Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

Adventures in making old games work:

I guess with the hype of Episode VII I decide to install my copies of KOTOR I (never finished) & II (wanted to see restored content) as well as finally buy Republic Commando on Steam.

KOTOR II was fine since it got that big Steam update earlier this year which included workshop support. Pretty nice being able to just click on subscribe and have all the content installed, and I assume the update this year also included wide screen support.

Republic Commando ended up being an easy case of swapping mod files to get a wide screen resolution and an FOV slider. Oddly enough, the mouse is a mess to use in menus and just jumps all over the place. It seems to be fine for actually aiming in game though.

KOTOR I was much more involved. I had to download a no-cd crack of the .exe to replace the one from Steam so I could run a wide screen patcher. I also had to edit the patch file for the patcher so that in-game movies would play. After that I had to edit in my resolution in the .ini file. Thought I had it all sorted, but the game screen would shift down and to the right when I had it running in 1920x1080. My PC runs to a TV as well as a monitor and it turns out the game didn't like running in widescreen on the TV, but is fine on the computer monitor.

    Fun times.

Haven't bought anything on sale but jumped on Endless Legend for $10. Hope this was worth it.

            Glad they addressed this.

I wasn't worried really about the issue, and I'm relieved to hear their answers.

On the note of sales, I haven't picked up much this Winter Sale. I've grabbed Witcher 3, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Organ Trail, and some others but I've generally felt underwhelmed by the sales.

I went ahead and got Grim Dawn off my wishlist when I read that after it's latest patch, the game is now feature complete. All left now is more optimization and polish. I've already put a good amount of hours into it, very fun ARPG. One of those games where I have to really force myself to stop playing once I get rolling.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

I'm out and about now for new years, so all I have is my Surface 3 for gaming (not the Pro version either.)

Anyone have any non-intensive games that are pretty fun/cheap?

So far, I have Chroma Squad (super cheesy fun), Darkest Dungeon, Papers Please, Card Hunter and FTL installed. I have a few others that aren't installed like Dungeon of the Endless, Dungeons of Dredmor, This War of Mine (not sure how well this would run on it, but it's a great game.)

Basically, if you guys know any indie-type games (or games with low min specs) that are slower paced and work best with mouse/kb I'd greatly appreciate it.

Turn-Based would be preferred because with the small kb and random nature of where I'll be using it, the speed/reaction times I have using this tablet/mouse aren't up to par for fast-paced action games (so stuff like Binding of Isaac, Risk of Rain and the like I ruled out.)

You played Massive Chalice? I think it's turn based and might be able to run on your Surface.

Invisible Inc. is amazing. One of my favorite turn based games of all time.

The Banner Saga is good too. The combat isn't too complex but it has a good story and an interesting world.

The Banner Saga probably takes around 8-10 hours to beat, while Invisible Inc is a Roguelike that takes around 4-6 hours for a campaign.

Never played IX. Played VII, VIII and X but never IX.

Also I think Valve is just getting a laugh out of everything Half Life 3. I mean this thing with the winter sell secret code showing a man and a crowbar and other hints and stuff is making the community go insane. Then Steam rewarding the Red Herring Badge if you follow the clues...lol. Then Valve will release a statement later with the words, "Sorry, we just wanted to see what the reaction would be like." Lol.

I got a game from my humble bundle monthly this month that may work for you. It's called Mushroom 11. I've only played through the first chapter but it seems like lots of fun.

                            Store Page:
An award-winning anti-platformer where destruction is the only way to move. Mold yourself into any form by destroying your cells, and traverse a devastated landscape filled with brain-twisting puzzles and bizarre mutations. Are you ready to break the mold?

                            MINIMUM:
                            OS: Windows XP and up
                            Memory: 2 GB RAM
                            Storage: 500 MB available space

Kinda a Where's my water type puzzle game, but I'm enjoying it. Was mentioned in several GOTY awards like RPS and IGN.

I also second Banner Saga. It's a fun Turn-Based RPG.

I didn't buy anything during the Winter Sale. Nothing really caught my eye. I hope they go back to their old format with these big sales. Having to scroll through dozens of pages is just a turn off for me.

The new sale system isn't conducive to getting people to buy random games they don't need or don't have time for. For me, under the new format, I only look for games on my wishlist and nothing more. In the old format, I would buy all sorts of random crap just because it was a Daily or Flash Sale. So in the sense of saving money, I'm glad Steam changed the way they operate sales
