Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

An OC'd 1070ti is basically going to perform like a 1080. Will both of those cards last 4 years? I really don't know with the way games are progressing and becoming so GPU dependent. I'm happy with my 1070ti. I bought it hoping to get 2 years out of it and so far the performance I get at 1440p makes me believe I will get those 2 years easily, but I don't really know if I'd feel confident enough to say I'd like my chances getting 4, but that is because of how the tech is progressing.

I would hold out until September to see what Nvidia does with the 1180. If it isn't out then, just snag a 1070ti or 1080 on sale.

Yea I'm iffy on a 1070 ti lasting as long as my last couple cards. It feels like we are in a weird spot with GPU's.

I'd like to hold out until the new Nvidia cards release, I just hope my 290 agrees lol.

I think you can wait Phobia. It’s just a few months and we’ll know more what the latest cards can do.

I think we all know his pain on waiting, though. When you get the real urge to upgrade something on your PC, no matter how logical it is to wait on a potential release of new tech, you really can't do it.

Look at me earlier in the thread. I upgraded my monitor and was going to wait for the new GPUs to be out later this year.... my strength to wait lasted maybe a week and I had a 1070ti on it's way, haha.

I'm normally pretty good about holding off but in this case I'm in a weird spot. I went from a 750w powersupply to a 650w Gold Supernova under the impression I was going to swap out the power hungry 290x for a more power friendly Nvidia GPU. Well right at that time is when mining destroyed the GPU pricing so I've been holding out for prices to drop, while holding my breath that the 290x isn't stressing my 650w power supply to the point of damaging it or causing a failure. Then, right as GPU prices fall we are in this mid-cycle gap waiting for the new GPU's to drop, so it's just been a situation of bad timing across the board.

I played PUB last night and my settings are mixed between ultra on textures, low for foliage, high for view distance, for example and my frames were lows of 70's and highs of 120's. So the 290x is still plenty capable of running anything I currently play very well, it's just the insane high wattage it pulls which has me in fear of killing my power supply.

I'm going to hold out for the upcoming cards...

Do any of you guys have the Steam Controller and Link where you can play on your TV? The Steam sale has this combo down to $34 for the pair.

Any yea's or nay's getting this?

I came close to pulling trigger on it, but always back out after reading more reviews on how you can't get rid of the latency issue. I'm pretty certain that's why steam is trying to unload the links for what $4 bucks right now. In theory, it sounds great but I think this first generation steam link was a bit of a flop so I'm going to wait it out and see if a 2.0 version is released (hopefully with no latency).

Ok, thanks. I didn't do any more digging on the reviews. Steam games can get wonky to begin with for my PC and Saitek P2500 game controller (it's older, but it's a beast and I love the feel and layout).

Fortunately, I found the xbox360 controller emulator program that seemed to work on the few games where I was getting the perpetual spinning in circles when trying to use the controller. I downloaded The Bureau XCOM Declassified game last night and got the spinning but I could fix it with that program/app pretty easily. Spec Ops The Line got fixed too and able to use this Saitek controller a bit like an Xbox360 controller.

Thanks again for the heads up.

If you have a samsung or sony tv. The steamlink app should be in the appstore, you could try it out on there.

I have a link. I didn't mind the latency in most games. It isn't something you would use in competitive or reflex oriented games, obviously, but for something you can sit back and play like even The Witcher 3 it did its job well for me. I used a wired connection for it. I was even able to play Rocket League online(I know it contradicts what I said about playing competitively) and once adjusted it was working well enough I could keep up at the Diamond ranks.

I eventually got a very long HDMI cord that runs to my TV at the moment since I game on the TV that is in the same room as my PC. When I eventually move and have a potentially different setup I will definitely keep the Link with me and not hesitate to use it when I feel like playing in a room away from the PC.

Nvidia came out and said it'll be a long while before the 1100 Series is out. As a result i've seen more people upgrading to the 1080Ti.

With that in mind, I read something yesterday that it seems possible, if not likely that we see GPU prices come down ~20% in the next month or so.

I'm hoping that's the case. Looking to get up to a 1070ti.

If I see a 1070ti in the $400 to $425 range I'm snagging it if that's the case. I've seen them go for as low as $460 so if 20% is true then it should be around the $400 mark.

                              This one is $460

Got mine for $400. If what nVidia is saying is true, I'd 100% recommend getting one at $400.
