    Re: Official Wii Impressions

Can it turn out to be a gimmick?
Of course it can, nothing is absolute in this world, especially in the gaming industry. The DS was also supposed to be a gimmick and look at how that has turned out.

But no matter how you feel about nintendo, you always know that you will be getting AAA titles from them, and usually that is enough for me to justify subsidizing them.

The wii will be fine, just as the gamecube was and also the n64. Not being the most dominant system has never meant that they cannot turn a profit and continue to happily chug along to the beat of their own drums. And as long as Nintendo keeps bringing out entertaining games that I enjoy, i will continue to buy into their gaming philosophy.

To me, its really that simple.

      Re: Official Wii Impressions

      I could use advice, guys.

I had been set on picking up an Xbox 360 this Christmas as my daughter (6 yrs. old) & I enjoy playing games together. We have an Xbox and she really enjoys the Star Wars games (Battlefront II, Star Wars Lego games, etc.) and she wants to play Madden, but the controls seem a bit beyond her reach. After seeing the ads for the Wii and the YouTube video, I began looking a bit harder at the Wii, predominantly because of the controllers and how immersive it seems. Also, I know that Nintendo tends to produce fun games. My daughter has mentioned wanting the Wii as well as the 360 (can't afford both).

I guess my question is mainly for the ones with both systems: Do you guys see yourselves playing the Wii more than the 360, or do you think you'll move back to playing the 360 more? Also, are the controls for the Wii easy enough for a 6 yr. old to use? I haven't owned (or played) a Nintendo gaming system since the original NES, but I used to love it. Since then, it's been a PlayStation, DreamCast, and Xbox. Might be nice to go back to one of the first that i started with.

Thanks for any and all advice that you guys offer up.

Well I don't have the Wii yet(will in a couple days) but to answer...
I will play the 360 lots more than the Wii not because of the systems but rather the games and LIVE. Especially LIVE.

As far as my daughters it will be totally opposite. They will certainly play the Wii more. So for me I need both systems as they offer 2 totally different experiences IMO.

If you're number 1 priority is playing with your daughter, then for sure get the Wii. The controls are pretty easy to get used to, some games have a steeper learning curve than others, and its a system that should have plenty of games suitable for kids and adults alike.

I agree with the guys above--for you, 360 would be the best, for her the wii. Now, since you're only getting one, you have to think of it this way: if you bought the opposite of what is better (wii being the opposite for you, and the 360 being the opposite for her) then who will be happiest? At this point I do say 360 miiiight be the best system. The reason being that its got some fun games too, but also the sports titles and LIVE. The wii, well i still dont see how they;re going to incorporate the internet into their games, and the games are much more kiddy. Sure, you will enjoy them too, for a while, but it will wear off when what you have to do is close the door on a rabbit or milk a cow. With the 360, its got a year under its built and the games that have been released, and those that are forthcoming, seem alot better than whats coming out for the wii. If 2K made sports titles for the wii, i would definately take the wii plunge because the better sports company would be backing it up. Thats the problem with nintendo, not too many 3rd party companies make games for it, so instead of playing winning eleven, you're stuck playing super mario strikers...buuuut, if you're more into arcade than sim, that might not be a bad thing.

Also, since you can only get one, the wii plus an extra controller and some games will definately be cheaper then the 360 and controller ALONE... you should definately look at that

Thanks for any and all advice that you guys offer up.
I'm in a similar situation as you. I love to game, and I have a 6 year old boy that love the Xbox and his Star Wars games. I also ahve a PSP, but no PS2/3.

I'm pretty much set on a Wii over the 360 now. I love sports games, but I'm still playing NFL 2k5, ASB 05, MVP 2005, NCAA 06, and Inside Drive on the Xbox. The only sports game on the 360 that looks like an improvement is NBA 2k7. I don't trust 2k sports to fix their baseball game this year, and if they do I think it's still coming out on the Xbox.

I can be satisfied with sports on the XBox for another year, and we'll need the old box fro the many non-BC games will still play. The Wii just looks like too much fun. Plus, it will get both of our butts up off the couch and moving while we game. It seems to be seeling very well, so I have to think the games will be there, even the ones like NCAA football and Tiger woods. Not all the Wii games will be "kiddie".

Now I just need to find one....

