Re: PSVITA Handheld Information
Update: Sony Confirms Vita Digital Discounts for U.S.
Exact details coming shortly.
Update: Sony has confirmed that digital games will be cheaper than physical games in the United States. A user on the NeoGAF forums spotted the following image in Best Buy's database, showing Vita games roughly $5 cheaper than their physical counterparts:
We reached out to Sony and they confirmed that "PSN games will be discounted. We will be issuing final pricing details shortly."
Keep checking back to IGN for the pricing structure once it's revealed.
Update (10/11/11): Andriasang is now reporting that official Japanese pricing has been released for Uncharted: Golden Abyss, confirming that downloads will be cheaper than retail titles in Japan.
The game will cost 5,980 yen (roughly $77.00) at retail, while the downloadable version will cost 4,900 yen (roughly $63.00). Keep in mind that these games will likely be cheaper when they're released in North America, though no official pricing has been announced.
This pricing scheme has currently only been confirmed in Japan, and Sony hasn't released any pricing information for North America.
Original story follows:
According to a post on Andriasang, Square Enix has officially announced the Japanese pricing scheme for the Vita launch title Army Corps of Hell. The package version will be 4,980 Japanese Yen and the download version will be 3,990 Japanese Yen.
While there's no evidence that this pricing structure will be reflected in other Vita games, it does indicate that there might be a discount for consumers that opt for the downloadable version. This is not always the case on the U.S. PlayStation Network when it comes to downloadable PSP games, for example, as most downloads mirror the price of their package version. This could be a change Sony is moving towards -- unless this is specific to Square Enix's pricing.
Andriasang also confirms that the package version of Army Corps of Hell will not require an additional memory card to save data -- player progress can be saved directly onto the game card.
The PlayStation Vita, Sony's upcoming portable platform, launches on December 17th in Japan. No U.S. release date has been announced.Comment

Re: PSVITA Handheld Information
I want a phyisical copy. Thats just me. Even if it was cheaper.
Guess it may also depend on what game. I just like the ability to trade and sell games I'm done with.Joshua:

Re: PSVITA Handheld Information
Only a $5 savings for the show. I'd rather spend that $5 and have a physical copy. Memory eventually runs out too, so at some point I'd have to carry multiple memory cards around anyway... why not just carry the games?
Besides, I like having a physical copy WAYYYYYYYY more.Comment

As long as Media Go will work with the Vita as it does the PSP, and I can transfer my digital content between memory sticks (or there's something comparable) I'm perfectly fine with it. And since it's tied into the PSN Store I'd be surprised if it doesn't.Comment

Re: PSVITA Handheld Information
I'm just not as attached to physical copies as I used to be. I think it has to do with being able to store every bit of PSP and PS1 content that I own on my computer. I have four PSP Memory Sticks totalling 20 GB, but WAY more digital content than I'd have room for on those sticks. So, I can use a program called Media Go to transfer the stuff to and from my computer to the memory sticks when I want to play those games (note: I DO have to sign into PSN from my computer when I do this, and it does authenticate it before the transfer). It's also a lot easier to keep track of than a bunch of UMD's and takes up far less space. And there's no danger of running out of storage space on my PC - at least for quite a while (and I've got so many other things to get rid of before that).

Re: PSVITA Handheld Information
I think the $5 digital discount is pretty reasonable. Figure you are not getting physical media, a case, manual, no shipping cost, they are passing those savings on to you. Thats not bad.
I do like the idea of a voucher of some sorts for the Vita version of MLB if you get the PS3 version, that would be sweetComment

Re: PSVITA Handheld Information
I'm a physical copy guy myself. But I hated the UMD's. They were so fragile. 1 wrong move and you got a hairline crack in the plastic caseing and the game wouldn't play.
I'm looking forward to the cartridge type format.
We got my son a pretty bad*** case for his DS that holds his carts, headphones, memory, etc.. all nice and snug. I'm jealous of the little rat, I want one for a Vita!Last edited by Chef Matt; 02-01-2012, 12:00 PM.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon.
