Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

I found this piece regarding PSNow that I find ironic. "The power of the cloud"...LOL....Anyways, here's an interesting bit of information that a beta tester revealed that I wasn't aware of.

Some have praised its ability to deliver a relatively lag-free experience to users despite being streamed while others have discussed the merit behind charging absurd rental prices for certain games in the beta. However, in all of this PlayStation Now coverage, I’ve noticed one thing that people haven’t discussed: how save files are managed.

Following the introduction of PlayStation Plus in 2010, Sony launched a feature that would become a staple for the PlayStation Plus experience, but often one that people gloss over: cloud saves. With this small, yet all-too-important feature, users could upload their save files to Sony’s servers, log in from another PlayStation 3 and download their data, allowing them to pick up right where they left off. Later on down the line, the PlayStation Vita and now the PlayStation 4 would receive this feature, further advancing the service. With PlayStation Now, Sony has taken that feature a step further by removing the console on the user’s side of things and placing everything in the cloud. You see, when you’re playing a PlayStation Now game, you’re using one of Sony’s virtual PlayStation 3s. Even pressing the PlayStation button on the DualShock 4 or DualShock 3 allows you to bring up a slimmed-down version of the PS3′s XMB, featuring your save data, friends list, messages, and trophies.

The save data from your PlayStation Now session is all stored in the cloud. Additionally, you can download your own save data from the cloud since it’s all housed under your PSN id. This means if you were playing the PS3 copy of Final Fantasy XIII and logged 60 hours but ended up selling your PS3, you don’t have to start over. When you boot up the PlayStation Now version of the game, simply head on over to the XMB and navigate to the online storage as you normally would. From there, you can download your save data and begin using that despite playing the PlayStation Now copy of the game.

I was able to test this out with Guacamelee! just last night and it worked perfectly. I exited the game, downloaded my data, and jumped back in to the final fight with Calaca. It works seamlessly, and it works well. The PlayStation TV also works well with PlayStation Now.

That is really great, however it dosn't justify the ridiculous rental prices that were released earlier. It is safe to assume that when PSNow is released to the masses the servers will become overwhelmed and people with less then stellar internet connections will see some lag, and in some games such as MLB the show or FPS games that is critical to quality of game experience. This save feature actually sounds really cool and the all digital console that this is trying to lead to down the road does as well, but the simple fact is that we don't have the capabilities to do that yet nationwide, proof is in the pudding with all the other streaming services such as netflix and Amazon Prime, they see serious lag and/or quality drops in large areas due to net congestion and IP throttling. just my 2 cents.

Um, this is not true Qdiddy. I'm not sure you're aware, but Sony's PSNow service is Gaikai which they purchased in 2012. Prior, they had a history that I don't think overwhelming servers was a problem.

Here is a brief take away history from Wiki.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaikai

Gaikai operated two business models for its cloud gaming services before the acquisition: Ad Network and Open Platform.

In the Ad Network model, at the end of the demo the customer was given the option to purchase the game or product from a local retailer, online store or direct-to-drive download service. The Ad Network included the Gaikai Affiliate Network which launched on June 2, 2011 reaching over 10 million monthly active users by late 2011.

Websites which joined the network were able to stream high-end PC games as embedded advertising, and in exchange received a share of the marketing revenue generated from games streamed to consumers, who played the demos free of charge. Gaikai-enabled games had been integrated into YouTube, EA's Origin, and Ubisoft's UBIShop in late 2011. In April 2012, Gaikai launched its service embedded inside Facebook, allowing games to be streamed directly in the Facebook canvas.

Meanwhile, the Open Platform model allowed streaming full games to PCs, digital TVs, tablets and smart mobile devices. The first mobile partnership came in May 2012, streaming games to the Wikipad tablet. In June 2012, Samsung announced a cloud gaming service powered by Gaikai to stream AAA games to its high end LED Smart TVs.

Hey guys is this noise normal? I installed a new SSHD and have been reinstalling games. The disc installs have seemed to go a lot slower than before for some reason, but maybe I am misremembering. The disc drive seems to make a noise that I don't think I noticed before as it's reading the Show 14 disc during the install.

I'm paranoid when it comes to this stuff, my greatest fear about upgrading the hard drive was that somehow I was gonna mess something else up in the process, which is why I waited so long before finally convincing myself to do it. Let me know if this sound is normal or if I should,be concerned

I'm pretty sure mine made a similar noise when installing games.

Sony should work on a service where you can trade in digital games. Seems like a million-dollar idea to me. I regret going digital with UFC.

Not sure we'll be able to trade them in but MS may have diffusion loaning and gifting on Xbox One, could push Sony closer to what you're hoping for if they aren't already working in something.

Personally I think that will be a next gen feature.

Trading in digital would be amazing but how would it work? The supply and demand doesn't apply.

Why would Sony or any publisher give you a refund and then charge someone else less when they could just lower the price later and make two sales?

No physical copies means they aren't trying to burn through merchandise or empty racks. It's all in the "air" so to speak. I just don't see how this works.

What I think would make more sense is enabling people to rent their digital games out for a fee. Sort of like Amazon letting prime members lend out their books but instead you disable your ability to play the game by charging a fee to someone who wants to play it.

Maybe even have this work through Playstation Now like a marketplace. Sony could take back a percentage of the fee and maybe even cap the amount you could charge for a single digital copy.

The gamer could recoup some losses and another gamer gets the chance to try the game before actually purchasing it.

Totally random thought. I'm sure there will have to be more to it than that.

Valiant Hearts comes out this week.

Sniper Elite, Oddworld, and TLoU out next month. I might have to jump on Sniper Elite if I finish Watch Dogs before Oddworld comes out.
