Those categories makes me wonder what the Stanley Parabel is and what's up with dwarf fortress.

There's other games for you to try out as well, if you wanna check out some "indie" type games. I'm working on a spreadsheet of games that I feel are worthwhile to me. It was done for another member of OS, but everyone's willing to look at it. Eventually I'm going to get a blog started just to write down my thoughts about gaming.

Here's the Spreadsheet . Again, this is by no means "Hey you gotta play these" but they are games that are well-polished for being "smaller" releases and I think are at least worth a merit of looking at.
I would consider adding Super Meat Boy to the "Games to Play If You Hate Your Life" category.

Steam just started auto-downloading the XCOM expansion for me...looks like it's out. 4 GB...this is definitely no patch.

If I remember correctly, its an expansion for PC, but a standalone game for consoles. I applaud Firaxis in today's environment, putting the PC player first.

Not really a good thing for PC gamers, since it's an expansion you'll have to buy the base game as well if you don't already have it and it's not any cheaper.

The Stanley Parable really... it really has no genre. It's just a good game that should be played. Check out the demo for it, it's completely separate from the game that was specifically made as a demo (it's not just "Here try some of level 1".) I honestly think everyone that has a computer capable of running it should at least give the demo a try.

Dwarf Fortress is an ASCII game that is completely free. There's graphic packs out for it that change it from this:

It's really the ultimate god-sandbox game. I have no idea how to describe it other than you try to save your idiot dorfs from themselves. It's not for everyone and it's frustrating to get into, hence the hate your life comment.

I believe the PC option is still better since the base game has been on sale for $9.99 (USD) at least five times since June. That's only counting Steam sales, not GMG, Amazon, bundles, etc.. So in the end, you get a game + expansion for ~$36 (USD), compared to spending upwards of $60 for both on consoles. Plus, by the time the holiday sale rolls around, the expansion may get a 25% off price w/ the base game for even less than $9.99.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

You are making arguments for the PC as a platform, it being an expansion is still not better than a stand alone expansion especially if all you want to play is the expansion.

That aside, if you want to make it a monetary issue you can play through it on a rental for a couple of bucks on a console.

Gone Home is $10 on the Humble Store for those who were waiting for a sale.

Iffy on the value at 10 bucks or not (which is what I got it at)...

When I played through and did pretty much everything it was 90ish minutes long.

It's a cool story/experience, just very short IMO. Glad I've played it, but I'd call it must buy at 5 bucks.

I'd say its a good deal at $10. Same price as a movie ticket for the same length as most movies.

Gone Home's story was garbage IMO. Presentation was good, but the story ended up very amateurish and trite.

I see your point....I enjoyed the telling of the story, but I caught on pretty quickly and there weren't really twists that much.

Still a cool game, but left me wanting more.

Decided to buy Risk of Rain, and I'm going to mess around with streaming if you want to see the possibly horrible attempt at playing the game and streaming it:
