Certainly, the more options the better, and it might help the less tech savvy populace to see "PS5" or Sony branded SSDs that are immediately and obviously compatible with the new system. Some aftermarket / third-party drives will still work, of course, this is merely a way for Sony to get head of the curve until PCIe 4.0 becomes more mainstream.

Overall, the system sounds intriguing, and going strictly to an SSD platform is smart. The price is a slight concern, but I'm less worried about raw power anymore. A 60 FPS baseline is more appealing.
They did that for the Vita, so why not?

I'm not saying they should, but it's definitely a statement toward the fact that they would lol.

Those will be expensive. They will promote modular installs heavily. I think Series X will be capped at 1 TB expandable to start, but able to get price to around $100. Sony users will be to get whatever size expandable that is certified, they're not going to be cheap at all. I think the hope is that these companies are going to want to create those suitable PS5 expandable storage and try to have reasonable prices. Me personally, once I buy the PS5, only thing extra I'm trying to buy is games. I will take advantage of modular installs and will delete game data once I know I'm done with it and just keep Save data.
I'm not concerned about power difference. I'm not concerned about 1st party games because I know they will be capable to tap into the full power. But I just hope we see 4k60 on 3rd party games.

Based on the developers there isn't much power difference

The third party vs. first party discussions i've seen on Twitter are interesting. Basically all first party devs are loving the SSD speed, but third party ones think it's cool but realize they end up developing for PC (or Xbox) as well, so might not dive in for those advantages.

I doubt it'll be a big issue and they'll all be great, but something I was reading as this debate swirls.

I wish the companies could just release early due to the coronavirus lol....that'd get a lot of sales.

Very good read and interesting article on WCCFTECH -

We now have preliminary specifications of both the Microsoft Xbox Series X (XSX) and Sony Playstation 5 and it's time to do a quick analysis of their graphics capabilities. Before we begin, a primer: this article is based only on the information released by both companies and their execution and handling of said release. Nothing is presented as the gospel truth for you to believe, all facts and arguments are given clearly. Sony PS5 vs Xbox XSX specs comparison and graphics analysis The build-up to the Microsoft XSX and Sony PS5 specification reveal has been littered with a litany of […]

Are the two new consoles tech gap basically the same as PS4 vs XB1 ?

I think they're more neck and neck, we don't know until we see real use cases vs. just numbers.

                  Update on BC from sony

A quick update on backward compatibility – With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.

We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.

In his presentation, Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the Top 100 most-played PS4 titles, demonstrating how well our backward compatibility efforts are going. We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PS5 news, in the months ahead. Stay tuned!

The gap is bigger then ps4 pro vs x

People dont realize that Sony PS5 is a 9.3tf gpu with much lower compute units and reaches 10.7tf only at max clock speeds which will not occur often and not in AAA games. In most demanding games the XBOX SX will keep the locked status and power draw all the time while the PS5 will fall somewhere in the middle of that 9.3tf and 10.7

Combine with a faster CPU on the XBOX and RAM it wil be a gap that will show big time in multiplat games

The SSD advantage for Sony will be felt in their exclusives only in any important way over XB

Pretty much this. But just for the record, it's 9.2TF and 10.28TF overclocked. The main difference is that with the variable speeds of the CPU and GPU, both will never be maxed out for any game. Using one to the max compromises the other.

With that said, PS5 will be amazing but im seeing a $400 price tag and I would have preferred that Sony would have legitimately gone all out with a $500 console instead.

I'm expecting Sony's exclusives to be amazing as for the most part they usually are but im expecting all third party multi-platform titles to be better on Series X. But we'll see how it all turns out.

It will be interesting to see how much better the games are with that compared to the way they are on ps4 and pro. I don't have a pro and i am not sure what resolution games like those i listed run at on pro. I did watch a video about it on digital foundry a while back. With this news to it means even like multi-platform games from this gen should run on ps5. I would love if multi-platform games got a update to run better/look better at ps5 but i am not counting on that. I would love to be able to play like batman arkham knight in 4k on ps5 has its still one of the best looking games on ps4 but yeah has long has i can just play it is the main thing.

I wonder if we will get to see the console and controller and hear about a few more features in like April/may and then in June/July get game announcements or what. Or will Sony say like nothing before June/July and then just give us console, controller and features and games all at once.
