    For any CRT owners...

how often do you have to adjust the convergence? Mine seems to need minor adjustments every other day. Is this common? Or can a technician set it permanently?

    Thanks.

Okay, Jedi TV masters, show me the way...............

Have you seen them both in action? If money isn't an issue, go with whichever one looks the best. I don't think you could go wrong either way. Just be sure to get you a set of bunny ears so you can get OTA channels.

      Welcome to the family.

I have the Sony model..Excellent for gaming & PC monitor.. HD broadcast are good too, especially CSI..3d like.. DVDs are just pretty good, but a lot depends on the source material of the DVD.. The 42inch Samsung is riddled with problems according to AVSforum..I seen the Sony & the Samsung 50inch DLP side by side with the same HD feed & the Sony looked sharper..

I had my mind made up to get the sony, but I watched the 50" at sears for a while and the screen door effect was pretty bad. I don't know about the 42", but I can't handle the SDE of the 50". Maybe it was the lights in the store, but it was pretty bad.

I have no problem with SDE with my 42inch Sony... I sit about 6-7 Ft away from the screen..

that's good to hear. I'm going to take a close look at the 42". I was between 2 ft and 12 ft from the 50" and could see it easily.

Does anybody have any impressions for that Hitachi DVD player from Wal-Mart with the HDMI?

That's part of the reason I stayed away from Sony LCD's and went with a Samsung DLP. SDE was horrible for me. I saw the Sony at my Uncle's house under normal viewing conditions and saw SDE and wasn't blown away by the picture.

IMO the difference between LCD and DLP is very minimal. It's up to the individual viewer. For me, DLP was the better picture. For others, it's LCD.

Not overly impressed with most DLPs on the market..

                      To each their own.

IMO they look a lot better than LCD's. Once I got my Samsung DLP home and looked at it compared to my Uncle's Sony LCD in a home environment, I knew that I made the right choice.

I used to have DirecTV but can't get it now that I've moved into a very heavily treed community.

I now have TimeWarner and it's OK (picture isn't as good but OH well). I have a nice high definition set up with HDMI cables.

How do I get the best picture? Should I stay with a high def box like I have now or would a cable card be the best way to go. My TV is cable card ready and I wouldn't need any accesories.

Or does it make any REAL difference in actual picture quality either way.

                        Thank you for your feedback.

I guess the ultimate question is do you have something else to plug into your HDMI jack? I am running my cable through the component input on my set, because I have an upconverting DVD player through HDMI. I'm keeping it through component because my cable box doubles as a digital video recorder, which I adore. Having a young son, my wife and I can't catch our shows...so the DVR comes in handy. When I move, I might use a cable card, but until then, I'm sticking with my setup.

The upconverting DVD is pretty nice. I was comparing LOTR on TNT HD the other night with my DVD and while the blown up HD feed was prettier (why can't they preserve the aspect ratio!), my DVD was much closer then it was before through my progressive scan. I only hope that I can find a reasonable HDMI splitter in order to eventually have both DVD and cable through the port. I can't see myself going back to regular progressive scan DVD (though if you own a Samsung upconverting player there is a hack to get upconversion through component). Hope this helps!

I have a 720p native Samsung HL-R5067W by the way.

Is it worth it to get a DVD like Avia or Digital Video Essentials to improve the picture on your TV?

I would definately pick up Digital Video Essentials. It's twenty dollars cheaper than AVIA and is the most recent calibration DVD available. You will definately get some use out of it, and some changes to boot. It is also chock full of information that you'll love to learn, yet have no idea how to use (stuff like the color of gray is 6500 Kelvin).

I would pick it up. If nothing else, you'll be able to see how much sharpness enhancement is default on your screen, along with a better look at your color situation (the disc comes with red/green/blue color filters to assist in altering your color and tint/saturation).

Too bad a lot of the sammy DLP's have gaming issues & lip sync problems.. I viewed a 50inch Sammy & a 50inch Sony LCD RP HDTV at my job.. Both were 'calibrated', & both recived the same HD feed.. The Sony's picture was noticablly sharper & displayed richer colors.. Either set had a advantage.. I guess it'sa all based on opinions..
