So, yeah, man, iRacing is like so clean and all that...

The final lap from tonight's NiS Open Race at Pocono. A green-checkered, so you know there's going to be carnage.

      Re: iRacing after 2+ years

Decided that with Project Cars being out now, and the fact I am going to get a wheel again soon, I got 3 months of iRacing as well for $15. Did my first race last night on Charlotte and finished 7th. I'll take that with a PS4 controller. Once I get a wheel I can imagine all races will feel a lot better.

I already like the community in this game from my initial impression and I have to say oval racing is a lot more fun that I thought it'd be. I might be spending more time there than I imagined. Once I get my wheel and start purchasing more content, I really want to go with Bristol Motor Speedway since I live right beside it. I've driven on there plenty of times in real life, albeit not over 60 mph, so I want to feel it in the game competitively.

Between this and PCars, I finally have that racing void filled again in my life. And with all the promotions I've seen around iRacing and how people end up really only paying $1 a year for it if you race consistently, I can see myself playing both games for a loooong time.

        Re: iRacing after 2+ years

So I got this game with the intentions of circuit racing. I still haven't touched it. Ovals are too much fun. Charlotte is a bit simple as a rookie right now as it's pedal to the floor and be safe and you'll finish high.

I feel like I could be out of rookie already, but I seem to have 4 incidents at least a race from very minimal contact and I am guessing that is keeping my SR down. Just last race, all was well until the guy I am drafting 2 inches behind starts spinning and I clip part of him as he is turning around. Ended the race with 4 incidents even though that was the only contact I made all race with anyone and I never touched grass.'

Still, in rookie, I am having a blast. I had always been hesitant to try iRacing out, but man, I am so glad I finally bit on it. I never knew I'd like oval racing so much either, but I guess it must be just a part of me living my entire life 2 miles from Bristol Motor Speedway.

Yeah, I thought Rookie Street Stocks were fun, especially at USA Speedway. Yeah, there's a lot of wrecks, but wreck avoidance is good to learn.

Anyone doing the Coca-Cola 600 this week? I think I might try for the open on Wednesday evening if I can try to throw together a set. If not, I'll either race in the Fixed Saturday or Sunday. I raced the Thursday night fixed race last year and nearly won it (had a 15-second lead with 50 laps to go or so), but a late-race caution bunched the remaining cars back together and I let the race get away from me and finished 3rd. That was frustrating. I'm sure I'll likely be in top split this year, so I've got no chance at winning against the really good/pro drivers.

            Re: iRacing after 2+ years

I think I'm finally gonna bite the bullet and get a new PC and wheel for iracing. I'm getting sick of throwing money at console games hoping it'll fill my void and of course it never does.

However I have a couple questions. I'm gonna try my hand at building my own pc. Never have done it and have always wanted to. I'm wondering if someone could tell me if this a decent barebones kit? http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...=Combo.2291806 I also have a GeForce GT 610 1GB video card I'd be putting in it. Wasn't sure if that's enough of a video card or if I'm better trying to find a bundle with a video card already in it? Only thing I need it for is editing photography pics, which the 8gb ram should do that fine and should be able to upgrade to 16 if wanted to. The only game I plan on playing right now is iRacing but also want the PC to be somewhat future proof incase I decide to do more.

2nd question, can anybody recommend a budget steering wheel? Really want the G27 but with having to buy a PC as well, not sure I can find the funds for it. Someone recommend the Logitech Drive Force, can anybody else recommend that one? Looks to have stick shift, which I'd prefer over the paddles. Or is something else better for the money?

            Thanks in Advance,
            Jeffrey

              Re: iRacing after 2+ years

              Jeffrey,
You will want to go with a PC that has a separate CPU / GPU. The one you listed is an integrated combo.

Keep in mind, you'll get better mileage out of a PC with a mid-range/top notch CPU and GPU. Also, if you can afford it, go with a solid state hard drive. (They're faster and in some cases more reliable.)

Also, don't skimp on the power supply or fan. Power and cooling become critically important as you continue to upgrade your PC.

Lastly, be ready to invest time and money since from here on out...

The downsides of of PC gaming: you will constantly worry about how many FPS you're getting, question if you have enough memory (and speed) and maintaining the OS, security, GPU, and software updates.

              -------

              All that aside.

I strongly recommend Game Stock Car (Brazilian racing) for offline AI racing and iRacing for online competitive racing.

P-Cars should also be fun on PC but I can't speak to how well it runs on the PC.

              Good luck, man.

the logitech dfgt is a good entry level wheel but its downside is the pedals it comes with are really cheap. the g27 is a better wheel and comes with much better pedals which can easily be modded.(but is more expensive).

also if your a member on the iracing forums ? you can check the hardware section and get pretty solid pc's built from members either used or new for very cheap.

I believe I have to be a member to access iracing forums. But I'll check out rest of information posted.

Think I'm gonna start with the Driving Force Pro, try to spend more money on the PC and make sure I like iracing then if I do upgrade to a G27. Can find the DFP for $40-$50 used locally.

One other quick question, how much does the service actually cost per year? According to website regular price is $12 1-month, $30 3 months, $99 for a year and $179 for two. I'm just wondering if I don't get signed up soon, depending how soon I can get me a new pc, if I'm gonna lose out on a great discount or if most the time, there is some kind of sale going on.

The Driving Force GT has a sequential stick, not an H-pattern stick. In addition, it does not have a clutch. The pedals are plastic and not necessarily the greatest, but the wheel is pretty good and I got good use out of it.

I got a G27 a couple years ago and love it, though, but I would recommend either.

You can get a lot more expensive wheels than the G27 which are evidently better (load cell brakes and such), but I haven't ever tried any of them.

The Black Friday sale will have it at $49/year and sometimes they have it on sale at other times of the year, too.

The reality, though, is that iRacing is really, really expensive. I love it and consider it worth the investment personally, but not everyone will agree. You really have to enjoy it to make it worth the money as you'll end up pouring in $500-1000 into the service before you know it between subscription fees, tracks, cars, etc. However, by its nature it does offer the best pick-up online racing of any game I have played. No game can really compete with it there.

You can play it for fairly cheap if you stick to the rookie classes, but the races aren't always as great down there and using the same car and the same rotating tracks might get kind of old.

Are you looking at getting more into oval or road racing, or both?

If you do join, here's my profile: http://members.iracing.com/membersit...?custid=125451 Feel free to add me as a friend or ask any questions. Manny and a lot of others on here play iRacing, as well. I generally stick to the long NiS oval races these days, though I have jumped back down into late models some more lately. I'm trying to really learn how to make setups better after generally sticking to fixed racing for my first couple years.

27+ hours in and I love this game, but man, I just sat around for 45 minutes waiting on the race that should take me out of rookie road as long as I completed it only to have a bunch of idiots cause a pile up on turn one of lap one that I was unable to avoid. My car was torn up badly and I was too tired and irritated to even try to finish the race.

Hate to disconnect and leave it, but that's just frustrating to have a bunch of stubborn drivers ruin my night of racing in turn one. Guess I'll get out of rookie sometime this weekend if I don't have a chance to race tomorrow.

And if you're wondering how I have that many hours and am not out of rookie, my cousin and I have spent the majority of those hours just practicing and practicing. Had we been smart enough to do time trials, I'd probably be out of rookie already.
