I probably could have looked around a little more over the next week or so and gotten a better deal for more space, but I've been putting off upgrading for a while now because of Rock Band. Now that I have other games taking time away from that game, it's a good time to upgrade. This will give me 5x the space of my 60gb, so I should be set for a couple years now

I was asking on the Rock Band forums if there was anyway to save my Rock Band data and a guy said if I do a full system back then all my data will be there, even RB. I'm not sure how to do that though. I have a 16gb flash drive, but that won't be enough for a full backup of a 60gb PS3. I do have a 500gb external HDD on my computer with a couple hundred GBs free, can that be plugged into my PS3's USB slot to back up to?

Even if I did back up my data to my computer's external drive, I still have to get the data back onto my new HDD for the PS3.

Yeah, that's why you need to do a full system back to a large USB drive. When I got a new PS3 on my previous one I did a full system backup then plugged in the USB drive to the new PS3 and did a system restore.

I was reading a tutorial on it and it says this:

The PS3 has a built-in software backup utility that can copy the PS3's hard drive contents to an external storage device, such as a USB thumb drive or a Memory Stick. The removable storage device must use the FAT32 file system in order for the PS3 to recognize it. If you have an external hard drive that's formatted in NTFS, you can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive, but you'll need to create partitions on large external hard drives because Windows can do only FAT32 on drives 32GB or smaller.
My external drive is a 500gb that I'm pretty sure is formatted in NTFS. Does that mean I need to create a partition for the PS3 backup? That article says the FAT32 partition can only be 32GB or smaller, so how do I do the full 60gb?

That is not true about the partition has to be smaller than 32GB. I just plugged in my USB drive that I used to backup my PS3 and there is one partition that is 120GB.

You should be able to create a new partition that is 60GB and format it FAT32. That should obviously be enough room for everything on the hard drive.

Cool, so it does need to be a FAT32 partition then? I'll go ahead and set that partition up on my external drive tonight so I'm ready when I get the new HDD tomorrow.

Yes it does need to be FAT32.

I'll explain everything I did once I get it all working. Then maybe it will seem easier. I sure hope so, for my sake! LOL

You do that through the Disk Management utility on your computer. You right click on My Computer, go to Storage, then there is a Disk Management item to click on. You can google it to find instructions.

I believe the PS3 partitions it itself as well from what I remember.
