    Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

I went ahead and preordered the pro from Amazon. I figure I can cancel if I decide I don't want it. But wanted to have preordered since I'm sure the supply might scarce upon release.

Only negative for me is no 4K blu ray.

I don't have a 4K tv yet but planning getting one tax season. So I guess it makes sense.

Am I the only one who wants the Pro solely for better in FPS? Could care less for any other features. I decided I'm getting BF1 on PS4 instead of PC because the Pro will probably take it's lunch money.

The pro will take the PCs lunch money? Guessing you have an older rig?

This would be hardly shocking. There was nothing to be excited about at all with this Sony news. They're adding console skus that nobody really needs. If you're about to drop money on both a slim and a pro, you should just jump into PC gaming if you haven't already. Or just upgrade your rig if you have .You'll actually save yourself money if youre the type to keep falling for this new console every year BS Sony is about to pull.

There is about a negative 1 percent chance Sony releases another console next fall.. I mean come on...LOL

They will release 3 new models in 1 year? HAHAHAH

You wont see a PS5 for 3 more years at least.

Sony said this was for gamers only so they released a 4K non native console which will upscale 1080p and provide some 2k native games but no BR player? Fail

I guess to keep the cost down but if the Pro is aimed at the 4K tv owners how do you not give them a 4K UHD? I mean who thought this was a good move

I consider the Pro the answer to the XB1 Slim with better resolution and minus the UHD at 100 dollar hike

The Scorpio will have about 2 years in the market as the most powerful console. It will sell a ton first week and then not much until price drops.

MS is not catching up to Sony but they will have the better gaming console for a few years at least.

                  Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

The reason there's no UHD drive in the PS4 PRO is because Sony saved about $15 for not including it in the console. Granted, $15 multiplied by millions of consoles is a lot of money but at the same time, adding the UHD drive would get more people to buy the console because checking Best Buy, the cheapest UHD drive is $400. So, to have a UHD drive in the console that plays games with HDR and increased specs can only sell the system better.

The only difference between the Xbox One Slim and the PS4 PRO is the differences with the GPU. PS4 is 4.2TF and the Slim is 1.4TF. I'm expecting the triple amount of power to help the games run and play better. Is the FPS better? That's my number one concern. All the games on both consoles look great yet this is all they can talk about - resolution and colors. UGH. How about FPS? How about does it load faster? Does it run better? Does the game play better?

In the end, have to wait to see how it sells but I think this is an unforced error and a rush to push 4K despite there not being a 4K UHD drive and no native 4K games. 4K Netflix and Youtube??? Seriously? No one is buying PRO for either of those two things.

It's funny, it's almost like every three years, Sony and Microsoft have a deal in place to take turns screwing the hell up and pissing people off. It's amazing.

I think I'm sticking with my vanilla ps4 maybe trade it in for a slim just to update the looks and cut down fan noise, no UHD player kind of kills this for me though on the Pro. Not saying it's a worthless upgrade as it is an upgrade but not at that price point for what you get IMO.

Who at Sony thought doing a reveal conference same day as Apple iPhone was a good idea too, huh? Oh well The Show still plays and looks great on my current system with my 4K tv's built in HDR+ mode so I'm happy regardless

To me this is a huge disappointment that they didn't include a UHD player. That would've been huge. I honestly don't know how this can be called for the "Enthusiasts" without the UHD drive. I'm still going to get it, but this was huge let down for me.

Yea I hear you, only reason I'm not getting it is I jumped early on the XB1 s having just bought a good new 4K UHD HDR tv I was drooling for something to take advantage of that lol.

It's still a good upgrade don't get me wrong I would pick it up if not for the s like I said and HDR is coming to all PS4's anyway, but knowing me if I see a sale in the near future on one of the deal sites I troll I will probably jump, especially if it does in fact make the frame rate much better like many are saying/hoping

Same here man. I bought a new 65 inch 4k HDR tv and bought the xbox slim. I was expecting this to be my media box since Sony does a better job with audio codecs compared to microsoft, but this is very disappointing. Sony starts out by saying the Pro will have over 600 hours of 4k HDR content then says "Uhh and no UHD drive" That's really a head scratcher IMO. I'm selling my launch PS4 to a friend and just paying the difference for the Pro.

