Is Saturdays inevitable thrashing of the U.S. by Italy on ESPN HD? I set it to record on my DVR but didn't even notice.

The U.S. game will be on ABC HD (I think they have back-to-back games on Saturday).

ESPN HD finally gets into the game tomorrow. They're going to broadcast one game Thursday and Friday and I think when the group play is over all the games will be there or on ABC (no more ESPN2).

They claim 720p is better for sports and 1080i is better for movies, but who knows? There are way too many variables involved.
On DTV the 1080i NBA games on TNT are seriously INSANE. I mean creepy real. The 720p games look decent, but even the audio is only Pro Logic. I think it's WEAK.

Yet I caught some of the Arena Bowl on NBC on Saturday and they were broadcasting 1080i and Dolby Digital! That's a good sign for Sunday Night Football this year!

Anyone have an opinion about upgrading my basic component cables (came with my digital hd box) for hdmi?

I have a Sharp 37" LC37D40U. The picture is fantastic, but I'm just curious as to what different cables would do. Some say that cables are a rip off and not worth it. The component ones certainly look more than fine at the moment.

          Any thoughts?

It should make the HD programming better, at the expense of SD. I prefer HDMI, and would suggest trying it out. Just go to Wal-Mart and pick up a cheap HDMI or look online. It's a rip-off only when you drop a Franklin for Monster or something similar at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. HDMI cables can be had for cheap...and the difference (if any) shouldn't be pronounced at all. Good luck!

Hey thanks for the advice. Will look for something affordable.

By the way, just want to recommend my LCD (Sharp LC37D40U) to anyone looking for a great gaming set. No lag at all and amazing picture.

Here's the deal I'm thinking of pouncing on tomorrow

It's a 50" Samsung HL-S5088, notice I said S5088 and not S5087. The 5088 has picture in picture, an onscreen tv guide and Cablecard, none of which the S5087 has. For $2699, no tax, free delivery (and they have it in stock too) I would also get the Sony upconverter DVD.

Thoughts? Anyone ever dealt with Vanns before? They seem to have pretty positive feedback from what i've read.

My rule of thumb is..Don't buy extra cheap or extra expensive..Midrange price is the best, especially with video cables..I know Monsters Audio/video cables are THX certified, which means they exceed performance expection, but does the 'better' picture justify the outrageous cost? Only you can decide..I buy Monster cause I get them 60-65% off retail at work..& like the THX seal of exellence..

                      Thanks
A built in tuner just allows you to reciever over the air broadcast in HD. If you want HD cable you need to get the box..But HD is limited on cable, & the HD content's resolution is cut in half to conserve bandwidth..Many ppl call it HD lite..

Have you noticed the spot getting any better? If it's getting any better you may just want to tolerate it, of course not to the point you let the problem go and your set goes out of warranty. But if it's minor and it is something that was magnetic around it, eventually it'll probably go away on it's own.
It's very tough to tell since it shows up inconsistently based on the colors on the screen, and I'm not sure if my eyes are just drawn to it less since I've accepted it a little bit. If I had to guess, I'd say it's slightly better...I don't think I'm noticing it as much against the usual problematic colors. Before you said that though, I was actually leaning towards riding it out a bit longer.

If it doesn't improve in a month or so, I'm going to ask about it in Sony's online tech support and see what I can do about it. If it could actually work itself out naturally, and considering how minor an issue it is....that'd really be worth the wait.
