Microsoft sells Mediaroom, Xbox to be their TV strategy going forward

    Quote:

The following is a post from Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

Today, Microsoft and Ericsson announced a definitive agreement for Ericsson to acquire Mediaroom, the number one IPTV platform deployed by TV operators around the world. This acquisition is mutually beneficial and strategically aligned for both parties. Ericsson will continue to invest in the growth and success of Mediaroom to the benefit of customers, employees, and the industry. It allows Microsoft to commit 100 percent of its focus on consumer TV strategy with Xbox.

We are proud of the world-class engineering and business achievements within Mediaroom. They have a rich history of driving innovation in IPTV. As early pioneers, they built the infrastructure to stream video on limited bandwidth, and today they enable multiscreen entertainment experiences for pay TV subscribers. Mediaroom has contributed to the evolution of TV and powers 22 million set-top boxes today in 11 million subscriber households.

With the sale of Mediaroom, Microsoft is dedicating all TV resources to Xbox in a continued mission to make it the premium entertainment service that delivers all the games and entertainment consumers want –whether on a console, phone, PC or tablet. And with 76 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world with 46 million Xbox LIVE members, it is a mission that gets us out of bed in the morning.

It is not a mission that we can achieve alone. We want to partner with the industry to deliver the next wave of innovation in games and consumer entertainment. We will partner with content creators, studios, labels, networks, content aggregators, operators and distributors to make this happen. We believe the future of home entertainment is one where TV becomes more simple, tailored and intelligent. We believe the best is yet to come for this industry.

Our vision and energy for the future of entertainment is more focused than ever. Stay tuned.

True, but Little Johnny wants his map packs before anyone else or the extra mode or exclusive you will only get with the Xbox version of a game. I am with you as I will go with a PS4 or even stop gaming if the rumored trends occur, but the fact is the industry will continue on without me and the others that will not buy it, as there will be plenty of other Johnnies that will.

Now that would be awesome! I'd kill for one of the systems to do this (and not be too bad of a power hog).

Then you truly have the features of Xbox (Netflix, Amazon, etc) more quickly available...

Not sure any system will do this or not though...it'd allow them to really take over the living room though. It's always a tad annoying to have to change inputs on tv and whatnot. I know it's not that bad, but if it was all integrated it'd be amazing.

I know it is expensive, but the Logitech remotes would do just that. Press the bluray button, if programmed correctly it will turn on the bluray, change the input..etc.

My Samsung TV and Bluray player do that. Turn on BR and TV turns on and goes to correct input.

I'm really not sure about the 720. Always on doesn't bother me to the point of not getting a system but camera always on and could be monitored by outside sourse = No F'n way.

So really if either system does the camera thing it will be no sale.

Just going to wait until all facts come out but right now it seems my lone system will be a PS4.

MS can't be serious with this IPTV. What are they going to do that all the other companies who have tried it didn't do? You can do IPTV all you want to, but you aren't changing the TV model by yourself. There is a reason that cable providers bundle the channels together. The channels force them to in contracts because the contracts are all based on the # of subscribers. That's why every channel wants to be in the base package.

Is MS going to try to break from that and allow you to purchase each channel on its own? That's fine and all, but I hope they realize that ESPN will cost $20+, other top channels will cost around $10, etc. No one is really going to be saving money.

The only option I see is for MS to produce its own TV shows that people actually want to watch. They have a lot of pull, but at this point, it looks like all wasted effort that will hurt the original purpose of the box, to play games.

I have one I used when I had surround sound set up, but with the new house I didn't want wires going everywhere.

I more mean just the fact that xbox is on in the background and can easily take over the TV. Now I have to turn it on, wait for it to boot up, etc. Even if it's one button push it's not integrated.

I dunno, just an idea. Might not make sense power wise, but who knows. We'll see in May when MS announces it.

I agree. I get it that companies want to "win the living room" now, but I'm starting to get this sinking feeling that for MS, it's entertainment first, then games. Gamers are going to be the first people to adopt your console.

Exactly. Microsoft seems too focused on things not video game based for me to even think about buying their console if stone of these rumors are true.

I'm a gamer, all I want is my video game system to play video games. Everything else should be optional. I use my ps3 for Crunchyroll because my TV doesn't have an app for that... But even then, it still needs to be about games first.

Im not even mad that they want the Xbox to stream netflix, be your cable box, do your taxes and fix breakfast for you in the morning. Cast the net as wide as you can. The problem is where the thing won't work if Microsoft can't monitor it; specifically when it comes to playing the games. If the gaming console would play games without the online requirement I would have zero qualms about it.

My 360 hasnt been online in over 2 years (check my xbox button to the left yall) because I refuse to buy gold. But it still works and I still play it offline all the time. Now I cant do that? Yeah ok.

Agreed that casting the net far and wide is fine... If those things are optional. Making them a requirement is a no-go for me.

My systems are normally always hooked up to the internet (though ps3, my 360 hasn't been plugged in for over a year now) but Live Gold is an absolute joke, and telling me that my system HAS to be connected to work makes me say I'm not going to buy one.

If all this stuff that I have no interest in using (Xbox live, kinect, all these media things) were optional I would have no qualms purchasing.

My issues with gold are some of the silly restrictions it has in place. You can't send message on Xbox.com to people on your friends list(on Silver), apps like Youtube are unavailable on Silver, etc.

I also have no issue with "casting the net as wide as you can", but games will be the deciding factor when it comes to the new consoles. Being able to use Netflix is nifty, but what can I play?
