Next Xbox Will Reportedly Integrate Broadcast TV Feeds

The official reveal of the next Xbox may still be weeks away, but all signs point to Microsoft making a major play for dominance of the living room. A new report from The Verge suggests the next-gen system will be capable of integrating a user's cable or satellite signal into a unified user interface, similar to Google TV. According to the site's multiple sources, the console will connect to set-top boxes via HDMI and combine broadcast content with its interactive interface. Microsoft is reportedly working with content partners to offer more streamlined integration with the service.

What's more, Kinect will play a key role in the next Xbox's TV services. Using the motion sensor and camera, the system will be able to detect multiple users simultaneously and will intelligently control playback based on their movement. For example, if a viewer turns their head away from the TV, the Xbox will supposedly pause the video on-screen — not unlike the Smart Pause found on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4.
Microsoft's plans to expand its home entertainment focus are well known. Last year, the company announced the creation of a new Los Angeles-based studio that would specialize in "true interactive content" for the Xbox platform. Just this week, the Microsoft revealed that it had sold its IPTV branch, Mediaroom, so that it could "commit 100 percent of its focus on consumer TV strategy with Xbox."
With Microsoft's rumored May 21st Xbox event fast approaching, we may learn more about the new system sooner rather than later. In the meantime, share your thoughts on the Xbox TV rumors...

This makes since with the always online and the next Xbox being the center of your living room entertainment rumors. This essentially turns any TV into a smart TV, like Apple TV, Google TV, Boxee TV, Pocket TV, or even connecting your Android Smartphone to your TV. I am waiting to see how its integrated, what it does different than the other services. My only problem is, that if this is true, the next Xbox is going to seem like a money magnet. $50/year for Xbox Live, then other services like NetFlix will cost you extra money per month to take advantage of.

        I AGREE COMPLETELY!!

I'm not buying a $500 system so I can run TV through it. I'm buying a $500 system so I can play games.

I don't understand why you guys keep whining about this. Consoles have been adding entertainment stuff since the playstation was able to play cd's. Microsoft isn't getting rid of games, they are adding things to the system so other people will buy it. As for the question of is it supposed to wow you, no, it's not aimed at you if you don't care about, which is why tech sites were the ones who got the information on it.

By the way, if always online is true...

Good luck hooking that system up in 10-15 years when you wanna play that awesome game you remembered only to find out there's no server support and you now have an XBox (or PS4 if they go that road) doorstop.

dude, its my opinion and others too. I wanna hear about games, games, and more games, not something my cable box does for me already. Maybe some spec news. MS isnt winning anyone over with this stuff.

If anyone is Whining it seems like that is you all the time if someone has an option about MS.

If you really want to hear about games, just look at everything not made by Sony that has been announced for the next systems. Microsoft hasn't revealed the system, which is why you haven't heard anything about their games. It's like some of you have never been through a console launch before.

Its not that we want to hear about any games in particular. Its the fact that Microsoft is clearly not aiming this system at gamers, focusing more on "winning the living room" with features that shouldn't matter in a video game system, instead of focusing on the things that truly matter to true gamers that is alienating people.

Plus you've been around long enough to know how big every little detail is blown up here.

Microsoft and Sony have both tried to do that, it doesn't mean that games are being ignored. The tag line for the ps3 was "it only does everything" and Sony always touted it's multimedia capabilities but now it's an issue? If you don't want to use any of it, then that's fine, but I don't see how adding features and/or shrinking the amount of boxes you have around your tv is a bad thing.

Again, the only point I've stuck on in this thread was pretty much everything that was added was optional. By making this stuff (kinect, always on internet, etc.) mandatory it shows they really don't care what the gamers want.

I lived on a floor with 40 different people in my platoon, every single room had at least one 360. I don't know a single person in real life that has ever owned a kinect.

Personally if that stuff wasn't required I word say oh, that's awesome. Look at everything it can do and I get to choose which stuff I will use. The very fact they are telling me that I have to have stuff I absolutely don't want just means I'll use a different box to get that stuff.

They make kinect mandatory because otherwise, all you get are ****ty tacked on features since developers have no idea who has it and who doesn't.

Not really. I'm sure there will be awful stuff but it's much more likely to have a worthwhile impact on games since developers can spend time on it knowing that it's guaranteed to be there.

Cause I might be able to arrange this, I'm just not sure you are going to get peoples honest opinions, but hey if you want to hear just want you want to hear its the way to go.

Settle down everyone don't say you don't wanna hear about this and would rather hear about games. It might be taken as whining
