I have a couple of concerns about the Vita, but neither one of them are really game-breakers:

Backwards compatibility? It's a lot more feasible now since Sony has all but abandoned UMD's and brought out digital version of most PSP games. I'm kind of assuming Vita will be entirely digital like the Go, but I'm not sure if that's been announced.

Maybe I'm just in a bad area for connectivity, but I've never seen 3G as being powerful enough to support online gaming. I've traveled to areas with 4G and I can see it working just fine there, but with 3G I'm rarely able to do anything more than web-browse. Using my At-Bat app to watch MLB.TV is like a slideshow unless I'm using it at home. That's not a game-breaker for me though, because any gaming I do would almost certainly be through Wi-Fi and not 3G.

$250 for the Wi-Fi (I have a 3G wireless hotspot on my phone so I don't need it built into the Vita) might be the first gaming system I purchase on launch day - depends on the games available.

^ It's using a memory card format for games, so it will not be download only. As for the 3G. I kind of assumed that was more for being able to browse the web, check email etc.

Regardless, I'll prob be going the wifi route as well.

Sony's PlayStation Vita: first hands-on impressions - Engadget

The first thing that struck us is just how light the Vita feels in the hand. It's got a gorgeous five-inch OLED panel, monstrous for a portable system, but the plastics used in its construction make it seem lighter than the PSP or even some of our weightier smartphones. You're looking at firm glossy and matte plastic surfaces here, with the Start, Select and Power buttons flush in the glossy front. The face buttons feel small compared to the PSP or a DualShock 3, but they're firm and comfortable to press, and there's a nice floating D-pad on the left side which feels like it could handle a Street Fighter shoryuken or three. The transparent shoulder buttons don't feel much different than the ones on the PlayStation Portable, though perhaps a tad springier in their action, and between them there are a pair of iPod nano-like volume buttons and a pair of thin plastic covers. One hides the flash card slot, while another reveals a mysterious port of some sort -- none of the Sony representatives could tell us what it does, though there's also a larger port on the bottom of the system which apparently connects proprietary USB and / or networking cables.

this thing might make me start taking the train into work everyday instead of driving. i stress "might".

I'm ordering a new 2012 dodge charger srt8 next month with 465 HP/465 TQ so I'll have to decide if I want to play games on the way to work or drive a car bordering on supercar status...decisions, decisions...

I think it was brilliant for Sony to announce a price and holiday time while holding the exact date in their pocket for another show.

One other thing: I got a 3DS when it came out. While I do not regret it because my son LOVES it...if it was just me I think I would have waited for the VITA....especially after seeing it in action last night.

Spoken like a true New Yorker! Haha. It might really depend on the quality of the games...if you can save a sports game (The Show, Madden, FIFA, NBA2k) on Vita and pick it up at home (like what they showed with Monster Hunter) it would really complicate the decision.

Of course I would feel a little silly sitting on a train playing Gran Turismo driving a SRT8 Charger on Nurburgring on the way to work instead of just driving the actual car haha.

I'll put it this way - even if you're playing the game, you'll eventually be thinking about the car. If you're driving the car, you won't be thinking about the game.

At least until you reach your destination.
