    Re: Xbox One

I find it odd that anyone chooses to play any game because of a console's UI.

That said, the work Microsoft has put in on their console has been fantastic. My guess is that most of the folks that don't get the Xbox UI are not even running TV through it. I can be watching a TV and then playing a game in seconds. The new guide has really helped because one press of the Xbox button, even while watching TV, gives you a ton of access to your games, streaming apps, and all the stuff you might want to do on XBL with friends.

Even if you don't run TV through it, the new dash is much quicker, and just as snappy as the PS4 now. In fact, I loathe the PS4's loading times, because, while the UI is snappy, PSN is **** and slow as hell. And it's going to take more button presses to do anything, so more loading.

The Xbox UI has been faster and more convenient than the PS4 UI for a long time. But the current dashboard is a dream. I can't love it enough.

The interface of a device that you use on a regular basis is a pretty big deal. I used to run my tv through it but once Microsoft decided to quit supporting Kinect and gave up on it I quit. PSN is slightly slower than Live in speedtest only, I never have any issues in actual use of it compared to Live.

I just don't know what MS is thinking with the Xbox One's UI. I think they have no real direction because they seem caught somewhere between the dream of having this be a really interactive media center ala the original Xbox One Kinect enabled vision of a big hub and then they also want to be a snappy, game centric UI.

So because they choose to commit to neither particularly then the whole thing is a cluttered mess. And removing the Snap feature really was the last straw for me, that was the one thing that the Xbox One did that was super cool that made it worth having the tv hooked up..

PlayStation dashboard is awesome especially with folders. Just wish I could put the TV&Video app in a folder. Oh well.
But you are never connected to the internet, so what could you possibly be navigating other than "my games and apps"? All there on the home screen when you turn on, or on the window when you tap the xbox button.

It is quick, easy to get to the store (opening and searching is much faster than PSN), finding the free games with gold is easy with an icon on the home screen (PSN it is pretty clunky to find the free games unless that has changed in the past couple months.) Subscriptions (live, ea access) are right in my games and apps, whereas you need to go into the settings menu on PS4. Storage available in my games and apps vs settings menu in PS4. Auto upload saves to the cloud without limited space, PS4 needing to manage that storage in the settings as well. Auto sync the cloud save when you start the game on another console if you use multiple instead of the manual download on PS4.

Then when people say "too much stuff"...Home screen has 5 games/apps, pins below, a block for my games and apps, a block for free games with gold, then maybe one or two more with sales, free play days, whatever. Access the store and community stuff with presses of a bumper. PS4 has multiple boxes pop up for every single game you highlight? So I am not entirely understanding it other than a preferred console bias because they both seem to have the same types of stuff and space taken.

Speaking of our favorite console OS, being updated today:

Custom Gamerpics, Console Co-streaming, Arena Updates and More Roll Out to Xbox Fans Today

Fan feedback is an important part of how we’ve built Xbox over the years, and this month’s update, which we expect to roll out later today, is all about addressing feedback from the community: • Upload custom Gamerpics to your Xbox profile; choose how you want to express yourself. • Mixer Co-streaming is now on console, for everyone: With just a few clicks, you and up to three of your friends can stream together in a single broadcast. Plus, never miss your friends’ streams inside your Club and Arena Tournaments. • Sign-in to your Xbox One with just one press of the Xbox button on your controller. Now you can make your controller truly your own. • New user-generated tournaments for Killer Instinct on Xbox One means it’s never been easier to go to battle with your friends. Xbox App on iOS and Android updates bring support for LFG Sharing, Game Pass Browsing, an updated Language/Location Setting and an Android only feature supporting Messaging Chat Bubbles. Read more on these feature releases below: Express yourself with custom Gamerpics, Club profile pics, and Club backgrounds Starting this month, you’ll be able to upload an image from your console, Windows 10 PC, or mobile phone for your Gamerpic, or to customize your club’s profile pic or background. It’ll be available for everyone to see, so keep it clean – stick to the Xbox Live Code of Conduct. Co-streaming comes to your Xbox One console, Mixer tab in Clubs Co-streaming arrives on Xbox One! With co-streaming, you and up to three of your friends can broadcast together to create a shared, multi-view experience on Mixer. With co-streaming now on the console, you can invite others to co-stream and join a co-stream – entirely from your Xbox One. To invite another user to a co-stream, simply select ‘Invite to co-stream’ from their profile, or choose to invite your entire party to a co-stream. To accept, simply hold the Xbox button when you see the invite notification. At this point, if you’re not already broadcasting, simply pull up the broadcasting tab in the Guide while playing a game and select ‘Co-stream your game’ to start. Speaking of streaming, it’s now easier to discover live broadcasts from Club members. From your Club home page, you will now see a ‘Mixer’ tab. Navigate there to get a list of any Club members actively broadcasting on Mixer.

Wondering if co-streaming makes sense w/ something like Madden, 2 players playing against each other.

I think there are some valid complaints about the OS, it's certainly not for everyone. But a lot of the complaints remind me of Windows 8, the 'how do you even close something' ones where you simply learn how and move on. But instead some just beat that drum forever.

I am one of those complaining but honestly it's not that bad, it's just that Sonys is pretty simple and I guess that's what I have grown used to through the time spent with playing more PS4 games. Really I think for most people it really is what you get used to.

Also, yes I am still a little unhappy that Microsoft abandoned the idea of the Xbox One as being a media hub so to see the interface still reflect that is a bit of an annoyance, LOL

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, I love the XB1's interface. I find it simple and organized really.

First screen is for my gaming, 5 more recent are shown, and I can pin whatever I want below for quick access. There's also a quick link there to get to my entire collection of games and apps that I may not have pinned to home. It's really pretty simple, and it's got some convenient customization options.

