Can you run a PS5 game directly off an regular HD? I believe that's why they require the use of such a specific SSD with the heatsink and all that. But yeah those are def not cheap.

Think we need a new interface to allow for the write speeds the system is architected around. Goes for both systems.

The internal m.2 drives are more than 5-6x faster than an external SATA3.

So for this gen this is it. Fortunately Sony has gone the commodity route and these drives will inevitable get cheaper (while Microsoft has a simpler solution, a single manufacturer and a proprietary for factor and connector isn't ideal long term - but we'll see?). Just need to make sure you don't use a cheap drive with no heat sink. It's been said for some time the heating issues w/ the PS5 are why this has been delayed as long as it has. Hopefully that just results in poor performance for the drive rather than issues with other internals. Not sure there's much ventilation for the slot.

Unrelated, Horizon is expected to be delayed, no more PS5 exclusives for 2021 aside from ... GTA5?

I think they can only stay there for storage. They have to be on the PS5 internal to be played.

It's not that big of a deal to me because I usually only play a few games at a time and I can still run PS4 games from my 5 year old external but for some I could see why it's a big deal.

The Seagate 1TB expansion card for $220 is cheaper than what the 1TB SSD's will be for PS5. Also, im pretty sure that the Seagate expansion card exclusivity ends later this year so you'll see other expansion cards for Series X that could end up being under $200 or more capacity for a better price.

I'm very curious to see what happens when people start installing those SSD expansions inside the console because the console can overheat without it so I wonder how the SSD expansion will be cooled.

No surprise about Horizon 2. I have predicted February 2022 for like two years. And I will Say God of War Ragnarok in Spring 2023 because I don't see 2022 being a possibility whatsoever.

Sony had the better first half of 2022 and the better first eight months of the generation while the next eight months will be empty.

Microsoft will have the better second half of 2021 and the better next eight months while the previous eight months were empty.

Basically, pretty evenly balanced. Sony went front loaded while Microsoft is finally getting going with their exclusives.

The IGN article above list ones that are cheaper than the seagate one.

              So just to make sure.

With the expansion SSD, you can have more games installed and ready to play versus having an external drive that can just store the games?

Also, the expansion does not effect if someone uses an external hard drive for PS4 games, right?

Yeah, you're right. The PNY one is the cheapest followed by Western Digital. Of course, it still remains to be seen how these SSD expansions affect the cooling of the PS5 because if the extra SSD needs cooling for itself, that could jump up the overall cost.

                    Re: PlayStation 5

I will wait for next year to get a SSD. I still have space and with all the delays to games I don't think I am going to need more space this year. Now next year is crazy will need more space at some point next year for sure. Maybe by next year prices will be cheaper. I am not sure what size to get. I got a 2 TB hard drive for ps4 games and still have some space left. So around that much on ps5 may be fine. I guess on ps5 the like 612 GB you have you get to add to the SSD you buy. So if you buy a 1 tb SSD than you have like 1.612 TB. That may be enough this gen has games have not really gotten bigger like I thought it would because of the new compression tech. So getting a 1 TB SSD might be enough. Horizon forbidden west if its true that it has been delayed that is a big disappointment has I was like 98% sure it was still coming this year even if a lot of people didn't.

I remember some arguing a couple of months ago saying it this move hurt Sony because Microsoft put the game on gamepass. According to Sony it surpassed their expectations. I’m so glad they put it on Xbox.
