    Re: Retro Console/Game Collecting Thread

What are your plans for retro gaming/collecting in 2018?

For me, I'm trying to do my best to dedicate 1-2 days a week to playing retro titles (PS2-era and older) and looking for games I can finish in a couple of sittings.

In terms of collecting, I'd like to pick up an original Gameboy complete in box, a Gameboy color (maybe one with a backlight mod) and an OG Gameboy Advance with a backlight screen mod.

My biggest search right now is a red PS3. They are extremely rare to find. A GameStop near me had one, but it was in rough shape and had a 3rd party controller with it. No way was I buying that.

I play retro games about once a week. Would like to play more and now that my son is older (turns 3 in July) I'm going to get him involved in playing some of the games, especially games we can co-op so I can help him out.

In terms of collecting, I really want to increase my NES collection and need a new Sega Genesis as my old one suffered a fall/drop that didn't do it any favors.

My friend and I do about 3 retro video game road trips a year with the first one slated for next month. The Louisville Arcade Expo will be in town in March so I'm going to that. Besides arcade cabinets and pinball machines, they have retro console game systems as well as vendors. Prices are usually about 5-10% higher, but its kind of like a one shop stop and I don't have drive 2+ hours away to shop.

Anyone in or near the Louisville, KY area come March 2nd thru the 4th, I highly recommend you checking out the Expo
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Question for you guys...I've recently purchased some retro systems (NES, SNES, Genesis, N64) but they look horrible on my current TV (I use an AV jack and plug it to my tv). What would you recommend I use as a monitor/tv...something cheaper and smaller/current would work fine. Any insight would be much appreciated!

I'd head to Goodwill or some kind of Thrift store and try to find an old box TV. Retro games just don't look good on LCD/LED screens

I'll have to drop by my local goodwill and see what I can find. Fingers crossed!

              This is what I did.

Sad thing is that these style of TV's are becoming harder and harder to find.

I'd look at Goodwills, Craigslist and garage sales and see if you can find a decent CRT TV. I actually got mine for free from a neighbor a couple of years back who was moving and he didn't want to hold onto it.

There are some mods you can do to consoles to get them to look decent on an HDTV, but I still prefer to the CRT's, as that just puts me in more in the retro mood.

My preference too, I long for that retro feeling. Just can't get it with newer technology! Appreciate the advice.

Do new sets still come with AV inputs?

                      Yes

                      At least mine has them.

I still have this beast from when I was a kid. 27" RCA swivel TV from 1993. Works just fine. Love playing my old games on this. Thing is heavy as hell! It's in my daughter's room at the moment. Wife wants me to get rid of it but I won't.

I am thinking about going back and playing DK 1-3 on SNES I have them on my SNES classic now. I have always loved DK but really only owned 2 for a while and I was watching a few videos on youtube that a guy was doing about the franchise and after watching those it like really made me want to go back and play them again. I really hope we get a new DK game on switch soon I know DKCTF is coming out on switch but that was a wii u game. I want a new DK game.

I never understood this getting a old TV for old systems just sounds like a waste of money to me even if those TV's don't cost a lot. I have the Samsung ks8000 55 inch 4k TV for just over a year now and my gamecube, snes, wii, games look just fine and before that I had a 2007 Sony 720p TV and games looked just fine on that to. So I really don't get where this whole old games don't look right on HDTV thing comes from.

Might be you just had good luck, or maybe I've had bad luck. I've attempted retro gaming on a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD, a 42" Samsung 1080p LCD and a 65" LG 1080p LED (all 3 high end models). All 3 tv's had issues with playing retro games.

Re-configured the guest room to get my CRT TV, NES and Genesis hooked up. Played and finished Super Mario Bros. and was making my way through Sonic The Hedgehog before I had to make an appointment across town.

Tomorrow I'm going to bust out Streets of Rage.