Then you can shift over to the other screens for the console's other purposes, such as the store, and media and other stuff. So really, as someone who only uses my XB for gaming, Netflix, and the store I've only got to access the few tabs/screens I want, and I never even see anything else it has going on because I choose not to, and don't want to.

I find it quick, and simple, and organized in silo's which is nice.

I miss snap, but didn't use it often, but liked it's capability. I didn't like the new home menu or whatever you want to call it at first, but I get why they've changed it and it works well.

The UI can be busy if you want it to be, but all in all I find since it's done in silo's, or specific screens for specific functions of the console, that's what makes it great to me. I don't have to see or use the things I don't want to. Personally, I'd like to have the option to eliminate those other screens I don't use. I can't even tell you what they are right now because I just skip over them lol If I had the option to only have my home screen for gaming and my pinned items, then another for the store, that's really all I'd need.

I'm a bit surprised to see the complaints about it, because I've always thought it was the one thing that MS did really really well on the XB1. I get why the removal of some things it shipped with would bother some that used it, but all in all I think it's a solid UI.

It's not slow at all. It was at one time. That issue was addressed a while ago.

I have to say the UI is much better than it use to be. More customized UI is always better. I can pin what i want, I have the quick menu I can pop up anytime for any gaming needs, and have guide for tv pinned so can switch to tv off quick menu anytime. not snap, but works good and quick. If I need more specifics, just a rb/lb away. I wish we could customize screen order, rather have activity feed and store before mixer and tv/movie tabs.

Being off-line, the dashboard sucks, plain and simple. Online, it's even worse. Xbox 360 and PS4 blows it away in every possible way. When online and trying to buy a game, it's a pain in the *** and even starting a game is a pain in the *** especially if you're running off a second HDD/SSD.

To me, Xbox 360 and PS4 crushes it in terms of ease of use, navigation and is just simpler and not cluttered. Xbox One tries to fit so much crap onto the dashboard and the majority of it isn't even game related which annoys me to no end.

PS4 is easy, quick and simple to find whatever you're looking for and when OFF-LINE, just a few folders with my games in them as opposed to the horrible Windows 10 setup of Xbox One that again, tries way too hard to fit everything onto one screen.

Of course, I have hated the Xbox One dashboard since day one and it hasn't improved to where it even matches Xbox 360 let alone surpasses it or PS4. But that's just my own personal opinion.

Except for exclusives, I barely use the Xbox One Slim so thankfully, having to deal with that beyond horrible dashboard is minimal.

I've had my Xbox One S just over a week and have no complaints with the dashboard. Easy enough for me to navigate and find what I'm looking for, which usually isn't much outside of my gaming library (have everything pinned to the home page) and the store.

I have every game on an external HDD and games load faster then the internal by far. I think the UI is simple and fine. I really don't understand why there is so much complaint going on here but to each their own.

Before PS4 Pro, I was using the Samsung 850 Evo SSD as an external hard drive for the Xbox One Slim. When installing games, I had it setup to the SSD but when wanting to play a game, after turning on the console, I had to go to the left side of the screen and click on settings. From there, I had to go to the hard drive setting. Then, I had to select the SSD and from there, select Forza Horizon 3.

Granted, I only play the Xbox One Slim for exclusives so im probably missing something but that's what I had to do every time after turning on the console to get to the game in order to play it as the game wouldn't show up anywhere else.

As for unplugging the SSD, yes, I actually unplugged it every time I shut down the Xbox One Slim and the reason why is simple, for whatever reason, the SSD would actually stay warm the entire time despite the console being powered down. To me, the SSD should get cool and stay cool when not in use or when the console is turned off. That bothered me especially since it's not cheap so I would unplug it every time, mainly as a precaution.

Now, I only use the console's standard 500GB hard drive. Must admit that I don't like the internal hard drive not being removable. With the Xbox One Slim console itself cosmetic and hardware wise, that's the first complaint I have with it. The second being only one USB slot on the front.

Both are minor but when PS4 Pro doesn't give me these problems and the simple fact that for me personally, everything pretty much "hits" for me as opposed to "misses" in regards to what I personally care about and that's why I chose Sony and PlayStation 4 as my primary console this generation just like I chose Xbox 360 last generation because for me personally, it "hit" on everything where as PlayStation 3 missed more than hit for me.

Plus, I don't like Spencer anymore and think he's full of crap and hate Greenberg and Hyrb even more because honestly, they should both be gagged. Not only that but while Microsoft has been far superior to Sony in regards to features and services, I don't give a damn about any of that crap. I don't care if my TV can connect to Xbox One or not. Why should I when I can just you know, turn on my TV? I'm sure there's a reason for this and maybe it's a good one but I simply don't care. It's not why I buy consoles and definitely not why im a gamer and have been since NES.

Then add in the fact that Microsoft and Spencer wants their exclusives to be more focused to being a "games as a service" which is an online multi-player centered and packed in with micro-transactions game and that just doesn't appeal to me at all whatsoever.

On the other side, I have a bunch of PS4 exclusives with the pretty much all of them being single player off line story driven games. A few linear, a few open world and a few open ended. It's just that for me when I compare both, PS4 gives me way more of what I want and what I want the most is games, plain and simple. That's what I care about. All of this other crap means nothing to me and if anything, is worthless to me. Sony has a lot of the same apps that Microsoft has and the result from me is the same - worthless useless crap.

But don't think that I hate Xbox One or Microsoft because I don't. If I did, I wouldn't have bought an Xbox One for the fourth time this past December. If all goes according to plan, by end of 2018, I would have played and completed 10 Xbox One exclusives and while this is about half of what PS4 gives me by the end of 2018, im perfectly fine having two exclusives a year (on average) that easily make the console worth the purchase and worth keeping.

Of course, it's all about personal preference so to each their own.
