can't go wrong with LCD or Plasma.

    Read this: http://www.flattvpeople.com/tutorials/lcd-vs-plasma.asp

it really depends on how big of a tv you want. If you want something 42" or greater then Plasma is your choice. If you are looking at something under 40" then I would go with LCD.

If you have the room for it, would you consider CRT over LCD?

I would, as long as it is a widescreen TV.

Re: HDTV Questions and Answer Thread

Well after contacting Samsung for the final time, I talked to a Teer2 tech support person and finally I got my PIP to work. Everything was right there under my nose. If it was a snake it would have bit me LOL. Here it is... I purchased a standard OTA at Wal-Mart ($9.97) I hooked it up to the back of my TV in the "ANT2 Air In". All I had to do after this was to get my internal tuner to recognize my OTA local broadcast channels. For example, one of my local channels is 7 (ABC) well with the OTA, channel 7 is actually channel 39. See www.antennaweb.org. Once I did this, now my local channel (7) is broadcasted in HD and man it's a thing of beauty.

Now all I have to do is hit PIP on my remote control, and there is my split screen. Last night I was able to watch "Lost" on one side of the screen, and I was watching the GMC Bowl in HD (ESPN) on the other side. Both channels were in HD and just beautiful. Now once I got this working, I wanted to give my Xbox a spin to see how it would work with PIP. So I changed the source from component 1 to component 2 which is where I have my XBOX hooked up to. And now I was playing College Hoops on one side of the split screen, while watching LOST on the other side of the split screen. This is what i've been wanting to do since I purchased this TV. At first this was becoming very frustrating, I'm not technical like alot of you guys so all of my joy right now my not be a suprise to you. But I knew there just had to be a way for this thing to work and finally it is. Thanks again for all of your help.

I'm still having problems with some of my other local broadcast channels coming in. I'm getting the " No siganl or Weak signal" message for some of them. I guess this could come from not having a strong enough antenna?

Re: HDTV Questions and Answer Thread

Can anyone tell me about HDTV's with Cable Card inputs?

Specifically, I am choosing between 2 lcd flat-panels, one with CC input and one without. I want to call Time Warner Cable today to have them come and install Digital Cable. My question is, will the installation be different depending on which TV I get?

If TWC can come install digital cable to my current analog tv today, will I be all set for when I get my HDTV next week? Is it just a matter of unplugging the digital cable box from my analog tv and plugging it in to the HDTV? And does it matter whether I got a tv with CC input or not?

Thanks to anyone who can clear this up.

Does anyone have that television? Also, would anyone be skeptical about buying from ebay if it still carried the manufacturer's warranty?

Basically, I have around $1200 to spend after the new years on a television. I want a flat screen, and nothing smaller than 30". I know that narrow's it down greatly, but I really want something pretty good. Any suggestions other than save up more money, lol?

Ok, so I've done some basic research into HDTV, but still have some questions. Basically, I've decided to get an LCD HDTV, most likely 32", maybe 37". I've got 3 main questions, but I've found it hard to get a good answer. Realize I'm not that big of a videophile or anything......

                  1. When you get HD cable (or satellite, or whatever), are they broadcasting in 720p, 1080p, or 1080i?

                  2. If I buy an LCD with a native 1080p resolution that can scale to 720p, how much worse will that look? I'm asking specifically for xbox 360, because I know that is natively 720p

                  3. Can you really tell that big of a difference between 720p and 1080p on a screen of only 32 or 37"? Since I'll probably get a 32" does it really matter all that much? Can you even get a 32" with 1080p?

Re: HDTV Questions and Answer Thread

So I went to Circuit City yesterday to pick up the 37" Sharp Aquos.

(Model LC-37DB5U - http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sharp...oductDetail.do). I was psyched to get it because I've been researching HDTV's for about 2 months now and had decided on the 32" Sharp Aquos LC-32DA5U for $1599. But, with some holiday money that I received, I was able to step it up to the 37", which CC had on sale for $2199.

