in the company.
If the full version is as detailed and as varied as the demo. meaning(track design etc)this might be the best console NASCAR game to hit the market in years. Playing it in 720p is absolutely cool.
There is dynamic lighting(GREAT looking) i can only hope there will be cloudy days to play in as an option...
This game compared to last years JUST graphically and presentationwise is a HUGE leap. it runs at a great framerat and it look so much better than last years that its not funny
KUDO's EA. here to hoping the final product is as impressive CUZ darnit this was one amazing demo!Brand New Tomba Slider sets ready for Next Gen Versions of NBA,Madden and Fifa Stay Tuned...Comment

Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
This demo seems ok. But until they can bring full race replays to this Nascar game, no one will ever be able to convince me that this is not Nascar Revolution rehashed. Nascar Revolution WAS a revolution when it was released back in the day. But it had a limitation where it could only give us just a few moments in a race replay. EA tried to package this limitation with a hilite real, but it still wasn't enough, imo. Now we are at '09 and the "limitation" is still there. When Nascar 09 is released, it may turn out to be a pretty good game. But if it still has the replay limitation, I am going to have pass... again.
Oh where, oh where are you Papyrus?!!!

Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
You're comparing this to the atrocious Nascar Revolution...because of the replays? In the demo? I haven't seen where they said that the replays would be limited...but it makes sense in a demo. I just don't know what to say. To each his own, I guess. To lump what I played last night in with Nascar Revolution is pretty crazy imo.Comment

Anyways, I was happy yesterday after seeing the first few impressions posts and now seeing someone of your reputation when it comes to racing games make such positive comments makes me even more optimistic. Hopefully the AI is at least serviceable and this turns out to be a fun game. I wish the PS3 demo was out already but it seems it will only be out in a week.Comment

Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
I loved the demo one thing that got me was when your spin it, the tires seem to keep squealing longer than they should. I was literally rolling backwards at 30 mph and had it in neutral and they were still squealing, but other than that it was great.Comment

Re: NASCAR 09 Demo May 29
I'm going to hold off on this one.
I'm more of an online guy and everyone on my friends list have pretty much switched over to the PS3.
Here are two pretty alarming things I've noticed...- Also, it looks like the AI going "extreme slow downs" into pit road hasn't been fixed. (The AI cars slow down to a near complete stop to enter pit road.)
- During cautions at Daytona, my car kept slamming into the wall. The CPU was controlling my car to shake off the marbles but by the restart, I had a badly damaged car!
