It's almost impossible to describe how much better the 3D is on the new model. I've gone from finding it almost necessary to have turned off to now wondering how I ever played these games without. Absolutely incredible.

Other things of note: the c-stick is completely on point and the additional shoulder buttons are a brilliant addition.

Oh, and Majora's Mask and Smash Brothers are so, so good.

This is the best handheld ever made, period. I almost think Nintendo should just give up on home consoles and focus only on portable gaming systems moving forward; they understand the market like no one else.

So I tried the demo for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on the eShop, and I think I actually enjoy it? I've never tried a Monster Hunter game before, so I figured I'd give the demo a shot and played through both hunts on it.

The combat definitely has a Dark Souls feel to it, which is the main reason I enjoy it so much. Making each swing count because of the speed of the attack, learning the animation windup and strikes of your weapon, and getting that timely roll in there. I only tried 2 weapons so far, but each weapon having a unique moveset definitely adds depth to the combat.

I'm on a normal 3DS XL, so the camera control has to be controlled by the touchscreen though, so that's not very enjoyable. While the C-Stick on the new 3DS seems really poor for precise movement, having it to control the camera probably would make controlling this game feel much better. I'm not about to go and buy a new 3DS though.

I was all set on buying Majora's Mask, but this demo has me considering picking up Monster Hunter too. The only thing I'm worried about besides camera control is, seeing that Monster Hunter is a big online game, if I'm playing on the go I won't be able to play online at all and will be stuck with solo play.

While MY is geared towards online, I know plenty of folks that okay offline and have out hundreds of hours into the series. It does ramp up the difficulty playing solo, but not impossible.

How sensitive is the additional C-stick? Glad the 3D is living up to the billing. I'm still waiting to see if more games that will utilize the controls/system will be released, but it is no doubt tempting.

And I agree with you 100% on Nintendo and handheld consoles. Sony has done a good job with the PSP and Vita (Vita more hardware than game library) but Nintnedo is in a class of its own when it comes to portable gaming.

I need to grab a bigger SD card. I've been using the original 4GB one that came with the system, but Monster Hunter is going to take up nearly 2/3 of it by itself. Had to delete a few older games to go download it.

IMO.. yes.
Better 3D and supposedly there will be games only playable on the new 3DS also.
I have a first gen 3ds (not XL) and am waiting until stores get more in of the new ones and will grab one then.

Get the new one. I gave my XL to my son, and this thing is just a solid piece of hardware.

I like being able to watch 3D YouTube videos on it through the browser now.

Any game recommendations? Never had a 3ds. So I want to start with older games. I also want to stay away from games I can get on any other console.

I'm thinking of starting with
Mario golf
Mario tennis
New super Mario 2

Would not be opposed to grabbing a couple more.

I 1000% this. Download the demo and if you like it, get it. It's my favorite game on 3DS too.

And if you're into something more chill, Animal Crossing New Leaf is one helluva game.
