Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

Can someone please help. I'm trying to stick with spending under $600 for an HDTV. I have a 50" HDTV that I game on with my 360 and xbox and also a 23" Samsung LCD.

What do you think of this TV? I was mainly going to watch DVD's and play the PS2 or xbox on occasion on here. It's going into my office so it won't get as much use.

Only thing that sucks is that it's a 4:3 aspect ratio, but for the price at $568.00 for 27" HDTV Samsung it has an amazing picture.

*Built-In HDTV Tuner: Add HD-capable antenna to receive over-the-air high-definition broadcasts, where available. Optional set-top box required for high-definition cable or satellite programming.
    *Inputs: 2 HDMI, 2 component video, 1 S-video, 2 A/V (1 side, 1 rear) and 2 RF (rear)

Looks good to me, and Samsung makes some very good low cost CRT's. The inputs are all there, but I would spring for the lowest cost 16:9 widescreen TV (though with PS2 a 4:3 set might be preferred). It's up to you.

As an aside...aren't simulated screen images fantastic? What a joke!

They make a tv look way too good in these pics.

I didn't buy the Samsung since it wasn't 16:9, so I actually found an open box at Best Buy of a Toshiba TheaterWide 30" Widescreen Flat-Tube HDTV which retails for $799 and I bought it for $569.

Johnny, what do you think about this Sammy?

            Samsung

I have been leaning towards the Sharp 56" DLP but this Sammy is almost a grand cheaper. Plus it has the HDMI AND a DVI input. I don't seem much of a difference except it's 6 inches smaller.

I've read mostly good things about it.

I had that model for three months before the HDMI input fried (likely the fault of the calibrator I had used). I really enjoyed it though I did notice some gaming lag on PS2 (playing timing games like DDR was impossible). I didn't have any lag on 360, and only slight lag on MVP for regular Xbox.

The picture was very good, and it had better blacks than my current 50" SXRD. If Samsung didn't take so long to get my set fixed (the digital board, where the HDMI input is housed was unavailable with a "TBA" estimated arrival) I would have kept the DLP. My wife and I ultimately forced Best Buy into giving us a refund since I sat for two months without an HDMI input.

The only negative was that there was only ONE HDMI. It all depends on how you connect stuff though, if this will become a problem.

I can answer other questions if necessary.

So being that I will be playing a 360 through it it sounds like that wouldn't be an issue.

I think at my price level I'm gonna end up with one HDMI input anyway. I can always get a 'splitter' down the line.

My main questions is on picture quality. Now if it's built crappy, that's bad too obviously.

Yes, this is the same model. I am loving this tv for a number of reasons. This is my gaming tv and the 360 look like a frigging beast(meaning good) on this tv. I also watch tons of sports and basketball games look cool and the baseball games look better but I am waiting for football season. Not all HDTV channels are equal and some look clearly better than others. The other reason why I love this tv is because of the split screen function. My time is limited and its cool to catch a baseball game and play my 360.

I have my HDTV cable box hooked up to my HDMI. The tv have a good amount of outputs and so far I am very pleased. I also play my XBOX NFL2k5(component cables) and I haven't seen any lag. If there is a better gaming tv for the price I dont know but I am very happy in my first month of ownership.

Ok new question for Johnny or anyone else.

This Sammy is a few hundred more, BUT it has TWO HDMI inputs. AND the color wheel is 4000 more RPM (I'm guessing that's good LOL)

                          Thoughts?

Sony A10 or A20 series 720p LCD rear projection. Costco has them with a stand for under two grand. I say the Sony LCD because they have fewer lag issues with PS2 (480i sources) and don't have the risk of burn-in, however small, that plasma's have.

                              Jistic,

It wasn't that the TV was bad or made crappy, just that they didn't have the board I needed. I guess it was from "hot swapping" the HDMI input (plugging and unplugging while once source is powered on). I know that the HDMI cable doesn't carry any power, but I've read that this could be a problem. Just make sure everything is turned off when hooking up gear. My calibrator had his signal generator and I guess had it on when I was plugging the input in. The funny thing was that the HDMI input didn't fail until later that night when I was gearing up to watch a DVD on my calibrated set. Oh well.

As for that second TV you listed, you'll definately want that second HDMI, for PS3 or next gen DVD/upconverting DVD. The HL-S series are the brand new versions of the Sammy DLP's, and the faster color wheel "might" reduce the rainbow effect (have you checked for this?).

*You also can't go wrong with a free stand, assuming you like the look. That alone saves you two to three hundred which can then go to the warranty, which you'll likely want for service and lamps.*
