Both companies should focus on 1080p/60 FPS consistently first before worrying about 4k, which they aren't going to be able to hit consistently anyway.

Neither (assuming Xbox One has one as well) are "worrying" about 4k since these won't even be close to having the power for 4k games. No games will be 4k native. Based on all the speculation, you can look at this as a little more power to do exactly that, to consistently hit 1080p/60fps. But then would upscale to 4k and give 4k streaming for those with the televisions to use that.

I'm 50% in support of this post and lusting after new hardware like the good little techie devil that I am. I've never been so torn to be honest.

I'm the owner of 2 PS4's and 2 Xbox Ones so I'm doubly invested in both companies. But then on the flip side to that I could always sell one of each with some games and get the new systems.

I guess in the end I do think this is unnecessary and capricious but I would be lying if I didn't admit to be intrigued and wanting "new stuff" lol..

Yeah, I'm conflicted about this mid-gen hardware refresh era that we seem to be heading toward. On the one hand, I think the games already look good for this console gen. On the other hand, there are some titles that I wouldn't mind performing better (i.e. - Just Cause 3 with its frame rate problems and Battlefield (Frostbite) running at 720p on X1). I'm curious to see how devs will handle it.

                    Re: Xbox One

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag ran at 1080P / 30FPS with a day one patch over two years ago. BOTH consoles are easily capable of hitting that and for FPS, 60FPS is definitely possible. It's up to the developers to optimize the games in order to do hit that target and for the publishers to give them the time to do so.

Sad part is that visuals aren't everything. Games look great but if they play like crap, run like crap, has a crappy story and/or characters, etc., will it really matter how good the game looks when everything else is crap?

Developers and publishers need to stop worrying so much about the visual aspects and work more on the stuff that actually matters.

Luckily, Phil Spencer isn't interested in an Xbox One.5 and I hope it stays that way.

This is based on what? Many developers would disagree with you regarding 60fps at 1080p. If it were one or two games then maybe but other than sports games and racing games, 60 fps at 1080p has been a real struggle

Daniel, current gen consoles have had plenty of struggle with 1080p and frame rate issues (either/or) in plenty of games

60FPS isn't necessary for all games. It depends on the genre. FPS are the main genre where 60FPS is needed. Other genres, not as much. While it was only 30FPS, Far Cry Primal maintained that for pretty much the entire game. PS4 was at native 1080P with Xbox One at sub 1080P. Far Cry Primal wasn't a fast paced shooter and had no multi-player so you could argue that 60FPS wasn't needed at all. Uncharted 4's multi-player has been confirmed to run at 1080P/60FPS. Granted, its Naughty Dog and they're a first party studio but still, they were able to get it to where they wanted it on the CURRENT PS4.

Hard Reset Redux has been confirmed to run at 1080P/60FPS on BOTH the current PS4 and current Xbox One consoles. And that's from basically a no name developer. I'm sorry but im so sick and tired of hearing and reading about all this bull crap. The consoles aren't releasing the games or making them. The publishers and the developers are. Maybe if they take the time needed as opposed to rushing the games out (and let's be honest, ho many games have been released this gen that DIDN'T need a day one patch to fix bugs, glitches, FPS, resolution, etc.?), they would be more consistent with getting games to run at 1080P/30FPS/60FPS. Instead, they just want to rush the games out, patch them, count their money from us "don't have the balls not to buy on release day" and move on.

Not only that but here's a simple little fact that majority seem to forget about. Games ran at 1080P/30FPS/60FPS last gen, especially on Xbox 360 but it did take a few years to do so. Why any gamer thinks that they're getting a power high end PC two years in is beyond me. Games that have come out in the first two years of this gen were in development long before the consoles were even released. Only NOW are developers finally starting to learn more, adapt and get better results and even then, it still takes time.

Doubling the GPU/CPU of the PS4/Xbox One isn't going to automatically give you what you're already expecting now. It's STILL up to the publishers and the developers. Not the consoles themselves. If you get a money hungry publisher like EA, Activision, Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft (yes, them too) who just wants to release the game already so it can make their investors happy, do you really think that it's as easy as flipping a switch and saying, there we are...1080P/60FPS??? No, it isn't. Developers don't hit their intended target the majority of the time simply because they get pushed and rushed by the publishers to just "finish the game" so they can release it.

Seriously, gamers need to stop kissing all these publishers asses and giving them what they want when it's not even needed.

Here's something else that no one has thought of yet. Let's say that the new PS4 comes out and the games do look that much better but in turn, it costs the publishers more money to achieve this and because of this, they decide to up the price tag from $60 to $70 or higher (or insane if you live in Canada). Then what? Then what will everyone say?

Oh, they needed more power. Ummm, no. They needed more money and who better than all the suckers called gamers???

Because the games aren't fully optimized, tested and given the time needed to do so. No one seems to take these factors into account or the fact that publishers do rush the developers and I have no doubt in my mind that being a developer for the majority of publishers is hell at times. You may get an exception like Naughty Dog here and there but that's rare.

Also, did anyone ever think that maybe it's also because nearly every game this gen has been released six months too early?

Another side note - resolution and FPS is also greatly impacted by the amount of textures in games so maybe, developers should use other means. Textures also effects the loading time of games. Which is why a game like Far Cry Primal loads super quick and is at a consistent 1080P/30FPS throughout the game.

Sorry but everyone is blaming the consoles when the publishers should be blamed first and foremost, followed by the developers even though I blame the publishers a LOT more.
