Agreed, games will look so much more realistic with realistic physics, animations, and facial expressions. This is one reason I couldn't play Skyrim, it had good graphics but the characters moved like a Mario Brothers game.

I don't expect a huge upgrade in graphics but really hope we see more varied games and IP's.
I've been so FPS burned out for a few years now and while I don't know what I want, I do know to get me back into FPS they need to do something other than adding 1 million more guns. Like try making SP last more than 6 hrs. That would be a start.

I'd love to see more puzzle games and new platformers etc..

I'm excited where next gen takes us but just wish I had the will to not jump right at release. Would rather wait and see how it goes and then jump in down the line if I like it.
Reality is I wouldn't get any sleep knowing there was a new system I could be messing with..

Well I can tell you right now that out of all the titles we are currently working on, single player has taken a backseat to multiplayer.

This coming generation is geared toward the multi-player / online connected experience versus any sort of epic single player experience.

Dont get me wrong, there will be some amazing single player games down the pipeline, but from all the industry events I have attended and all the major players I have spoken with, its all about the "connected" experience.

Yep...... Of course it could be developers cop out to go mp instead of just admitting they've reached their ability of AI programming
MP will NEVER be more important than SP for me.
I'll just continue to pass on the short SP and MP only games and put money elsewhere.

Connected experience may not mean "just" multiplayer. Think of what Sony's doing with streaming games. This could be considered connected to some people. I hardly do any multiplayer anymore, it's just old and very few people play it the right way. So many people have gotten so obsessed with modding and cheating to be the best that it's not worth it.

The only games I wish would focus on the offline experience is sports games. Stop giving us worthless online modes and actually deliver an in depth franchise mode *cough Madden *cough. It seems like every sports game these days has some huge online mode every year and very few improvements to AI, if not worse AI.

There still are some great single player only games, Bioshock, God of War, Tomb Raider, and games like Borderlands which I don't necessarily consider multiplayer because I only play with my friends and we're on the same side. There will always be a place for games like Call of Duty/Battlefield and games like that, I just don't see a place in it for sports games when the offline section isn't even that good.

I agree. I was on the MP side for a year or so (when I was playing with OS'ers a ton). Just tough now that I have other responsibilities.

Now I primarily play single player games that are awesome. Much better experience IMO too.

I hope connected can still give a good single player experience. I don't have the hours needed to not suck at COD type games online, so choose not to play those.

Madden 13's CCM was exactly what I posted I wanted (thx Google for the link) a couple years ago, so obviously loved it, and look forward to how it continues to evole into next gen. I'm all for everything being online, though I'm not a competitive gamer in the slightest. Just enjoy the benefits and with baked-in co-op being in so many games now. Borderlands 2 is absolutely an online game when played co-op, lol.

It's online, but not a competitive shooter like Call of Duty. Of course it's online when played in co-op, but still a story based game that allows for immersion with friends.

Im fully aware of what direction "connected" is headed. Theres many things I can not speak about , however let me give an example of something that everyone in the industry is taking notice of and trying to replicate.

                        Candy Crush!!

A free facebook game that is a single player experience, however because it is "connected" through facebook, it becomes a very competitive title among friends.

There are literally hundreds of games based of the Bejeweled formula such as Candy Crush, but none has ever been the revenue generator that Candy Crush has become.

Candy Crush currenly has over 15 MILLION players per day, over 100 MILLION players per month....and over 12 BILLION games played per month... and because of the competitive nature of the game, some people will pay facebook coins to get an advantage. If only 1% of players paid only $1, thats $150,000 of revenue generated per day.

This is where game companies are looking now for revenue versus the normal title cost at the POI.

They are trying to make it a competitive enviroment among friends, versus the tried and true actual implementation of what we know now as multi-player. Your single play experience is about to change.

Right. The true gamers don't want anything like that, but the "casual gamers" (lawd I hate that term) eat that stuff up like it's... well... candy. That = dollars = happy game companies.

Crimson isn't trying to dissuade you, or maybe he is. He's just speaking openly from a position of first-hand knowledge on the subject so take the information for what it's worth to you.

This paradigm shift has been in the works for a while anyways - it's just that new console functionality (and built around ideas like these) had to be implemented first, which would mean new consoles/a new generation of consoles.

The master gaming race has had to deal with this for years, it's just the console lifecycle that has held this back from hitting your TV.

Its not about the actual game of Candy Crush, its about capitalizing on the competitive nature thats inside each and every one of us. It was the same as a Arcade titled called Trials. All it took was one person posting about his best time, and people here downloaded the game just to beat him....or back awhile ago people were on a pinball kick and a small segment of people here all downloaded the pinball packs and tried to outdo on another.

Look at video game achievments, it means completely zero in the long term of things, but there is a segment out there that likes to be competitive and out perform everyone else. Even to the point that they will download or pay for memory cards that will add to their gamerscore. They spend real life $$$, for something completely meaningless in the long run.

Look at pretty much any MMO. People pay real life cash for in game goods that have zero tangible value outside of the game world. RMT / Currency sellers are able to make a sizeable profit selling a virtual good. All that money doesnt go back to the game companies, it goes into a 3rd parties pocket.

Look at Gearscore for World of Warcraft. You have millions of people that play that title and it all basically boils down to " what is your gearscore ". Now you only have a certain number of chances to upgrade per week.....so what if there was a way you could pay that $5 or whatever it was to reset your instance lockouts and go again? DCUO already had great success doing it.

Take post counts for example. Meaningless...has ZERO value to most people. But there is a segment of that population that will do whatever they can to just +1 their post count all day long.

Next Gen is about milking as much money from the playerbase as possible and seeing higher returns on investment. Games are getting much more expensive to make, pirating is at an all time high, peoples expectations are much higher....and yet profit margins are shrinking.

What next gen is going to try to do is bring that competitive nature of everyone to the forefront and attempt to capitalize on it financially.

Even if its just $1 per every 100 people playing, thats still a nice increase in revenue and profit that can go back into the development studios.

Without an additional revenue stream coming in, you would most likely start to see the smaller companies all be forced out of the business, and only the major studios would be left.

This is something that no one can possibly want.

Not every game needs to have the super huge development cost or be a Triple A game. Look at the new Tomb Raider sold 3.4 million copies and it some how failed to meet expectations. In what world is selling "only" 3.4 million copies of a game bad or under achieving? It's not ok for the EA's and Activisons to continue to milk its fan base with season passes and map packs yes. Its not healthy for the industry or us. Nobody takes chances on new IPs its more and more sequels coming out every year see Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed.

I think it would be ok if the video game companies started making smaller games at say a $30 price point.
