Re: The On-going Battle..Xbox 360 or PS3??
Lol, incidentally, I'm surrounded by people who wanted bluray and therefor went the ps3 route. My parents, my gf's parents, my gf, two or three of my closest buddies, my brother...The reason for this is because they realize the audience that would pick up the ps3 now dont care about those features. Lower the price by taking out some of the things no one really uses more than a handful of times. Anyone buying the ps3 now most likely is a joe-sixpack who grabs it, doesnt put it on the internet(no need for wifi) and buys a few games for his kids. "Who cares about PS2 BC, i want the latest madden". I am a strong proponent of BC but even I realize that will not help Sony sell as many units; just not worth it.
I still don't know a single person near me (friends and family) that has a blue-ray player. This was not the case when dvd's began springing up. Then again i didn't know anyone near me who had an HD-dvd player. I am pretty tech saavy and like new toys and gadgets just like the next gamer, and even I don't care about BD still; i can't imagine a family member buying a ps3 just to have BLUE-RAY(or an Xbox for HD-DVD at the time). It's about the games. Most features are a novelty and a couple of months later aren't even looked at (Hello Card Readers, Linux Support)
Both Sony and MS are now catering to the non-core gamer market because everyone else(Us core gamers, the guys who go to midnight releases for our hobby) has one or the other or both in this current generation.Last edited by Guest; 08-28-2009, 08:49 AM.Comment

As far as blue-ray, I don't know what it is then. I just don't have any inclination to have BR. Hell i just recently got on the netflix bandwagon and loving it so far, but i just watch a movie and that's it. My gamer friends being on the same wavelength don't even bring it up. I have a few friends with ps3 and no BR movies. Go figure.

I go through kicks. I was on a PS3 kick for a while. Now I'm back on the 360 kick mainly because of Netflix and the XBLA games that have come out recently. Once Uncharted 2 comes out back to the PS3 for awhile.Comment

Re: The On-going Battle..Xbox 360 or PS3??
I chose the PS3 over 360 because of reliability. I bought the PS3 18 months ago and I have had not one problem with it. Before I bought it, 5 of my friends had the 360, and everyone of them got the RROD. Some of them hardly played it and still got it. Ik now its fixed for free but it is still a pain in the butt that I did not want to deal with. This is why I chose PS3 and I have not been disappointed.
Not to mention I love the Sony exclusives (LBP, Ratchet, Uncharted and the Show are some of my favorite games.) However, I did not know anything about these games before I bought the PS3; it was an added bonus!Comment

I have no interest in BR either. I'm not going about collecting more movies, since they end up collecting dust. For the amount of movies I do watch, Netflix, cable and free DVD rentals from the library are fine. I don't watch a movie to focus on the graphics resolution, so DVD and 5.1 is fine.As far as blue-ray, I don't know what it is then. I just don't have any inclination to have BR. With Blu Ray it's not just about the video though, the sound is much better than dvd.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: The On-going Battle..Xbox 360 or PS3??
I thought 5.1 surround sound was what both dvd and blue-ray had? Only difference was 1080p on blue-ray?
Not that it would make a difference in my case. I care more about an image being widescreen than i do the resolution or the sound, but good to know either way.
EDIT: Obvious redundancy is obvious.Last edited by Bacardi151; 08-28-2009, 03:52 PM.Comment

These are the formats used on Blu RayWith DVD, there were two main types of surround-sound formats, Dolby Digital and DTS. The goal of these formats was to take raw surround-sound audio--which is too large to fit on a DVD--and compress it so it fit on the disc. Both formats use what's called lossy compression, which means that some audio information is thrown away in the compression process. It's not a perfect solution, but it's done in a way so that you (hopefully) won't notice the missing information.
With Blu-ray, there's even more space available, so both Dolby and DTS have created new soundtrack formats with the aim of throwing away less information and therefore improving audio fidelity.
Just about every Disney and Sony movie use linear PCMDolby Digital Plus: Like standard Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus uses lossy compression to shrink the size of the audio information. However, it outdoes standard Dolby Digital by supporting a higher bit rate (6.144Mbps vs. 40Kbps) and more channels (7.1 vs. 5.1).
Dolby TrueHD: The major innovation of Dolby TrueHD is that is uses lossless compression. That means it's still able to compress the raw information to a smaller file size, but it does so without throwing away any information. It offers both a higher bit rate and sample rate than Dolby Digital Plus, to produce overall audio quality that's theoretically identical to the studio master. That also means it should sound identical to a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, which also uses lossless compression.
DTS-HD High Resolution: DTS-HD High Resolution is the step-up over standard DTS, and also uses lossy compression to shrink the size of the audio information. It outdoes standard DTS by supporting a higher bit rate (6Mbps vs. 1.5Mpbs), higher sample rate (96Khz vs. 48Khz), and more channels (7.1 vs. 5.1).
DTS-HD Master Audio: Like Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio uses lossless compression. It offers a higher bit rate than DTS-HD High Resolution, for overall audio quality that's, again, theoretically identical to the studio master. It should sound identical to a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.
Linear PCM (LPCM): Linear PCM forms the foundation of all of these soundtrack formats. It's like the language all your home theater digital audio components speak. No matter what soundtrack format is used, it's eventually converted to linear PCM so your AV receiver can play it back. Some Blu-ray movies actually include soundtracks in linear PCM mode, which has some advantages--it's high quality and compatible with every Blu-ray player on the market. The downside is that LPCM takes up a lot of space on the disc, which is why most disc makers opt to use either a Dolby or DTS soundtrack format.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. I would definitely echo this sentiment.Green Bay Packers | Milwaukee Brewers | Bradley Braves | Wisconsin Badgers
Marquette Golden Eagles | Milwaukee Bucks | Milwaukee PanthersComment

Disney used to use PCM, but have gone to DTS-HD MA the last year or so. Sony has used TrueHD, except for some titles at the beginning using PCM.Comment

I like getting Blu-Ray for new movies, but I'm not replacing tons of movies in my collection. It's nice to have, because if I'm buying something new I'd rather have a later technology with better quality....I have no interest in BR either.