This was the big fail of the conference today, IMO. I really hope between now and Nov 10 they show off some real improvements in rendering/fidelity with games running on the Pro at 1080p. Otherwise I can see a lot of existing owners just passing on the upgrade

Digital Foundry: Three hours with PlayStation 4 Pro

Speaking to Naughty Dog at the event, we were told that The Last of Us Remastered - just like its base PS4 version - will have a 30Hz mode that features enhanced image quality. The existing PS4 game features higher resolution shadows maps and those are joined by a full, native 4K pixel count on the PS4 Pro. This drops down to a lower resolution at 60fps, where we're told to expect improved performance compared to the original release on base hardware.
However, a trio of the Sony first party efforts looked seriously impressive: Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone and Infamous First Light. All use the same cutting-edge upscaling technique. Previously we've talked about the 4x4 checkerboard process, where a 2x2 pixel block is extrapolated out into a 4x4 equivalent - next-gen upscaling, if you like. It allows developers to construct a 2160p 4K framebuffer from half the pixels - a much closer fit for the Pro's GPU prowess.

I first took a look at the results in Days Gone, the open world survival horror title from Sony Bend. I observed the pixel structure on a 65-inch Sony 4K display from just two feet away, and then I moved closer. It looked good, seriously good. There is a slight softness compared to the pin-sharp precision of a native 4K presentation, but even close-up, the effect works well - in a living room environment, it should work just fine. In common with the other titles using this technique, the demo code we saw can switch in real-time between 1080p and '4K' at the press of a button, with HDR on and off also selectable. There is a clear, unambiguous night and day difference between 1080p and the 4K mode, which is clearly resolving more than the basic 2x increase in pixel throughput being generated at the base level. In fact, the detail increase is almost revelatory - and that applies equally to both Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn.
Speaking to developers on site, several aspects of the checkerboard technology came into focus. Up until now, we've seen it as a software post-process upscale, but in actual fact, it's one of a number of new custom features backed into the PS4 Pro's GPU and as such comes with zero cost to game developers. We also understand that while it is a hardware feature, game-makers do seem to have a certain level of control - which may perhaps explain why different games exhibit varying levels of artefacting.
But the key takeaway is this - while the PlayStation 4 Pro GPU lacks the horsepower to render out challenging content at native 4K, the presentation we've seen on a number of titles clearly shows a worthwhile, highly desirable increase in fidelity over 1080p - one that does put a 4K screen to good use. Switching between full HD and checkerboard 4K, the increase in detail is simply stunning.
Other aspects of the PS4 Pro became evident during our various demos. First of all, while most developers seem intent on supporting enhanced resolutions and HDR, the fact is that users of 1080p screens will only benefit from super-sampling, and perhaps a smoother frame-rate on most titles. However, game-makers also have the opportunity to prepare different presentations depending on the screen attached. So if you have a 1080p display, you might see more lush visuals, whereas if you have a 4K display on tap, you may get a resolution boost. What's slightly concerning here is that it may well require adjusting resolution in the front end if, say, you'd prefer to take advantage of an enhanced 1080p mode rather than a less visually impressive 4K presentation. We rather hope developers will embrace Crystal Dynamics' approach with Rise of the Tomb Raider, where you can switch between the various modes on offer on the pause menu.

We can confirm that the reports are correct. Rise of the Tomb Raider has three different modes in the PS4 Pro version only: a 4K30 presentation with HDR support that strikes an impressive balance between visual features and resolution, a 1080p30 mode that ramps up quality settings to the max and an unlocked frame-rate mode for 1080p that sees performance vary between 40-60fps (we assume that this will be down to CPU bottlenecks), rather like Tomb Raider Definitive Edition on the standard PlayStation 4.

At the PlayStation Meeting, Crystal Dynamics were only showing the 4K mode. We've played a fair amount of this title recently, on both the Titan X Pascal and dual GTX 1080 SLI. It is, quite frankly, one of the finest 4K gaming experiences available. PS4 Pro is compromised a touch - it looks a little softer, and quality presets are pared back - but the core of the experience, the 'upgrade factor' over 1080p if you like, is there. This was by far and away the best third party 4K title we saw at the PlayStation Meeting.
