Re: New PlayStation 5 Details Revealed, Arrives Next Holiday Season

That's a encouraging quote from ND it sounds like 1st party titles are in for great times. Which is saying something coming off the great games this gen. Its a bit discouraging for 3rd party titles who will have to lower the power and speed with the 2 consoles being so different

They need to show off more videos of what exactly the SSD means to me. Because I've seen the xbox video and theirs loads up in like 5 seconds.

Touching back on the BC thing I really want to play Spiderman for the 2nd time. However I'll wait if its going to be improved for the ps5. If its just going to be the same game then BC does nothing for me since I plan on keeping my ps4.

      I agree.
Xbox went more with the high end PC brute force route. Which isn't bad at all. Sony went with more with an efficient path. Where Series might be able to have slightly better detail graphically, but PS5 might have better performance. And that's mainly with 3rd party games. Look at games like Uncharted 4 on the base PS4, so imagine a game like that on PS5.
Sony is go with the immersion experience. With the 3D audio and haptic feedback/adaptive trigggers, they want gamers to really be immersed in the game. I can see a scenario where you are in a dark cave and holding a candle and seeing light creep through the top of cave with Ray tracing adding the realistic lighting effects, then you feel a rumble in cave through the DS5, then your triggers has almost no resistance because your character is slipping down the cave. That would be cool

Exactly. Sony still has a major focus on the PS5 exclusives. So that's where we really going to see all these fully taken advantage of. Those exclusives will be even better quality and thats saying something, especially after year 2 of next gen. While 3rd party games will benefit from PS5 SSD, 3rd party still has to account for the lowest common denominator. So the weak points of each console has to be accounted for and console exclusive features will likely not be included. I don't see most 3rd party games to account for the Dual Shock 5 features or put a heavy focus on the 3d Audio on multi-platform games.
That's why not having Series X exclusive will hurt Xbox initially because it can't show off true power of console outside of visual fidelity. Since they are accounting for base Xbox One, that will have to be considered for in Xbox exclusive. Where even with SSD, they will still need a lot of loading screen for current gen Xbox One versions and those games might not perform as well as the Series X version. Whereas the PS5 exclusive don't really need loading screen instances since it is building with PS5 specs in mind. Those PS5 exclusives will be a focus. Just wish they show tech demos to show SSD

I agree. I want to replay some games like Spiderman, GoW, and Uncharted 4 again. But I want to play an advanced version, not the original version with faster loading

I totally understand and see the points. I'm also just imagining if specs were flipped how Sony people would slam Xbox for bring weaker again, etc. It somewhat amuses me how Sony missteps get brushed off. Schreier made great points on how marketing wise they've missed the mark vs Series X doing similar reveals.

I'm not referring to you either, just general PlayStation guy. I agree with you that it probably doesn't matter. I just remember the brutal resolution wars last time and hope it won't happen again

In reality I don't think it's that different, but it doesn't slam dunk Sony the win like last time (or Xbox vs PS3). Sony doesn't have it easy with Kinect errors now.

Most concerning to me is the BC language...top 100? Is that it?

Sony has massively dropped the ball so far I don't see how anyone can argue that. With all the crazy stuff going on in the world people are desperate for good news to escape. They took a fun and exciting product with consumers that are desperate for any news. The 2 main things anyone is talking about today is how boring the speech was and your product is 18% weaker.

I wonder if they will change some things like this gens xbox ended up doing ? If both machines are the same price its going to be real competition unless sony does a better job of selling the normal fan.

I think my favorite part about their news is also the scariest in the short term. Anyone who wants to expand the internal storage *today* is looking at $200 to add another (PCIE 4.0 NVME) 1TB.

This price isn't going to come down as demand balloons. Longer term, that will change thankfully.

Re: New PlayStation 5 Details Revealed, Arrives Next Holiday Season

Marketing wise, Sony definitely dropped the ball. It was hyped up as a "deep dive". Most was expecting something similar to Xbox's on Monday. So getting a developer/investor presentation was a let down. To the casual fan, they dropped a 18% weaker console. There is still confusion with BC. Some still saying the 100 games are the ones that are enhanced. But until it is confirmed by someone credible, it looks disappointing that Xbox will have full BC. Think if they can get price under $500 that would be a win for them.

I think the issue most are having is that with Xbox, we pretty much know everything we need to know. Unless there is unannounced console features, only thing is games and that'll be in June. But with Sony, all we know is tech specs. We don't have an idea of when we will get an actual consumer reveal. My guess is in April

What's crazy is that Phil and Xbox have pretty much done similar deep dives, but made them better? I dunno...just has seemed cool to get the info vs. this disappointment from Sony fans... There has to be a way to do it better for Sony.

Let's put it in these terms: if you were the president of a an automobile manufacturer and you had a new sports car to roll out and had to choose between Phil Spencer and Mark Cerny to conduct it, which way would you go? All the data and the X's and O's were in Mark's presentation, but it was like watching a public service announcement on oral hygiene

I'm no marketing wizard and I can come up with a better more effective strategy off the top of my head.

                          - Show a 10-15 minute video made for the everyday fan. During it you can talk about the high points of the ps5 and what it has to offer. Include some videos showing off the features not just a guy lecturing.

                          - Have someone with a personality do the talking and not a tech guy

                          - Have someone like Cory from God Of War explain what the SSD will mean. Have him say "In the last GOW we wanted to do x but it just wasn't possible with the hardware. Now with the improved SSD we will be able to do that and so much more "

                          - Have some quick interviews with developers saying how tflops don't matter because its not the size of the ship its the motion in the ocean.

                          - Show the video of the Spiderman loading up fast screen with the ps4 version beside it.

                          - Show a summarize graphic with the ps4, ps4 pro and ps5. Then explain how the ps5 is x times bigger, better and faster then those models.

                          - Announce that In about a month we will have a 53 minute long deep dive into the tech side of things. Are maybe you can just show this to a certain select outlets like digital foundry and let them do the reporting.

                          - End it with something about games like a tease of what's going to be a ps5 launch even if its just a picture of a character.

It'll really be interesting to see where stuff matters vs. not. SSD add on cost on both worries me, and with edges in different areas I wonder what will be utilized and what not? It'll be interesting for sure.

I'm expecting a "traditional" console form. I think when they eventually reveal the console, it'll be a big blowout. I would expect to see console, controller, tech demos, and maybe news about games. We just have no clue of when we will get a proper reveal.

With concerns over the technical requirements of the SSD hardware and lack of available aftermarket options, I'm surprised Sony isn't going to release and brand their own proprietary SSDs that fit all their criteria. I'm not saying those SSDs have to be exclusive or the only ones that work with a PS5, but it seems like it would provide a decent revenue stream for Sony to give that option to consumers.

Certainly, the more options the better, and it might help the less tech savvy populace to see "PS5" or Sony branded SSDs that are immediately and obviously compatible with the new system. Some aftermarket / third-party drives will still work, of course, this is merely a way for Sony to get head of the curve until PCIe 4.0 becomes more mainstream.

Overall, the system sounds intriguing, and going strictly to an SSD platform is smart. The price is a slight concern, but I'm less worried about raw power anymore. A 60 FPS baseline is more appealing.
