True on both points but I think the money they will make far outweighs those issues, feeling alienated is different then if they just upgraded and the previous games were not playable after just 2-4 years that is understandable. I don't know the way forward in the long run and don't really like the incremental upgrades as it would get really expensive really fast, I tend to agree with previous post that stated this is a most likely one time deal to capture the newer tech and then back on cycle, although lines are starting to blur in certain aspects as well.

Either way as long as great games keep being made, that's all that matters lol

Don't focus on 4k, it comes down the bigger games, better framerates and better visuals. This will always be the case.

4k is only one bullet point.

How do we know this is a one time deal? How do we know it is not going to be the normal thing now? Or maybe we will start to get new mid gen type of things for now on at least. So like maybe ps5 comes out in 2019 and then we get like a ps5.5 in 2022 and then a ps6 in 2025 or something.

Yeah but I think you can want for more of a real new gen then a mid gen. I think a big reason for this NEO thing and Scorpio thing is because of 4k. If there was no 4k right now I think we would instead see no NEO and Scorpio and would instead just be getting ps5 and xbox2 or what ever in a few more years.

I think the big reason behind the NEO and Scorpio is because AMD went to both and said "We can do an in place upgrade, build a new chip with new technology that requires no software or other hardware changes" and both companies agreed to it. There's no way that both companies, both using AMD, both come up with this same new faster half-generation upgrade idea, both at roughly the same time.

I want a 4k tv but I am having a really hard time trying to move out on my own and trying to get a better job. In till I move out on my own I may not get a 4k tv because not only do I want a 4k tv but I want a like 50-60 inch tv compared to the 37inch tv I have right now and much more then 37 would be bad for your eyes with the size of my room. Also I think post NEO no matter if that is ps5 or just another upgrade of some sort I think will be when we start to get true 4k games and not just upscaled 4k or something. Also it sounds like Scorpio may be more of a real gen like jump then NEO. Sounds like xboxone to scorpio is 5 times jump in power where NEO from ps4 may only be like 2 times of a jump in power.
It's not a PC approach, it's a cell phone approach. If this were like PC, everyone would be building and spec'ing their own versions of a PS4, including aesthetics like casing.

This is no different than Apple or Samsung upgrading their phones on a yearly basis. The owners of the previous models can still access all of the apps, software, and OS upgrades. The purchasers of the newer phones can simply do a little more. The entire electronics industry has been headed this direction for years so it was only a matter of time before consoles followed suit.

No one is being alienated, the consumer is simply being offered more options on a yearly or bi-yearly basis should they so choose to spend their money on the upgraded offerings.

I've been living under a rock.

What the hell is Neo and why should I buy one if I just bought my PS4 a few years ago?

And if it's a new Sony console...then why are they making a slim PS4?

                Color me confused.

So basically the PS4 wasn't built to handle 4K so they're releasing Neo as a sort of console/adapter to help PS4 games run based on games with higher resolution and speed?

                    You gotta be kidding me.

It's the same thing Xbox is doing. PS4 games will work on both consoles so it's really not a big deal.

Blame the endless websites and YouTube morons who compare every pixel and frame rate. Got out of hand and MS/Sony reacted, since obviously this is what everyone wanted.

It's that but I think it's a lot of catch this marketing wave before it dies off. 4K is the "hot" thing right now, the new "HD" if you will from what a decade ago? Even though there is barely any 4K sources out there, and most content isn't true 4K but upscaled it's selling like hot cakes right now

Full disclosure I have a 4K UHD tv and it does look great but it's rarely OMG like HD first was as there just isn't enough native content yet to fully display it's greatness

I kind of think in this respect the way they are implementing it in consoles is good, as here it is if you want it, if not ok everything still works the same, instead of dropping a new $600 system with all the 4K bells and whistles that only applies the the smaller group of early adapters

Not everyone is happy with 30 fps games that could have benefited from a higher frame rate.

It's a much bigger deal than having additional native pixels

Not every game will still be 60 FPS with these new systems either.

Didn't say they would be. Just saying that not everyone is happy with 30 fps and those people are happy about an upgrade.

If people weren't interested in frames and resolution then those youtubers wouldn't have any views and wouldn't have the motivation to create new performance content. Can't really blame the messenger here.