I don't believe so, I'm almost 100% positive you need a GC memory card to use. Since I don't have the system yet, I can't be completely sure though.

If Nintendo backs up online gaming, which I believe they will, it should be alright but probably not as good as Live. Only time will tell how good the actual service will be. The first online game will be Pokemon and I believe Super Smash Bros. will be a live game as well. EA wanted to include online gaming with Madden, but Nintendo said the service wasn't ready for launch so they had to scrap that. Admiral50 said in another thread that 2k was bringing the Biggs (arcade baseball game) to the Wii, so I'm hoping they will bring an MLB sim to the system as well. Ubisoft, SEGA, and EA seem like they're on board with the Wii too. Personally, I excited about being able to play a fleshed out boxing game with the Wii control system, it really has the potential to be a great device for sport games. Plus, the system brings gaming back to its roots where its all about having fun and gameplay and not all about the graphics, not to mention it literally goes back to its roots with the classic virtual console.

                    Re: Official Wii Impressions

It's been said before, but it still isn't sinking in for many, but sports games on the Wii are going to be awesome. The only one in doubt at this point is basketball and maybe soccer since neither sport has been attempted yet. Baseball games will be the best, I feel, either that or golf. Both translate so well. Baseball on the Wii feels like a home alternative to a batting cage when you play the hitting practice or homerun derby mini games. And pitching has been a lot more fun than I expected it would. I can't wait for a full-fledged baseball game for this machine because the possibilities are evident in Wii Sports. Golf just makes tremendous sense and Wii Sports golf is the best alternative to the real thing. They just need more courses, the ability to control spin, and a full assortment of clubs.

As for the kiddie mentality, yeah there will be plenty of all ages games, probably more for the Wii than any other console, but there will be enough adult type games to balance it out. The Wii is a great console for shooters and even though Red Steel has its problems, it shows the potential that is there. Metroid Prime is going to be nuts.

The only drawback to the Wii is in the hardware. It isn't very powerful compared to the competition and the online capabilities haven't been ironed out. The other online stuff is great (like the Virtual Console) and the fact that it's wireless ready is also a huge plus. I don't know who will lead in sales this generation, but I don't expect Nintendo to be a distant third here and in terms of profit Nintendo will likely come out on top since they aren't taking a huge loss on hardware sales. The Wii is here to stay.

Yes. It will be interesting to see if EA is able to implement the Wii remote into the gameplay of a basketball game. Personally, I have no idea how they would do it. I mean, baseball, boxing, and golf are essentially no brainers, but soccer, basketball, and maybe even hockey might have to be done with the classic controller.

                        Re: Official Wii Impressions

I have all 3 systems. Here is a complete unbiased review.

Wii is not a next gen system that will need to compete with the 360 or ps3, it is in a league of its own.

That certainly doesnt mean its better or worse than either system, its just completely different.

If I want to play a long involved single player game, fps or whatever, Ill stick to the 360...but Wii sports has made a believer out of me.

Ive never seen one game bring together so many different people in one spot.

We were running Fight Night 3 on the 360 on my screen, and Wii sports boxing on another. 2 people were playing fight night, and 2 were playing boxing. The main difference is that everyone was jumping down and cheering the Wii boxing game, and no one payed any attention to Fight Night.

Some will say the Wii cant compete graphics wise with the next gen systems and I agree, but the fun factor for the Wii is amazing at this point. My dad is 60+ years old and was playing bowling, my g/f is 22 and playing boxing as we speak.....Ive never seen 1 game appeal to so many diffferent audiences.

Big thumbs up for the Wii so far. Great party system.

I see huge potential for sports games on this system, no doubt about it.

Not impressed at all. Its price tag isnt commensurate with what I thought it would be. Just comparing launch games from the 360 to the PS3 launch games, they are worse actually. Im not trying to compare, say, Gears of War to Resistance...but Cod3 to Cod3 and RR6 to RR7. Each game on the 360 is superior to the PS3 version. With the lack of any quality titles coming out in the next 6 month - 1 year , I dont see ps3 doing to well for awhile.

If sony is going to compete this generation, they need to step up to the plate very soon, so far everyone here on campus that has a ps3 is disappointed as well. So disappointed that they tossed them up on ebay and didnt even get 900 for them.
