As someone who worked for Blockbuster over 12 years ago as a store manager, I can already tell you that Netflix had ZERO impact on what killed Blockbuster. What killed Blockbuster was very simple - the elimination of all late fees which accounted for like 90% or something like that of their profits. It was basically free money for Blockbuster. Netflix didn't really take off until after Blockbuster had already died out and was absorbed by Dish Network.
Blockbuster streaming was too little too late and the funny thing is that Blockbuster had the chance to purchase Netflix outright early on but declined because it was seen as a major risk and huge loss of money at the time from Blokbuster's side which is actually true because once you eliminate your primary source of income and profits, acquiring any brand, company and whatnot becomes a huge potential liability and one that Blockbuster wasn't going to take.
As for GameStop, it's beyond horrible deals for their business and company that may eventually kill them off. Include digital sales increasing and better memberships such as Gamers Club Unlocked and Prime from Best Buy and Amazon respectively and it doesn't look good for GameStop.
If you do a youtube search for turning $150 cash into $500 credit at GameStop, you'll see why they could eventually follow Blockuster. They offer insane deals combined with buy 2 get 1 free on pre-owned titles and a lot of people take advantage of it. Granted, you can't blame those who take advantage since GameStop started the offers and allow you to take advantage of them but what really sucks is the long term affects of if GameStop were to shut down completely.
Eliminate GameStop, EB Games, etc. as competition and the excellent bonuses and positives that you get as a GCU/Prime member will absolutely positively decrease over time.
I'm not a fan of GameStop but in no way, shape or form do I want them to go bankrupt, etc. because if they do, long term wise, it will be worse for all gamers because less competition equals less benefits and bonuses for us from those other competitors.
No GameStop would pretty much guarantee less benefits for GCU/Prime members in regards to gaming and electronics. While there's a few other reasons as well, this reason is my number one reason why I don't want GameStop to follow in the footsteps of Blockbuster. Granted, it's a selfish reason but one that benefits all consumers. Eliminate competition/competitors and it's the consumers who suffer the most in the long term.