Turns out, both these models are Sharp's older models, and they've apparently discontinued making them. As a result, Circuit City is no longer carrying or ordering the 37DB5U for its customers. Now, it appears as if Best Buy still is able to order it, but they charge $2599.

I'm not sure what to do here. Is it a stupid thing to purchase a tv that's been discontinued by its manufacturer? Does that indicate that something is wrong with the tv?

I've pretty much fallen in love with the Aquos line and I really want to get one. But the new Aquos 37"

(the LC-37D4U - http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sharp...oductDetail.do) is $2799, which is certainly more than I intended on spending. Sharp also makes the LC-37D7U (http://reviews.cnet.com/Sharp_LC_37D...-31307299.html) - I can't seem to determine whether that is an older model or newer model, and it doesn't seem to be available at BB or CC.

Can anyone provide any advice or suggestions? I really would like to order my ultimate choice before Christmas so that I have it next week.

                      1. CBS, NBC, and TNT broadcast everything in 1080i (along with most of the pay cable HD channels like HBO). ABC, Fox, and ESPN broadcast in 720p. Nothing is 1080p, and most of the 1080p TV's available won't even be able to accept a 1080p input over HDMI. I believe that only JVC 1080p sets can accept 1080p so far. Believe me, it will be a LONG time before there is any significant amount of 1080p programming, with the exception of PS3 (if they continue to go that route).

                      2. It shouldn't look that bad, just set the outputs correctly. Make sure your cable box is set to 1080i (the TV will convert the signal to 1080p), same thing with the Xbox.

                      3. I think most 1080p sets are in the 50" plus range (rear projection LCD or DLP). As for being able to tell a difference, probably not, unless you are sitting very close to the set. From any "normal" viewing distance, the difference will be minimal to none.

As for the Aquous question, don't hesitate on an out of date TV. The manufacturer's continually cycle "new" models of their sets every year. The only differences are smaller chip sets, different cabinets, and possibly a new image processor. All warranties will still be active upon purchase, so if it doesn't work, have it replaced! If you were looking at a set that's three or four years old, there might be a problem. Unless you have money to upgrade annually, you will always have an old TV. Good luck!

Depends on the stations.. HBO is in 1080i.. ABC,Fox, are in 720p.. I'm sure you can google it.

                          2. If I buy an LCD with a native 1080p resolution that can scale to 720p, how much worse will that look? I'm asking specifically for xbox 360, because I know that is natively 720p..

It's best to set the 360 to 1080i. If the display is 1080p it will just deinterlace the signal to 1080i.. If you the set the 360 to display 720p your display would have to scale down to 720p, which bring picture flaws & artificats.

                          3. Can you really tell that big of a difference between 720p and 1080p on a screen of only 32 or 37"? Since I'll probably get a 32" does it really matter all that much? Can you even get a 32" with 1080p?
Largest LCD HDTV that supports 1080p is 37inches.. & I doubt you would see a big difference between 720p & 1080p on a smaller.. But as a monitor 1080p is the sweet spot & would recommend 1080p over 720p..

If you use the Cable card instead of a cable box, you lose two things. You will not be able to order any on demand programming because current cable card only accept a one way signal and I don't think you can hook up a dvr with it (I could be wrong here).

I have TW as well. Have them install the HD receiver now, even if you don't have an HDTV. I was told there is no extra cost and you can set the box to 480i (Non-HD) until you get your new TV. This is what I am currently doing.

                              Hope this helps.

I have TW as well. Have them install the HD receiver now, even if you don't have an HDTV. I was told there is no extra cost and you can set the box to 480i (Non-HD) until you get your new TV. This is what I am currently doing.

                                Hope this helps.
Thanks. I definitely won't need the CableCARD input, as I wouldn't want to lose the option of getting NBA League Pass and the like. Looks like I may end up with a tv that has CableCard anyway, but oh well.

As for the TWC hookup - I got the impression that they have two different types of Digital Cable boxes, one HD and one not HD. At least this was the impression that I was given by the rep. I'll have to look into it.
